Notes: Summary Five free-ranging white-footed mice, peromyscus leucopus, known to inhabit man-made nest boxes were captured during winter, surgically-implanted with temperature-sensitive radiotelemeters, and released at the site of capture. The body temperatures of mice which voluntarily inhabited nest boxes were monitored from a remote location with an AM receiver on 17 days. All five mice were able to maintain stable euthermic body temperatures (approximately 35–37°C during the day; 37–39°C at night) during exposure to subfreezing ambient temperatures. Two body temperature profiles of daily torpor were obtained from one animal. On both occasions, the mouse entered torpor approximately 2 hours before sunrise, maintained a minimum body temperature of 18°C, and was fully aroused by 1500h. The influence of thermoregulation (during euthermia and torpor) on energy expenditure and survival in free-ranging mice is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The authors present the problems and complications of the medial approach to the humeral diaphysis. They treated 30 fresh fractures, 4 nonunions and 6 metastases by this route. There were 7 neurological complications and two injuries of the brachial artery. They conclude that the medial approach to the humeral diaphysis must be reserved for fractures of the lower third without a primary radial palsy.

Notes: Abstract Arthroplasties represent one third of the 508 operations done for bony metastases of the limbs in our department over a 28-year period. They are mainly proximal femoral and in comparison to former methods convince us of their superiority. They remove the tumour, 3 out of 4 patients obtained pain relief and the immediate fixation allows a rapid resumption of good quality function in more than 80% of patients. The best results are obtained with massive total hip prostheses which, within the context of such palliative surgery, gives the best illusion of total cure.

Notes: Summary Whirligig beetles aggregate in the daytime into dense single-and multispecies groups (‘rafts’) of hundreds or thousands of individuals. On the 22km shoreline of Lake Itasca in northern Minnesota, these aggregations were on the average 0.8 km apart, and they were usually found day after day in the same ocations. Most beetles apparently do not ‘home’ to the aggregation of their origin after dispersing at night because (a) the species composition of some aggregations changed greatly, and (b) paint-marked beetles (Dineutus horni) moved overnight from one aggregation as far as 4km, joining 11 of the 14 large (〉300 beetles) D. horni groups on the lake. Throughout the night, the largest concentrations of beetles remained within 100m of the diurnal aggregation sites. Beetles reconvened into the compact rafts before daybreak, in part by following each other in sometimes long single files or ‘trains’. Their forward motion stopped after they joined large number of other beetles. We infer that following behavior enables those individuals that have dispersed from their original aggregations (during their nocturnal foraging) to find and join other aggregations before daylight. Naive fish ate the beetles despite their noxious secretions. However, fish living near rafting sites and feeding on insects on the water surface in daylight should soon learn to avoid the beetles. The rafting sites would then become ‘safe’ places. We observed fish attacking only those beetles that had been either dispersed from their rafts or released into open water away from raft sites in the daytime. We speculate that the evolutionary significance of the aggregation behavior is related to predator (fish) avoidance.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract
Notes: Abstract Isomerization of n-hexane over Pt/NH4NaY follows the reaction scheme k1, k2, kc linearly increase with increasing ammonia exchange degree in the zeolite and no significant changes in selectivity occur. During activation Al is partially removed from the lattice framework with the formation of HAlNaY.

Description / Table of Contents: Influence of oxygen additions during gas nitriding on the structure of the nitrided layersThe influence of controlled oxygen additions during gas nitriding of steels on the structure and built-up of the nitrided layers as well as on the nitriding reactions was investigated with metallurgical methods and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The results show that oxygen additions below the oxidising threshold slightly improve the nitriding behaviour of unalloyed steels. Furthermore, it is shown that for alloyed steel, which are tending to passivation starting form chromium concentrations of 3%, the nitriding can be considerably improved by oxygen additions. The passivation layers present for these steels are destroyed by external oxidation during the oxinitriding process. This external oxidation and the internal nitriding occurred parallel in the early stages of the oxinitriding.
