Notes: We investigated the magnetization of the ultrafine cadmium ferrite particles formed during the coprecipitation method and discussed the origin of enhanced magnetization based on the magnetic properties. A transmission electron microscopy micrograph shows aggregation of fine particles having two kinds of shapes, fibrous and granular. X-ray diffraction patterns of the specimens prepared by the coprecipitation method are composed of peaks corresponding to CdFe2O4, Cd(OH)2, and α-FeO(OH). The pattern indicates that the peaks of CdFe2O4 are fairly broad, suggesting the formation of a very small crystallite, with an average size of ∼8 nm. The ultrafine CdFe2O4 particles exhibit ferromagnetic behavior and have a net magnetization of 89±5 emu/g at 6 K. These results suggest that there must be many ferromagnetic clusters consisting of Fe3+ ions at the B sites around Fe3+ ions at the A site by the A–B interactions. Thus, such a change in the distribution of Fe3+ ions in the ultrafine CdFe2O4 particles results in increasing magnetization with decreasing particle size. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The behavior of finite-pressure-induced magnetic islands is numerically analyzed for three-dimensional magnetohydrostatic equilibria of the Helias configuration by using a three- dimensional equilibrium code. It is found that an island chain is generated on the 5/6 rational surface, when such a surface appears in the plasma region of the finite-β equilibrium. The island chain, however, is not so dangerous as to destroy the plasma confinement even if it appears in a vanishingly small shear region. Thus, a high β equilibrium with clear magnetic surfaces can be realized. Moreover, it is definitely confirmed that the finite pressure effect sometimes exhibits an unexpectedly good aspect, namely, that the vacuum islands are removed as β increases, which can be called ‘self-healing' of islands. This property can be explained by the numerically discovered fact that the phases of islands induced by the finite-pressure effect are always locked in the same phase regardless of β.

Notes: Various types of planar inductors have been proposed for reducing the volume of switching converters. Planar inductors using amorphous alloy ribbons as magnetic layers are also studied. The purpose of this study is to clarify the relation between the electrical performance of the inductor, and the properties and composition of amorphous ribbon. The experimental results show that superimposed dc current, I80, increases linearly with the product of Bm and ribbon thickness t, where I80 is defined as the dc current corresponding to an inductance which decreases to 80% of an initial value. In the case of stacking amorphous alloy ribbons, I80 increases with gradual approach to saturation, as the stack thickness increases regardless of ribbon thickness. However, the saturation value of I80 depends on ribbon thickness. The saturation value increases with increasing ribbon thickness. The above results suggest that from a practical viewpoint the use of thick ribbons is preferable. With respect to alloy composition, the Fe-based alloy is more favorable compared with the Co-based alloy because of its higher stored magnetic energy.

Notes: The amplification characteristics of a Cherenkov laser loaded with a Kerr-like medium are investigated on the basis of the fluid model for an electron beam. The numerical simulation with the aid of the finite element method shows that the amplification characteristics are greatly improved by the proper choice of the nonlinear parameter for a Kerr-like medium. The enhanced characteristics are due to the improved velocity matching between the electron beam and the electromagnetic wave, and to the self-focusing effect of a Kerr-like medium.

Notes: Scanning tunneling microscopy has been applied to observe hydrogen-terminated Si(111) surfaces at room temperature. A clear image was easily observed for a Si surface prepared by rinsing in pure water with very low dissolved oxygen after removal of native oxide by 1% HF solution dipping. A smooth surface in an atomic scale was exhibited in a 50×50 nm area. Completely triangular-shaped holes were observed on the surface. The holes were surrounded by steps which were very likely directed toward 〈112¯〉. The treatment of the surface was remarkably stable even after a 3 h air exposure. Furthermore, nm size pits were found at the bottom part of the triangular-shaped holes. The results imply that the nm size pits appeared to be due to microdefects and that the pits might be the origin of surface etching at the Si surface.

Notes: Background and objective To investigate the role of arachidonic acid (AA) metabolites in airway hypersensitivity.Method We studied the change in airway responsiveness to acetylcholine (ACh) after inhalation of some AA metabolites in guinea-pigs.Results Exposure to prostaglandin (PG) D2, thromboxane (TX) A2 mimetic U-46619, leukotriene (LT) D4 or LTE4 at concentrations which did not influence bronchial tone and blood pressure dose-dependently caused airway hyperresponsiveness. However, the change was not observed after challenge with a high concentration of PGF2α Furthermore, PGD2 and U-46619 induced an acute and short-lived increase in responsiveness, while LTD4 and LTE4 induced a slow-onset and longer-lived increase. In the tachyphyiaxis study, although the tachyphylaxis for airway hyperresponsiveness provoked by PGD2 and U-46619 was not observed, airway hyperresponsiveness induced by the second LTD4 tended to decrease, and the second LTE4-induced airway hyperresponsiveness obviously diminished. In the study using antagonists and inhibitors, TX-receptor antagonist BM-13177 inhibited PGD2- and U-46619-, but not LTD4- and LTE4-induced airway hyperresponsiveness. TX synthase inhibitor OKY-046 had no effect on PGD2-, U-46619- and LTD4-induced airway hyperresponsiveness, while LTE4-induced airway hyperresponsiveness tended to be inhibited by these inhibitors. However, the LT-receptor antagonist ONO-1078 inhibited both LTD4- and LTE4-, but not PGD2- or U-46619-induced airway hyperresponsiveness. 5-lipoxygenase inhibitor AA-861 tended to prevent LTE4-induced airway hyperresponsiveness, but had no effect on PGD2-, U-46619- and LTD4-induced enhanced responses. Conclusion These findings indicate that the local existence of PGD2, TXA2, LTD4 and LTE4 in the guinea-pig airway may act as an airway hyperresponsiveness- inducing factor rather than as a bronchoconstrictor. In addition, PGD2/U-46619 may stimulate the TX receptor to induce an acute and short-lived airway hyperresponsiveness, and LTD4 and LTE4, which may involve secondary mediator release, may act at the LT receptor to induce a slow-onset and longer-lived airway hyperresponsiveness, which may be associated with the induction, the development and the long duration of airway hyperreactivity.
