Notes: 1. The interactions between five α-adrenoceptor blocking agents and clonidine have been studied in rats, rabbits and dogs after intracisternal injections.2. Dibozane, ethomoxane, azapetine, dibenamine and thymoxamine reduced blood pressure in rats and an antagonism of the hypotensive effects of clonidine was detected for the first four drugs.3. In rabbits, azapetine, dibenamine, dibozane and ethomoxane were hypotensive while thymoxamine had no effect on blood pressure. Dibozane and dibenamine reduced the hypotensive effect of clonidine.4. In dogs, azapetine, dibozane and ethomoxane reduced blood pressure, while dibenamine induced an increase in blood pressure and thymoxamine was without effect. Only dibenamine antagonized the blood pressure lowering effect of clonidine. A definite conclusion could not be drawn with azapetine due to its long duration of action in both rabbits and dogs.5. These results suggest that the central receptors involved in the hypotensive effect of clonidine differ from many other central receptors and vary according to the animal species. In addition the a-adrenoceptor blocking agents appear not to have a unique site and mechanism of action on central cardiovascular control.

Notes: Bush beans, kale and soybeans were used as models for studying the effects of processing by canning and freezing upon 51Cr and 65Zn content. Plants were grown hydroponically, intrinsically labeled with 51Cr and 65Zn, and processed either by canning or freezing. Freezing resulted in 65Zn losses of 10.7% for kale, 8.6% for bush beans, and 6.7% for soybeans. A loss of 3.8% of 51Cr resulted during freezing of bush beans. Canning resulted in 65Zn losses of 23% for kale, 19.7% for bush beans, and 28.8% for soybeans. Canned bush beans and kale contained 40.7% and 62.7% respectively, less 51Cr than unprocessed samples. Freezing resulted in a greater mineral retention than canning. Less opportunity for leaching is available in freezing and reduction in radionuclide content of the vegetables by canning was accounted for by transfer to the drained liquid.

Notes: Summary The purpose of the present study was to characterize the effects of mianserin at α2-adrenoceptors. Firstly, the action of mianserin on postganglionic sympathetic fibres has been studied using the tachycardia induced by stimulation of the cardiac nerve in dogs. Mianserin increased this tachycardia, but could not prevent the inhibitory effect of clonidine in this model. However, an antagonistic effect of mianserin against clonidine was observed when animals were pretreated with desipramine. Secondly, mianserin antagonized the inhibitory effect of clonidine on the electrically stimulated guinea-pig ileum. In high concentrations, mianserin reduced both electrically and acetylcholine induced contractions. Thirdly, mianserin antagonised the sleep induced by clonidine in chickens. These results are consistent with α2-adrenoceptor blocking properties of mianserin in peripheral noradrenergic fibres in dogs, in cholinergic fibres in guinea-pig ileum and in the central nervous system in chickens.

Notes: Summary The purpose of the present study was to further characterize the α-adrenoceptors located on parasympathetic fibres. Segments of guinea-pig ileum were stimulated by transmural electrical pulses, and the ensuing contractions, which are due to the release of acetylcholine from postganglionic parasympathetic fibres, were monitored. Clonidine and tramazoline, which are thought to act preferentially on presynaptic α-adrenoceptors, reduced the contractions, whereas phenylephrine and methoxamine, postsynaptic α-adrenoceptor agonists, were ineffective. Contractions induced by acetylcholine were not changed by clonidine but were abolished by atropine. Yohimbine, piperoxan, phentolamine and thymoxamine reversed or prevented the inhibitory effect of clonidine. Prazosin and AR-C239 did not antagonize this effect. The inhibitory effect of tramazoline was antagonized by piperoxan but not by AR-C239 or by prazosin. Naloxone did not alter the action of clonidine, and piperoxan did not change the inhibitory effect of morphine. In conclusion, these experiments suggest the presence on cholinergic postganglionic fibres of both opiate receptors and α-adrenoceptors. The latter appear to resemble more closely α1-adrenoceptors than α1-adrenoceptors.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Vaccination is one of the most powerful strategies in medical prevention. Although wide-scale vaccination programs have failed in the German population, real opponents to vaccination in our country are in the minority. An adequate vaccination protocol is important not only medically, but also cost-effective from a public health perspective. The lack of a vaccination programs as in other European countries represents a major, critical deficiency which should be rectified in Germany.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The deflection of a plane turbulent jet in a crossflow is described by a model which takes the effects of entrainment as well as those of crossflow pressure into account. Using this model the centerline and the spread of the jet and the mean velocity averaged over its cross-section can be calculated. Asymptotic analytic solutions are given for the case where the velocity of the unperturbed crossflow is much smaller than that of the unperturbed jet. A comparison of the present calculations with experimental results of other authors shows good agreement.

