Notes: Abstract The total cross section fore + e − annihilation into hadrons for center of mass energies from 9.4 to 9.5 GeV has been measured with the nonmagnetic DESY-Heidelberg detector at DORIS. A value ofR=σhad/σµµ=3.8±0.7 for the continuum region around the Υ (9.46) resonance has been determined. The ratioΓ ee Γ had/Γ tot of electronic, hadronic and total widths has been reevaluated to be (1.00±0.23) keV for the Υ resonance and (0.37±0.16) keV for the Υ′. In addition, a search for directly produced pohotons from Υ decays of the type Υ→γ+gluon+gluon has been performed. The Υ decay into muon pairs has also been searched for.

    Notes: Abstract A search has been made for new particles with chargeQ=2/3, 1, 4/3, 5/3 produced ine + e −-reactions at PETRA. The energy range wasE cm=27–35 GeV. No such particles were found. Upper limits for the cross-section depending on the assumed mass and production spectrum are given. ForQ=2/3 quarks with mass less than 12 GeV/c 2, upper limits $${{\sigma \left( {q\bar q} \right)} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{\sigma \left( {q\bar q} \right)} {\sigma \left( {\mu \mu } \right)}}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {\sigma \left( {\mu \mu } \right)}} \leqq 10^{ - 2} $$ (90% C.L.) are obtained both for inclusive and exclusive production. For the lifetime of theB-meson (m B =5GeV/c 2) an upper limit τ≦2×10−9s is obtained.

Notes: Abstract The kinetics of the catalytic elimination C2H5Cl→C2H4+ +HCl over MgSO4 and Al2O3 was studied at pressures between 2 and 35 torr and in the temperature range 280° to 430° C. A flow apparatus was used with He as carrier gas. Influences of diffusion and back reaction were avoided. At a given initial pressure the reaction obeys a first order kinetic law over the whole conversion. However, the rate constant decreases with increasing initial pressure. This is interpreted with aLangmuir type adsorption. The specific activity of MgSO4 (activation energy 28 kcal/mol) is roughly 1000 times higher than that of Al2O3 (activation energy 21 kcal/mol). This is due to a higher frequency factor of MgSO4.

Notes: Abstract Cross sections for the reactionse + e −→e + e − (Bhabha scattering) ande + e −→γγ are measured for center-of-mass (c.m.) energies $$\sqrt s $$ between 12.0 and 34.6 GeV. The results agree with the predictions of Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) and the cut-off parameters are determined. From Bhabha scattering at the highest energy, $$\left\langle {\sqrt s } \right\rangle = 34.6 GeV$$ , the 1 δ limits 0.12〈sin2 ϑ w 〈0.38 are obtained for the weak mixing angle. The higher order (α3) QED processese + e −→e + e −γ ande + e −→γγγ are also studied and are found to agree with the α3 QED predictions. A search for excited electrons is carried out by investigating the (e ±γ) invariant mass distribution in the reactione + e −→e + e −γ.

Notes: Abstract The mean charged multiplicity as well as its distribution has been measured as a function of c.m. energy in the reactione + e −→hadrons. Fragmentation models are compared with the data. After applying radiative corrections the mean charged multiplicity is measured to be 8.4±0.3±0.6 at 12 GeV, 13.1±0.3±0.6 at 30 GeV and 13.6±0.3±0.6 at 35 GeV. The ratio of mean charged multiplicity to the dispersion (〈N ch〉/D ch) is almost constant in the energy range studied, indicating KNO scaling of the charged multiplicity. The inclusive differential cross sections(dσ/dx p ) shows scaling violation in the highx p region (x p 〉0.15). The absolute value of the scaling violation is consistent with the result of 2nd order QCD calculations. The production of neutral kaons has been investigated by identifying the decayK S 0 →π+π−. The production probability for a strange quark relative to that of au ord quark in the fragmentation, γ s , has been determined to be 0.27±0.03±0.05 averaged over c.m. energies from 12 to 35 GeV. Momentum spectra for neutral kaons are presented and are compared with model predictions.

Notes: Summary Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida curiosa excrete surface active agents when incubated in water. The surface tension of cellfree supernatants shows reproducible discontinuities at about 15, 27, 43 and 61°C in the order of 0.2-0.9 dyn cm-1. Their position coincides with the kinks for water known from literature. With both yeasts fully corresponding discontinuities at 17°C and 27°C appeared in the curves of temperature dependent growth. The results are discussed in relation to microphysical and chemical reactions at the boundary zone of the cells towards the medium.

Notes: Abstract Chickens withB 2 B 2 MHC genotypes were made partially tolerant to B5 MHC cell-surface antigens and the fate of their Rous-sarcoma-virus (RSV)-induced tumors was determined.B 2 B 2 chickens partially tolerant to viable or lysed white blood cells (WBC) or viable red blood cells (RBC) fromB 5 B 5 chickens had a significantly higher incidence of tumor progression than untreated, PBS-treated, orB 2 B 2 chickens inoculated with WBC from otherB 2 B 2 chickens. The criteria for tolerance were absence of antibody titer to the cell type inoculated and acceptance of allografts fromB 5 B 5 donors byB 2 B 2 chickens. Graft-vs-host reactions occurred only inB 2 B 2 chickens inoculated with viable WBC fromB 5 B 5 chickens. It appears thatB 2 B 2 chickens partially tolerant to B5 antigens failed to mount a successful immune response to RSV-induced tumors partly because a B5 MHC antigen(s) cross-reacted with a tumor associated antigen(s) thereby severely limitingB 2 B 2 host recognition of the tumor as foreign. Since WBC and RBC cell-surface antigens appear to contribute similarly to the effect, theB-F- region of the MHC may be involved.

Notes: Abstract Lymphocytes from chickens homozygous (B 2 B 2) at the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) were tested for cytotoxic activity against five types of target chicken embryo fibroblasts (CEF). Lymphocytes from B2B2 chickens bearing RSV-induced tumors lysed in vitro targets of B 2 B 2 and B 5 B 5 RSV-infected CEF and B 5 B 5 normal CEF, but did not lyse B 2 B 2 and B 24 B 24 normal CEF. Lymphocytes from normal B 2 B 2 chickens did not lyse any of the five types of CEF targets. Alloantisera absorption studies showed that both RSV-infected and uninfected CEF shared alloantigens, in particular B-F alloantigens, with syngeneic erythrocytes. Absorption with B 2 B 2 RSV-infected CEF significantly lowered the titer of B 2 B 2 anti-B 5 B 5 alloantisera. Cross-reactivity between B 5 antigen(s) and tumor-associated antigen was suggested and the nature of the cross-reactivity was discussed. It is hypothesized that this cross-reactivity prevents B 5 B 5 chickens from recognizing RSV-induced tumors as foreign, enhances tumor growth and leads to death of the host.

Notes: Abstract The fraction of the total available energy carried by photons and the fraction carried by neutral particles of all types ine + e − multihadron final states have been measured at three centre-of-mass energies between 12 and 35 GeV. These fractions are approximately 27% and 37% with no strong dependence on centre-of-mass energy and the event topology. The neutrino energy fraction is estimated to be less than 10% at the 95% confidence level.
