Notes: Most of the solutions proposed by various workers to solve a nonequilibrium equation for the flow towards a nonpenetrating cavity well are based on the curve-matching technique or an approximate straight-line method. In this paper, another technique to solve an inverse problem has been proposed. This approach is simpler and more realistic since the element of human judgement is practically eliminated.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Sekretion von retinolbindendem Protein (RBP) ins Blut von Ziegen wurde nach unterschiedlicher Verabreichung von Vitamin A (Retinylacetat), Β-Carotin und einer Mischung von pflanzlichen Carotinoiden untersucht.
Notes: Summary Studies were conducted on the secretion of retinol-binding protein (RBP) in blood of goats given different treatments of preformed vitamin A, Β-carotene and plant carotenoids. Administration of these sources either in a single massive dose or massive dose split into four equal doses, markedly increased the secretion of RBP in blood. The secretion of RBP in blood occurred at least in two phases, one at early periods and the other at later periods.

Notes: Summary The bacteria present on samples of desiccated flax stems were Bacillus mycoides, B. subtilis, Erwinia carotovora, Pseudomonas fluorescens, P. putida and Micrococcus sp. and the fungi present were Cladosporium herbarum, Fusarium culmorum, Botrytis cineria, Epicoccum nigrum and yeast. When inoculated on autoclaved stems or in liquid culture, B. subtilis produced mainly pectin-lyase and xylanase. However, only pectin-lyase was detected in significant levels in autoclaved stem sections or in liquid cultures inoculated with E. carotovora. Enhanced pectin-lyase and xylanase levels were detected in field-retted stems sprayed with B. subtilis compared with enzyme levels in stems sprayed with E. carotovora or the control stem tissues. Increases in the fungal population coincided with a reduction in the bacterial population on treated stems at the later part of retting. Enhanced retting was observed in stems sprayed with B. subtilis and consequently the stems produced finer fibres than fibres from E. carotovora-sprayed or control stems.

Notes: Summary The in vivo distribution in man of the four platinum derivatives cis-dichlorodiammine platinum(II) (DDP), cis-trans-dichlorodihydroxy-bis-(isopropylamine) platinum (IV) (CHIP), cis-dichloro-bis-cyclopropylamine platinum (II) (CP), and cis-diammine 1,1-cyclobutanedicarboxylate platinum(II) (CBDCA) has been observed. The availability of these compounds labelled with the radioactive isotope of platinum, platinum-191, has made serial in vivo imaging of their distribution possible. Injection of 17–35 MBq (5–28 mg) of the labelled compound IV was followed by imaging, using a gamma camera, with particular reference to the kidneys, liver, and tumour site. Hepatic and renal clearances were observed in all nine patients, but no unequivocal evidence of tumour uptake was found. The left kidney uptake was estimated at times up to 7 days after injection. Mathematical analysis of some of the uptake curves failed to show any significant difference between the clearance times observed. However, the two patients who received CBDCA did show a higher initial renal uptake, falling within the 1st day to levels comparable with those of the other compounds, and the three patients who received DDP showed consistently liver uptake.

Notes: Summary The potential of utilizing a radio-labelled derivative of the antiviral drug (E)-5-(2-iodovinyl)-2′-deoxyuridine (IVDU) for the specific, non-invasive, in vivo diagnosis of Herpes simplex virus encephalitis (HSVE) was investigated in a rat model of the disease. Following pharmacological disruption of the blood brain barrier radiolabelled IVDU was administered by intra-carotid injection. Brain radioactivity was compared between control and infected animals via gamma camera scintigraphy. After clearance of non-metabolized drug, markedly higher levels of activity were found in infected brain. Post-mortem studies of cryostat sections of brain examined by autoradiography and immunochemical staining showed the radioactivity selectively accumulated in areas of virus infection. These results indicate that radio-labelled derivatives of antiviral drugs may allow the specific neuro-radiological diagnosis of HSVE.

Notes: Summary Selective uptake of the cerebral blood-flow imaging agent99mTc-hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime (HM-PAO) by Human Herpesvirus 1 (HSV-1) infected cells was investigated in vivo and in vitro. No specific uptake of HM-PAO was observed either in encephalitic rats (by brain scintigraphic imaging or by immunoperoxidase staining/autoradiography of brain sections) or in HSV-1 infected Vero cells.

Notes: Summary The influence of the quality and the quantity of dietary proteins on the distribution of a single massive dose of vitamin A in various organs of growing Wistar strain rats has been studied by using casein and bengal gram diets at 20 % and 10 % protein levels. The distribution of [3H]-retinyl acetate in various tissues was also investigated in these dietary conditions. The results show that the hepatic storage of dietary as well as a single massive dose (20,000 I.U.) of vitamin A was profoundly decreased in the rats fed on bengal gram diets as compared to those fed on casein diets. Regardless of hepatic stores, the plasma vitamin A levels were comparable in all the groups. Feeding of low quality of protein reduced the tissue distribution of [3H]-retinyl acetate in control as well as rats given a massive dose of vitamin A. This study suggests that both the poor quality and the inadequate quantity of dietary protein are detrimental influences on the vitamin A status of the growing rats.

Notes: Summary The effect of maternal vitamin A restriction on the biochemical development of the lung in rats has been studied. The vitamin A status of dams has been varied by supplying low, medium and adequate amounts of vitamin A (6, 40 and 100 μg retinol/day/kg body weight, respectively) during pregnancy and suckling. The results demonstrate that the restricted supply of vitamin A to the mother affected the growth and development of the lung in parameters of tissue weight, DNA and protein levels and their biosynthesis from respective labelled precursors, RNA contents, cell number and cell size.

Notes: Summary Twenty bladder biopsies from ten patients with superficial transitional cell carcinoma were obtained prior to and following therapy with intravesical mitomycin-C. Each biopsy was evaluated histologically and immunohistochemically for A, B, H blood group antigen (BGA) expression. A, B and H blood group antigens were identified using monoclonal anti-A, B and H antibody and were localized with the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex (ABC) technique. Particular attention was directed toward flat urothelial lesions and the urothelium adjacent to papillary tumors. Routine histologic evaluation showed improvement in posttherapy biopsies compared to corresponding pre-therapy biopsies in 7/10 cases but was equivocal in 3/10 cases. Immunohistochemical evaluation, however, showed improvement in all 10 cases, as judged by increased urothelial BGA expression. This increase in urothelial BGA expression after intravesical mitomycin-C therapy suggests a therapy induced improvement in dysplastic urothelium which was not uniformly evident on routine histologic examination.

Notes: Summary Among the four strains of Pleurotus tested, hybrid strain A was found to degrade flax shive faster than the other three strains. Strain A produced more polygalacturonase, pectinlyase, cellulase and laccase enzymes than the other three strains of Pleurotus. Maximum activities of laccase and polysaccharide degrading enzymes were correlated with high weight loss, reduction in the yield of lignin and holocellulose and the degree of polymerisation of holocellulose. The addition of crude extract of flax shive on unextracted-shive increased the production of primordia of all the four strains, but it did not increase the degradation of flax shive. Flavonoid type compounds were detected in the crude extract of flax shive and they may be responsible for the increase in the production of mushroom primordia.
