Notes: The ability of the SAV 6 high-frequency jet ventilator to effectively ventilate three anesthetized, paralyzed cats (3.2–4.2 kg), two small dogs (7.2 and 10.0 kg), six medium-sized dogs (20.5–25.0 kg), and three large dogs (36.0–43.0 kg) via a 14-gauge (dogs) or a 16-gauge (cats) catheter placed percutaneously into the trachea via the cricothyroid membrane or into a preplaced endotracheal tube was evaluated. The lowest driving pressure within the range of 0.25 to 2.0 kg/cm2 (1 kg/cm2= 14.2 psi) and the highest cycle rate within the range of 60 to 240 per minute that would generate a PaCO2 of 30 ± 3 mm Hg were determined. All animals could be ventilated to a PaC02 of 30 ± 3 mm Hg by the endotracheal tube and transtracheal route, except the largest dogs, which couid be ventilated to an average PaC02 of 36 mm Hg by the transtracheal route. The transtracheal route consistently required higher driving pressures and lower cycle rates than did the endotracheal tube route. Cats could be ventilated with a driving pressure of 0.25 kg/cm2; small dogs could be ventilated with 0.5 to 1.0 kg/cm2; medium-sized dogs with 1.0 to 1.5 kg/cm2; and large dogs with 1.5 to 2.0 kg/cm2.The SAV 6 high-frequency jet ventilator can effectively ventilate cats and dogs (7.2–43.0 kg) via a transtracheal catheter and an endotracheal tube.

Notes: Eleven awake dogs and two cats received high-frequency jet ventilation (HFJV) via a transtracheal catheter for 6 hours to evaluate their clinical tolerance to the technique. A bronchoscopic examination was performed in all animals prior to and the morning of the day after the procedure to determine the gross effects of the technique on the tracheal epithelium. All animals tolerated the technique well, exhibiting no discomfort and only a minimal amount of coughing. Only one dog exhibited coughing on the day following the procedure. No bronchoscopic changes were noted after HFJV in one dog. In one dog and one cat, the only observed change was an increase in the prominence of the vascularity compared to that observed prior to HFJV. The remaining animals exhibited more severe tracheal changes that included: an accumulation of mucus (seven dogs, one cat), focal spots of hemorrhage (two dogs), linear stretches of epithelial denuding (two dogs), and diffuse reddening and epithelial denuding (four dogs).High-frequency jet ventilation by a transtracheal intravenous catheter is well tolerated for short-term ventilatory support in dogs and cats, but the magnitude of the tracheal damage observed in the present report may preclude long-term ventilatory support by this tecnique.

Notes: The mucosal relief of the omasum in cattle, sheep and goats was examined by the naked eye, stereoscopic microscope and scanning electron microscope. The mucosal relief of the omasum showed wide variations both between and within these species. Omasal papillae on the laminae varied highly in shape, i. e. conical, rounded, claw-like, wart-like, finger-like etc. They decreased gradually in size from the oral to the aboral region of the omasal lamina. Ridge-like structures and linear arrangements of the papillae were also seen on the omasal laminae of cattle and sheep. Many grooves and folds were found on the lateral surface of the omasal papillae in adult cattle and on the inter-papillar surface of the laminae of all three species. The mucosal relief of the omasum in cattle seemed to be more well-developed than those of sheep and goats. Dietary effects on the omasal mucosa were also discussed.

Notes: Abstract To identify Ito cells in normal and pathological adult human livers, immunohistochemical studies were performed by the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex method using monoclonal antibodies for α-smooth muscle actin (ASMA), desmin, and vimentin. Fifty one needle biopsies, 7 surgically resected specimens, and 5 autopsy specimens were studied. In the normal adult liver vascular smooth muscle cells and pericytes, together with perisinusoidal cells with thin cytoplasmic processes were positive for ASMA. These latter cells formed a loose and discontinuous layer along the sinusoidal walls. Immunoelectron microscopy showed that the ASMA-positive perisinusoidal cells were Ito cells containing fat droplets. The other sinusoidal lining cells were negative for ASMA. In chronic liver disease, ASMA-positive Ito cells showed an increase in number, size, and the intensity of immunostaining in areas of piecemeal necrosis), and formed a continuous cellular network. These cells were dendritic in shape with irregularly elongated cytoplasmic processes and contained an increased amount of microfilaments, in association with loss of the characteristic fat droplets. Thus, their ultrastructural features corresponded to those of myofibroblastic cells. Ito cells showed no staining for desmin in both normal and pathological livers. These results indicate that immunohistochemistry using an anti-ASMA antibody is a sensitive and reliable method for the identification of both normal and transformed Ito cells in adult human livers.

Notes: Abstract We investigated the liver biopsies of 78 patients with hepatitis virus-related chronic liver diseases (B type; 14 patients, C type; 64 patients) by immunoelectron microscopy with the Leu-7 monoclonal antibody in order to determine the association of NK/K cells in virus-related chronic liver diseases. Most Leu-7 positive cells in the liver had the Pit cell morphology but a few Pit cells were Leu-7 negative. A few Leu-7 positive cells had neither Pit cell nor typical T cell morphology. No ultrastructural difference was observed in Leu-7 positive cells between hepatitis B virus- and hepatitis C virus-related chronic liver diseases. Regardless of virus type and hepatitis activity, the fine morphology of extravascular Leu-7 positive cells differed considerably from intravascular cells. Leu-7 positive cells were regularly seen in the cellular infiltrates but the ratio of Leu-7 positive cells/whole infiltrates was low. There was no correlation between the inflammatory activity of the disease and the level of Leu-7 positive cell infiltration. A virus aetiology (hepatitis-C or hepatitis-B) did not affect Leu-7 positive cell infiltration. We conclude that NK cells play only a small role in the pathogenesis of hepatitis B virus or hepatitis C virus-related hepatocytolysis, during the chronic stage.

Notes: Summary A 45-year-old woman developed a myelopathy 9 years after a spontaneous left caroticocavernous fistula (CCF) was treated by a trapping procedure, with clipping distal to the fistula and ligation of the common carotid artery. Spinal MRI and vertebral angiography revealed recurrence of the CCF and gigantic tortuous veins draining through the brain stem down to the midcervical spinal cord. The abnormal veins and myelopathy disappeared after surgical closure of the CCF.

Notes: Abstract Hepatic energy metabolism was assessed by measuring the blood ketone body ratio (KBR), that is, the ratio of acetoacetate to β-hydroxybutyrate in the arterial blood, in 31 brain-dead patients in an intensive care unit (ICU) in Japan and in 25 donors just before procurement of the liver for transplantation in Germany. In the study in Japan, 7 of the 12 brain-dead patients treated with highdose catecholamine showed significantly decreased KBRs, revealing the detrimental effect of catecholamine on livermmetabolism. In contrast, 8 of the 9 untreated patients with blood pressure below 80 mm Hg showed almost normal KBRs. In the 25 donors in Germany, KBR was maintained within the normal range. Based upon conventional criteria, 21 livers were selected for use and the other 4 were discarded. Nineteen of the grafts were able to normalize KBR within 24 h after reperfusion, while 2 failed to function and required a second transplantation. It was suggested that a KBR in the normal range in donors is a prerequisite to immediate recovery of metabolic function of the liver graft after transplantation, and that hypotensive donors as a potential source of liver grafts may warrant further study.
