Notes: The influence of the crystallographic phase transformation on the work function was studied on a Co(0001) surface by a precise measurement of the contact potential difference. The characteristic hysteresis of the work function due to the hcp(arrow-right-and-left)fcc allotropic transformation was found. The work function changes abruptly by about 2 meV with the phase transformation while decreasing monotonically with temperature except in the transformation range. The contributions of the surface dipole barrier and the chemical potential of electrons to the work function are discussed from the point of view of cellular approximation.

Notes: The alloying behavior of copper atoms into gold clusters at temperatures lower than 300 K was examined using a 200 kV transmission electron microscope equipped with a double source evaporator in the specimen chamber. Isolated gold clusters of about 4 nm in mean diameter were prepared on a supporting film and were cooled down to 245, 215, 165, or 125 K. Copper atoms were then deposited onto the same film. Upon the deposition of copper, the gold clusters quickly changed into completely or partially alloyed clusters, depending upon the substrate temperature. The copper diffusivity estimated from such spontaneous alloying was many orders of magnitude faster than that in bulk gold. A possible mechanism behind the spontaneous alloying is discussed.

Notes: Third-order harmonic generation has been measured on highly oriented polydiacetylene (PDA) films prepared by the vacuum deposition method. Experimental values of the third-order electric susceptibility χ(3) measured for pumping laser polarized parallel to the polymer chain show a sharp three-photon resonance to the 1Bu exciton in PDA. Potential usefulness of these highly oriented PDA evaporated films in nonlinear optical applications is suggested.

Notes: Alloying behavior of gold atoms into copper clusters has been studied using a 200 kV transmission electron microscope (TEM) equipped with a double source evaporator in the specimen chamber. Isolated copper clusters of approximately 4 nm in diameter were first prepared on a supporting film of amorphous carbon, and then gold atoms were deposited onto the same film kept at room temperature. Upon the deposition of gold, the copper clusters quickly changed into homogeneously mixed Cu-Au alloy clusters. The gold diffusivities in the clusters estimated from the experimental results are at least 19 orders of magnitude faster than those in the bulk copper.

Notes: The relation between non-specific bronchial responsiveness and allergic sensitivity was evaluated in children with asthma. Bronchial responsiveness was determined by methacholine inhalation challenge test, and was expressed as a provocative concentration of methacholine causing a 20% fall in FEV1 (PC20). RAST titre for Dermatophagoides farinae and serum IgE level were evaluated as parameters of allergic sensitivity. When the PC20 vaiues, RAST titres for D. farinae. and serum IgE levels of 47 asthmatic children and 16 normal controls were compared. the asthmatic children had significantly lower PC20 values and higher D. farinae-RAST titres and serum IgE levels than the normal controls. The correlation analyses in 47 asthmatic children have shown that there is no significant correlation between PC20 values and RAST titres for D. farinae (r= 0.04. P 〉 0.1) or between PC20 values and serum IgE levels (r= 〈 0.03 P 〉 0.1). These results suggest thaty although both bronchial hyperresponsiveness and allergic sensitizalion may be in some way related to one another in children with asthma, the magnitude of allergie sensilization does not influence the degree of the non-specific bronchial responsiveness.

Notes: The thermal structure of the Sambagawa belt, which is reflected by minerals produced during the highest temperature of metamorphism, generally is characterized by the occurrence of the highest grade schists in the middle of the structural pile. The origin of this structure has been analysed in the upper horizon of the Sambagawa schist sequence in Central Shikoku as an example for the structure of the whole belt. The upper horizon of the Sambagawa schist sequence in Central Shikoku consists of three nappes, the Saruta nappe II, the Saruta nappe I and the Fuyunose nappe in descending order of structural level. The Saruta nappe II shows a downward increase of metamorphic grade from the garnet zone, through the albite-biotite zone, to the oligoclase-biotite zone. The Saruta nappe I consists mainly of rocks in the albite-biotite zone and partly in the oligoclase-biotite zone, but the direction of the increase of metamorphic grade is not clear. The Fuyunose nappe shows an upward increase in metamorphic grade which changes from the glaucophane zone to the barroisite zone. It is concluded that the Saruta nappe II and Saruta nappe I were overturned and then mechanically coupled with the Fuyunose nappe. The Sambagawa metamorphic field, which is of the highest temperature phase of metamorphism, appears to have had an inverted thermal gradient and a thermal structure comparable with that expected in the deeper parts of a subduction complex.

Notes: Collagen gene expression was studied in dermal fibroblasts derived from the inflammatory and sclerotic skin lesions of patients with localized or generalized morphoea. The levels of mRNA for type I collagen in early-passage fibroblasts derived from inflammatory lesions were higher than those obtained from the uninvolved skin, whereas those fibroblasts obtained from sclerotic lesions were unaltered. No alteration in type I collagen mRNA levels was observed in late-passage fibroblasts derived from the inflammatory lesions. The relative rate of collagen to total protein synthesis in earlypassage fibroblasts derived from inflammatory lesions was higher than that of fibroblasts from uninvolved skin, while no alteration or a slight decrease was observed in fibroblasts from the sclerotic lesions. The data suggest that the inflammatory reactions induce increased collagen synthesis by fibroblasts in the skin in scleroderma.

Notes: Summary We have developed a quantitative method for measuring hair growth using optical microscopy and image analysis, and have used this to investigate the rate of growth in subjects with and without alopecia. The hairs were cut from an area 7–8 mm in diameter and 24 h and 72 h later, images of the areas were obtained using an optical microscope and were recorded on a video disc. Measurements of the regrowing hairs, placed parallel to the scalp using a glass slide attached to the front of the microscope, were made using the image analyser. In subjects with little or no baldness there was a clear difference between fast-growing hairs and resting or slow-growing hairs. However, in subjects with alopecia there was no such difference and the growth rate of all the hairs showed a continuous distribution. Using this method other parameters such as the number of hairs per unit area and hair diameter as well as grouping of the hairs could be measured.