Notes: Summary The generalized form of von Winiwarter-Buerger's disease (WBD) occasionally involves the brain. However, pure cerebral forms of the disease were also described by Spatz and Lindenberg (“Spatz-Lindenberg's disease”, SLD). Both, the type I, which involves the large basal arteries, and the type II, which results in a sickle-shaped granular atrophy of the cerebral cortex, are often accompanied by (“vascular”) dementia, which Lindenberg and Spatz mainly attributed to the bilateral involvement of the second frontal gyrus by granular atrophy. Recently, synaptic deprivation of the cortical gray matter has been shown to occur in the dementia of Alzheimer type (DAT) and other neurodegenerative disorders. In DAT, the synaptic loss highly correlated with the degree of the mental impairment. We wanted to examine whether similar changes also occurred in dementia of vascular origin, for which SLD, although infrequent, is a typical example. In fact, we found that in three cases of typical SLD type II the synaptophysin immunoreactivity of the cortical neuropil in areas without overt infarcts or scar formation was as much reduced as in Alzheimer's disease. Although it must be taken into account that in the present cases the synapse loss might, at least in part, be due to secondary (Wallerian) degeneration as a result of the neuronal loss in the “watershed” regions of the arterial blood supply, it cannot be excluded that a decline of cortical synaptic contacts in areas without necroses or scars may occur as a primary event, contributing to the pathogenesis of the dementia. Final conclusions can only be expected from investigations into further cases of cerebro-vascular disorders with and without dementia.

Notes: Abstract Two cases out of a sample of 41 fetuses and infants with prosencephalic malformation, observed at the Institute of Pathology and Department of Neuropathology of the University of Heidelberg, are described here in detail. These cases presented grossly with microcephaly and missing forebrain, appearing to be cases of aprosencephaly. However, in one of these cases glio-mesenchymal membranes with an ependymal outline, consistent with the microscopic appearance of the dorsal sac membrane in holoprosencephaly and obviously representing remnants of a collapsed primitive prosencephalic vesicle, could be demonstrated. In the other case only hindbrain structures, with the exception of the cerebellum, were present without any demonstrable remnants of a prosencephalon. We propose that the microscopic specification of a primitive prosencephalic vesicle in the first case and similar cases does not justify the diagnosis of atelencephaly/aprosencephaly because the prosencephalon was not really missing (pseudo-aprosencephaly). The prosencephalic anlage had been formed but remained vesicular without further differentiation of a holospheric brain mantle as in common holoprosencephaly (‘vesicular forebrain’). We believe that pseudo-aprosencephaly represents the most primitive form of holoprosencephaly, in which the forebrain remains as a complete sac, linking classical holoprosencephaly with ‘true’ aprosencephaly, i.e., defective prosencephalic anlage due to developmental arrest. The ‘vesicular forebrain’ allows one to extend the classification of Probst by an additional category which might be termed complete sac category, intercalated between the dorsal sac category and ‘true’ atelencephaly/aprosencephaly.

Notes: Summary Report of a 33-year-old man with a yearlong historory of low-back pain radiating into the left leg. Neurologic examination upon admission tto the hospital revealed a spinal compression syndrome at the lovel L5. Laminectomy at L4/5 revealed an encapsulated intradural tumor measuring 4×2.5×2.5 cm. The tumor was attached to the dorsal root L4 and extended downward to the conus region. Light and electron microscopy revealed features mostly consistent with a mixed chemodectoma and ganglioneuroma.
