Notes: Efforts were made to obtain anisotropic thin-film magnets at low substrate temperature. This is an important criterion for practical applications such as to build motors. The influence of substrate materials as well as film thickness on the c-axis orientation were studied. It has been shown that thin-film magnets with the easy axis of magnetization normal to the film plane could be deposited at a substrate temperature of around 450 °C by choosing the composition near the line from Nd13Fe76B11 to Nd13Fe70B17 in the ternary phase diagram. It was found that the anisotropic film magnets could be also deposited on the metallic substrate. The c-axis orientation tended to be isotropic with an increase in film thickness. The obtained results were used to fabricate a milli-size motor by depositing 20-μm-thick Nd–Fe–B films on a silicon steel disk substrate of 5-mm diam. The milli-size motor exhibited a torque of 0.8 g mm at a rotational speed of 3000 rpm.

Notes: GaAlAs gain-guided semiconductor lasers having a curved facet are fabricated by employing reactive ion beam etching. The use of the curved facet permits stabilization of transverse mode in the direction parallel to the junction plane, reduction of astigmatism, and multilongitudinal mode oscillation.

Notes: We previously isolated two distinct Saccharomyces cerevisiae myo-inositol transporter genes, ITR1 and ITR2 (Nikawa et al., 1991). Here, we studied the regulation of their expression by measuring steady-state mRNA levels and β-galactosidase activities of lacZ fusion genes under different conditions. The results show that the expression of the two ITR genes is differently regulated: ITR1 was repressed by inositol and choline whereas ITR2 was constitutive. Deletion analysis of the ITR1 upstream region and comparison with the upstream regions of other genes involved in phospholipid synthesis indicate that the octamer sequence 5′-TTCACATG-3′ is important for the expression and inositol/choline regulation of the ITR1 gene.

Notes: Three cases of Warthin's tumors were studied with a scanning electron microscope. The free surface of the epithelium was composed mainly of round or ovoid dome-like structures bearing microvilli and apocrine protrusions. Ciliated epithelial cells were detected in 2 of the tumors. The tumor epithelium encircled various amounts of cellular debris resembling degenerate lymphoid cells. A few tiny cystic spaces were also found. Within the lymphoid stroma, tightly packed lymphocytes, a meshwork of reticulum cells and medullary cord-like structures were observed. Our findings support the concept that Warthin's tumors develop from heterotopic salivary gland ducts within pre-existing lymph nodes.

Notes: The occlusal tooth contact patterns in patients with temporomandibular dysfunction and normal subjects were studied under a range of conditions using a newly devised radiotelemetry system. The patterns in the patient group were completely different from those in the control group. During rest or work, the patients showed higher values for total number and time of tooth contacts, as well as several contacts of extended duration. Moreover, many of the tooth contacts during swallowing were plural contacts in the patient group. These results suggest that patients with temporomandibular dysfunction exhibit increased tonus of jaw-closing muscles, which is probably due to occlusal disharmonies and psychological stress.

Notes: A new portable system for measuring nocturnal tooth contacts has been devised. This system was suitable for patients to take home and record tooth contacts by themselves. A micro photo sensor using optical fibres was applied to detect tooth contacts. The sensor and the target were accurately fixed to opposed molars, respectively on the same side, with removable metal attachments. Patients were instructed to set the attachment to their tooth each experimental night. In the present study, data was assembled for four or five nights in three subjects who were free of masticatory pain and dysfunction. Each subject showed an individual tooth contact pattern. It is suggested that this new system is useful and convenient for measuring nocturnal tooth contacts.

Notes: Summary Biochemical pathogenesis of the aortic connective tissue diseases (such as, Marfan's syndrome, dissecting aneurysm or aortic aneurysm) was examined by estimating glycoprotein, collagen and elastin contents in the aorta and the intramolecular cross-linking component (isodesmosine) and the intermolecular cross-linking components (cystine, histidinoalanine) in comparison with the control samples obtained from subjects with aortic regurgitation. The elastin content in the aorta and isodesmosine content obtained from the extract of the aortic sample found to be decreased. Ratio of cysteine residues (Cys/Cys-Cys) in the elastin fraction in disease increased. Content of histidinoalanine was found to be decreased. It may be suggested that elastin is maintained in its native nature and shape by intra- and inter-molecular cross-linking bridges, and they are readily denatured by various disease conditions. After elastin was solubilized by elastase, immunoreactive elastin content in those aortic diseases was found to be increased in the human connective tissue. Serum elastase and elastase-like activities tend to increase more than those in the control. These findings may suggest that the change in the structure of elastin would make more susceptible to elastase and other proteolytic enzymes. The reasonable hypothesis may be that molecular defect of fibillin or other constitutional structural glycoproteins produce deficient and functionally incompetent elastin associated microfibrils, and the defect of microfibrils cause to insufficient intra- and inter-molecular cross-links in elastin.
