Notes: A pair of dizygotic twins of opposite sex were incidentally found to be erythrocyte chimeras. The chimerism was found to include the lymphocyte population as well, since the twins differed for the maternal while sharing one paternal HLA haplotype. In addition to lymphocytes carrying antigens controlled by the inherited maternal haplotype, each of the twins had a small fraction—about 15%—of lymphocytes of the other twin's type. Birth twins are healthy and have normal children. Investigations of the family by mixed lymphocyte culture (MLC) and cell-mediated lympholysis (CML) tests showed that the two haplotypes by which the twins differed carried different HLA-D determinants; even so the lymphocytes of each twin were completely non-responsive in MLC and CML to those of the other twin. No ‘blocking’ factors could be demonstrated in the serum of the twins. These results support Burnet's theory of clonal selection in fetal life.

Notes: Summary Static pressure and elastance of the anal canal were investigated before and after treatment of hemorrhoids. Beside submucous sclerotherapy and hemorrhoid ectomy, a maximal anal dilatation was performed. With this dilatation treatment, second-degree hemorrhoids with a significant increase of anal elastance could be removed in a high percentage of cases (88%). Although the anal pressure and elastance were considerably lowered in the following months, no important complications appeared.

Notes: Abstract Total photon interaction cross sections at 10 energies between 59.6 and 1,332.5 keV have been determined for the elements V, Cu, Mo, Sn and U. Measurements were performed with the transmission technique using a high energy resolution Ge(Li) detector in a “good geometry” arrangement.

Notes: Abstract Accurate experimental internal conversion data have been used to study the effect of nuclear penetration in the case of thel-forbidden transitions in139La (165.8 keV),141Pr (145.4 keV) and203Tl (279.2 keV). The nuclear penetration parameterλ and theE2/M 1 mixing ratioδ 2 have been deduced by graphical analysis. Following results were obtained:λ=2.8±1.3,δ 2 =(8.4 −8.4 +14.0 )·10−4 for139La,λ=1.2±0.6,δ 2=(4.8±0.5)·10−3 for141Pr, andλ=6.4±1.1,δ 2=1.36±0.12 for203Tl.

Notes: Abstract The internal conversion process of the 165.8 keVγ-ray transition in the decay of139Ce has been reinvestigated. The emission rate of the K-shell internal conversion electrons was determined by an (electron)-(X-ray)-(X-ray) triple coincidence experiment using a magneticβ-spectrometer and two Si(Li) detectors. From electron spectra recorded as a function of momentum conversion electron ratios were also determined. The disintegration rate of the sources has been taken from 4πβ-γ coincidence experiments. The following results were obtained: the probability for internal conversion in theK-shellk K =0.1719±0.0020 and the conversion ratiosK/(L + M+...=5.84±0.17,K/L=7.45±0.20, andL/(M+...)=3.63±0.29. The internal conversion coefficients deduced area=(0.2520+0.0050),α K =(0.2152±0.0033), andα L =(0.0289±0.0012). The results are in good agreement with previous experimental values and with theoretical data calculated for a M1 transition of 165.8 keV in139La.

Notes: Abstract The decay of141Ce has been reinvestigated using different experimental methods. The efficiency extrapolation technique applied to 4πβ —γ coincidence measurements has been employed for the determination of the disintegration rate of the sources and of the total internal conversion coefficient. TheK X-ray andγ-ray emisssion rates have been measured with a calibrated Si(Li) and an intrinsic germanium detector. Additionally the photon intensities have been determined from the internal conversion coefficients. Electron experiments with a magneticβ-spectrometer yielded the relative intensities, the shape factors and the maximum energies of the two β−-transitions and the internal conversion ratiosK/L andK/(L + M+...). TheK-shell internal conversion probability has been determined with an electronK X-ray coincidence technique using the magneticβ-spectrometer together with a high energy resolution Si(Li) detector. New values for the following decay properties have been deduced:β −-intensities (p 1 =0.306 + 0.006,p 2= 0.694±0.006), shape factorsC = const (1+Aε) (A 1 = −(0.24±0.03),A 2=−(0.22±0.04)), maximumβ −-energies (E 01 = (582.2±2.6) keV,E 02= (436.7±4.6) keV),K- shell internal conversion coefficient (α K = 0.376±0.008), total internal conversion coefficient (α = 0.438±0.010), internal conversion ratios (K/L = 7.29±0.24, K/(L + M + ...) = 5.78±0.18),γ-ray intensity (I γ = 0.482±0.003),K X-ray intensity (IK X = 0.168±0.002) and the photon intensity ratio (I K X /I γ = 0.349±0.005). The procedure of uncertainty quotation is presented in some detail. The results are discussed with respect to existing experimental data.

Notes: Summary The pharmacokinetics of furosemide 40 mg i.v. were compared in 7 anephric patients and in 7 normal subjects. The average serum clearance was 66 ml/min in the patients and 219 ml/min in the normal subjects, and the corresponding weight corrected clearances were 1.33 ml/min · kg and 2.96 ml/min · kg. Binding to serum proteins was significantly decreased in the anephric subjects, in whom a significant negative correlation was found between the percentage binding and the volume of distribution VDss. In the patients, but not in the normal subjects, there was a significant positive correlation between $$V_{D_{ss} } $$ and serum clearance. Both in normal and anephric individuals 4-chlor-5-sulphamoylanthranilic-acid (CSA) was found, but there was no evidence of special accumulation either of CSA or anthranilic acid in the anephric patients. In the patients the initial increase in serum concentration of sodium and protein followed by a more conspicuous decrease were more pronounced, but none of the changes were statistically significant.
