Notes: Abstract “Thorotrast” was widely used in the past as an X-ray contrast medium, containing a colloidal solution of thorium dioxide (232ThO2). After injection, thorium accumulates and is mainly retained in the liver. Thus once Thorotrast is administered, patients might be chronically exposed to α-radiations. Recently, significant development of cirrhosis and cancer of the liver has often been noted among Thorotrast patients. Additionally the incidence of lung and breast disease has significantly increased. Thus, the assessment of internal radiation dose from deposits of Thorotrast is very important. In this report, the thorium content in various organs was determined by means of neutron activation analysis. All the samples were taken from organs of Thorotrast patients subsequent to death. The ashed samples were irradiated in a reactor. After cooling, the content of thorium was determined by measurement of gamma rays resulting from the decay of protactinium-233. For comparison, measurements by other analytical methods such as inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, colorimetric analysis using ArsenazoIII and radiation measurement of γ-rays from actinium-228, were carried out.

Notes: Abstract The liquid-phase sintering process of α′-sialon ceramics has been investigated by high-temperature dilatometry and microstructural observation. In addition, isothermal shrinkage measurements have been performed to examine the densification kinetic parameter. It has been confirmed that densification kinetic parameters in the solution-reprecipitation stage are much larger than the rate exponent predicted for the classic liquid-phase sintering model, and are slightly smaller than that for the viscous flow process. Rapid shrinkage was observed in the solution-reprecipitation stage from the results of shrinkage rate, and corresponds to pore elimination by particle rearrangement and cooperative flow of particle/liquid mixture. These processes provide the major contribution to shrinkage. In addition, the liquid flow process occurs when the silica content in the raw powder increases, but it is retarded due to the formation of α′-sialon. It is anticipated that particle rearrangement and cooperative flow, as well as liquid-flow processes, take place in the solution-reprecipitation stage of sintering of Si3N4-based materials, and cause a large amount of shrinkage.

Notes: Abstract Extremely large grain size AIN ceramics were produced by HIP sintering at an ultra-high temperature of 2773 K without reducing the oxygen content in order to determine experimentally whether the factor controlling thermal conductivity is either grain boundaries or the internal structure of the grains. The room-temperature thermal conductivity of the HIPed AIN with a grain size of ∼40 μm was 155 Wm−1 K−1, and was almost equal to that of the normally sintered AIN with a grain size of 4 μm. Therefore, thermal conductivity at room temperature is independent of AIN grain size, or the number and amount of grain-boundary phase for reasonably well-sintered AIN ceramics. The calculated phonon mean free path of sintered bodies was 10–30 nm at room temperature, which is too small to compare with the AIN grain size. Consequently, it is shown that the thermal conductivity of sintered AIN is controlled by the internal structure of the grains, such as oxygen solute atoms.

Notes: Abstract Rapidly quenched glasses in the V2O5-MO (M=Mg, Ca and Ba) systems have been prepared by a twin-roller technique. Glasses up to 40 mol% MgO and 50 mol% CaO or BaO were obtained. No metastable phase was observed in the crystallization processes. From the infrared spectral data for the glasses, the structural change of the glasses are discussed. The electrical conductivity of the glasses decreased with increasing MO content, and the electrical behaviour of the glasses has been related to the structural change of the glasses.
