    Notes: Recently it has been recognized that the neutral gas in inductively coupled plasma reactors heats up significantly during processing. The resulting gas density variations across the reactor affect reaction rates, radical densities, plasma characteristics, and uniformity within the reactor. A self-consistent model that couples the plasma generation and transport to the gas flow and heating has been developed and used to study CF4 discharges. A Langmuir probe has been used to measure radial profiles of electron density and temperature. The model predictions agree well with the experimental results. As a result of these comparisons along with the poorer performance of the model without the gas–plasma coupling, the importance of gas heating in plasma processing has been verified. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An unusual giant combined dermatofibroma is reported in a 34-year-old man who presented with skin-coloured swellings on the medial aspect of the left scapula. The plaque was well defined, reddish-brown and 25–30 cm in diameter. It was also tender and indurated. Several similar smaller lesions (satellites) were present around the plaque. Light microscopy of an incisional biopsy from the main lesion showed architectural features of a deep penetrating type of dermatofibroma, with xanthomatous aggregates, myxoid changes and probable myofibroblastic differentiation. Our case represents an extraordinary example of giant combined dermatofibroma with satellitosis. Despite its benign nature, a wide excision is contemplated because of its unsightly appearance and physical discomfort.

    Notes: Silicon nanowires will find applications in nanoscale electronics and optoelectronics both as active and passive components. Here, we demonstrate a low-temperature vapor–liquid–solid synthesis method that uses liquid-metal solvents with low solubility for silicon and other elemental semiconductor materials. This method eliminates the usual requirement of quantum-sized droplets in order to obtain quantum-scale one-dimensional structures. Specifically, we synthesized silicon nanowires with uniform diameters distributed around 6 nm using gallium as the molten solvent, at temperatures less than 400 °C in hydrogen plasma. The potential exists for bulk synthesis of silicon nanowires at temperatures significantly lower than 400 °C. Gallium forms a eutectic with silicon near room temperature and offers a wide temperature range for bulk synthesis of nanowires. These properties are important for creating monodispersed one-dimensional structures capable of yielding sharp hetero- or homointerfaces. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The influence of non-ionic (X-77) and organosilicone (L-77) adjuvants and of methylated seed oil (MSO) on the uptake, translocation and efficacy of glyphosate was investigated in Bidens frondosa L. and Panicum maximum Jacq. In addition, the physicochemical properties of adjuvants and adjuvant + glyphosate aqueous solutions were determined. Significantly lower surface tension and contact angle values were obtained with aqueous solutions of L-77 alone and with glyphosate. Over a 48-h time course, it was observed that 〉50% of applied 14C-glyphosate was absorbed within 15 min in B. frondosa with L-77. At 6 h and thereafter, 14C glyphosate absorption was significantly higher with MSO compared with X-77 in B. frondosa. In P. maximum, uptake and translocation of 14C-glyphosate + adjuvant were increased in general up to 48 h after treatment application, except with L-77, which showed no improvement in uptake – instead there was a significant reduction compared with no treatment with L-77. This indicated its antagonistic effect on this grass species. The lower values of 14C-glyphosate in P. maximum also confirmed that adjuvant effects were species specific. In the efficacy studies, glyphosate formulated with L-77 achieved significantly higher control of B. frondosa, while there was no control of P. maximum with this treatment. This confirmed antagonism in glyphosate absorption into P. maximum by L-77. Furthermore, significantly higher control of tested plants was recorded with MSO in comparison to X-77, which confirms the solubilizing or humectant nature of MSO.

    Notes: Microbial structural and expression profiles of the rhizospheres of three legumes, faba beans, peas and white lupin, were compared by RNA-arbitrarily primed PCR technique. Two different primers, M13 reverse and 10-mer primers, were used in the amplification and products resolved on non-denaturing polyacrylamide gel. With both DNA and RNA profiles Lupinus and Pisum rhizospheres were more similar to each other than to Vicia rhizosphere. The RAP-PCR products were also dot blotted and probed for bacterial peptidase transcripts. Plant-dependent rhizosphere effect was evident by the marked absence of transcripts for bacterial neutral metallopeptidase in Lupinus rhizosphere. The results of dot blot were further confirmed by RT-PCR for the expression of bacterial neutral metallopeptidase in the three rhizospheres.

    Notes: Abstract We have examined the effect of SO2 poisoning on a series of catalysts having Pd supported on ceria, alumina, and ceria–zirconia. For pre-exposure of 20 ppm SO2 at 673 K, we observed no changes in the light-off curves for CO oxidation on Pd/alumina. This pre-exposure of SO2 to Pd/ceria resulted in a significant upward shift in the light-off curve, so that the poisoned Pd/ceria catalyst exhibited similar rates to that of Pd/alumina. Similar upward shifts were observed for the water–gas-shift reaction upon exposure of Pd/ceria or Pd/ceria–zirconia samples to SO2. However, pulse-reactor data with alternating CO and O2 pulses showed that SO2 poisoning actually increased the amount of oxygen that could be transferred to and from the catalyst over the entire temperature range that was examined. The implication of these results for understanding the effect of SO2 poisoning and the measurement of OSC are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract  Although there is voluminous literature describing various aspects of hydatid disease in children, little attention has been paid to the small group of patients whose symptoms result in atypical presentation. This article addresses this problem, describing the features in ten children aged from 2 to 12 years. The sites of involvement were within a choledochal cyst (1). the pelvic cavity (1), the spleen (1), and transverse mesocolon. Albendazole was efficacious in the treatment of one recurrent case, as well as in preventing recurrence.

    Notes: Abstract A hydrocarbon degrader isolated from a chronically oil-polluted marine site was identified as Rhodococcus sp. on the basis of morphology, fatty acid methyl ester pattern, cell wall analysis, biochemical tests and G + C content of DNA. It degraded upto 50% of the aliphatic fraction of Assam crude oil, in seawater supplemented with 35 mM nitrogen as urea and 0.1 mM phosphorus as dipotassium hydrogen orthophosphate, after 72 h at 30 ° and 150 revolutions per minute. The relative percentage of intracellular fatty acid was higher in hydrocarbon-grown cells compared to fructose-grown cells. The fatty acids C16 , C1616 :1 C18 and C18 : 1 were constitutively present regardless of the growth substrate. In addition to these constitutive acids, other intracellular fatty acids varied in correlation to the hydrocarbon chain length supplied as a substrate. When grown on odd carbon number alkanes, the isolate released only monocarboxylic acids into the growth medium. On even carbon number alkanes only dicarboxylic acids were produced.
