Notizen: Abstract. Recent developments in 3D reconstructions can enhance the quality and diagnostic value of axial 2D image data sets with direct benefits for clinical practice. To show the possible advantages of a hybrid rendering method [color-coded 3D shaded-surface display (SSD)- and volume rendering method] with the possibility of virtual endoscopy we have specifically highlighted the use in relation to the middle and inner ear structures. We examined 12 patients with both normal findings and postoperative changes, using image data sets from high-resolution spiral computed tomography (HRSCT). The middle and inner ear was segmented using an interactive threshold interval density volume-growing method and visualized with a color-coded SSD rendering method. The temporal bone was visualized using a transparent volume rendering method. The 3D- and virtual reconstructions were compared with the axial 2D source images. The evaluated middle and inner ear structures could be seen in their complete form and correct topographical relationship, and the 3D- and virtual reconstructions indicated an improved representation and spatial orientation of these structures. A hybrid and virtual endoscopic method could add information and improve the value of imaging in the diagnosis and management of patients with middle or inner ear diseases making the understanding and interpretation of axial 2D CT image data sets easier. The introduction of an improved rendering algorithm aids radiological diagnostics, medical education, surgical planning, surgical training, and postoperative assessment.

Notizen: Abstract Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) combined with an entrained droplet technique [1] has been successfully used on a series of melt spun alloys with deliberate impurity additions to study the nucleation related aspects of secondary phase selection during solidification of dilute Al alloys. This paper illustrates how DSC is a sensitive tool for determining the effect impurities can have on the nucleation of secondary phases, and hence material properties of these alloys. Stepped cooling/isothermal holding profile DSC has also been used in preliminary investigations of the thermodynamic range of formation of the Al—Fe eutectic phases and their nucleation and growth solidification kinetics.

Notizen: Abstract This paper develops a robust and distributed decision-making procedure for mathematically modeling and computationally supporting simultaneous decision-making by members of an engineering team. The procedure (1) treats variations in the design posed by other members of the design team asconceptual noise; (2) incorporates such noise factors into conceptually robust decision-making; (3) provides preference information to other team members on the variables they control; and (4) determines whether to execute the conceptually robust decision or to wait for further design certainty. While Changet al. (1994) extended Taguchi's approach to such simultaneous decision-making, this paper uses a continuous formulation and discusses the foundations of the procedure in greater detail. The method is demonstrated by a simple distributed design process for a DC motor, and the results are compared with those obtained for the same problem using sequential decision strategies in Krishnanet al. (1991).

Notizen: Abstract Using tritium as a radiolabel marker of interspecific fluid transfer, we present experimental evidence that the heteromorphic deutonymph of an astigmatid mite (Hemisarcoptes cooremani) acquires materials (at least water) directly from the haemolymph of its beetle host (Chilocorus cacti). This acquisition is above that obtained from atmospheric vapour. The material acquired from the host is necessary for the completion of the ontogeny of H. cooremani and is likely procured through the action of the caudal ventral suckers of the heteromorphic deutonymph (hypopus). On gross morphological criteria, this mite-beetle relationship was previously defined as phoretic (for dispersal). Scanning electron photomicrographs of the physical relationship between the hypopodes and the heetles shed light on the ‘parasitic’ nature of the hypopus of H. cooremani. Our findings are discussed in terms of the evolution of parasitism from a free-living astigmatid form. This transition into parasitism is facilitated by the heteromorphic hypopus and represents a classic ‘wolf-insheep's-clothing’ strategy. The heteromorph retains the characteristic phoretic morphology while exploiting the host in transit.
