Notes: We have studied the feasibility of using carbon as a scanning tunneling microscopy tip material for experiments conducted under electrochemical environments. The tips were found to be stable and durable in acidic or alkaline solution for several hours. The fabricated carbon tips were capable of resolving graphite atoms in electrolyte solution under potentiostatic condition as well as in air.

Notes: Several Moll's gland cysts from 4 different patients were studied with the light and electron microscopes. The cysts were lined with a combination of several different epithelia, such as completely keralinized epithelium, glycogen-rich, stratified squamous epithelium with incompletely keratinized luminal cells, sweat duct epithelium, and secretory cells. In one case in addition to the above components, secretory-type wall cells contained very large lamellar inclusions which were PAS positive and diastase resistant. It was concluded that Moll's gland cyst is composed of dilated duct of the Moll's gland and secretory segment; the proportion of each segment is variable but the portion showing ductal differentiation is usually predominant and typical secretory epithelium is not always seen.

Notes: We report the clinical, histological and ultrastructural features of juvenile colloid milium affecting a brother and sister. In this rare condition, translucent papules develop on sun-exposed areas of skin, with onset in childhood. Histologically and ultrastructurally, the papules consist of amyloid-like material derived from epidermal keratonocytes. A review of the literature suggests a possible genetic abnormality that leads to sun-induced degeneration of keratinocytes.

Notes: Starch gel electrophoresis and isoelectric focusing were performed on sarcoplasmic proteins from three taxa of cobitid fish in Japan, Cobitis biwae, C. taenia striata and C. l. taenia. These taxa are hardly distinguishable from each other by external appearance or morphological characters. Electrophoretic patterns of sarcoplasmic proteins from white muscle suggested fixed allelic differences between C. biwae and C. t. striata at two protein-coding loci (parvalbumin and creatine kinase). The third taxon, C. t. taenia, showed composite banding patterns with respect to the above two proteins, suggesting C. t, taenia originated from hybridization between C. biwae and C, t. striata. Previously, C. t, taenia and C. t. striata were believed to have shared a common ancestor subsequent to their divergence from C. biwae.

Notes: Abstract By utilizing the characteristics of amorphous alloys capable of possessing specific electrocatalytic activity and corrosion resistance by alloying and surface activation treatment, an attempt was made to find amorphous alloys which are active as the anode material for production of sodium hypochlorite by electrolysis of seawater. Amorphous Ni-Nb and Ni-Ta alloys containing only 0.5–2.0 at % palladium and other platinum group metals showed a very high activity for chlorine production by electrolysis of 0.5M NaCl at 30°C when they were previously immersed in 46% HF for surface activation. The current efficiency of these surface-activated alloys for chlorine evolution considerably exceeded that of the currently used, most active Pt-Ir/Ti electrode for electrolysis of seawater. The surface activation treatment resulted in preferential dissolution of alloy constituents unnecessary for the electrocatalytic activity, i.e. nickel and valve metals, with a consequent enrichment of electrocatalytically active platinum group elements in the surface-activated layer. The corrosion weight loss of the surface-activated amorphous alloys under the steady state conditions for chlorine production was undetectable by a microbalance.

Notes: Abstract Powder catalysts were prepared by immersion of amorphous Ni-40Zr and Ni-40Ti alloys containing a few at % of platinum group elements in HF solution. This treatment led to preferential dissolution of the valve metal and nickel with a consequent formation of microcrystalline alloy powders consisting of concentrated platinum group elements and some nickel and valve metal. Porous gas-diffusion electrodes prepared by using these alloy catalyst powders were employed for electrochemical reduction of oxygen and oxidation of hydrogen in 1 M H2SO4 at 25°C. The activity of the electrodes prepared from the amorphous alloys containing Pt−Ru, Pt−Rh, Pt and Pd for oxygen reduction was considerably higher than that of the platinum black electrode. Oxidation of hydrogen occurred readily close to the equilibrium potential. Amorphous alloy electrodes containing Pt−Ru, Pt−Rh and Pt were more active than the platinum black electrode for the hydrogen oxidation.

Notes: Abstract Tissues of various organs of the starfish Astropecten polyacanthus collected in the Hiroshima Prefecture from April 1985 to June 1986 were analyzed for lethal potency by the assay method for tetrodotoxin. The ovary showed the highest potency (47 to 1 450 MU g-1), followed by the digestive organs (〈10 to 960 MU g-1) and the exoskeleton including spines and tube-feet (〈10 to 170 MU g-1). The pyloric caecum and testis were less toxic. Overall toxicity was remarkably higher in females (2 060±382 MU, mean±SE) than in males (1 106±214 MU).

Notes: Summary The polymorphism of FXIIIB was investigated in 555 unrelated Japanese individuals using isoelectric focusing and immunoblotting. Five common phenotypes and a rare variant type FXIIIB 15-3 were observed. The allele frequencies were FXIIIB*1 = 0.3063, FXIIIB*2 = 0.0162, FXIIIB*3 = 0.6766 and FXIIIB*15 = 0.0009. Phenotyping was also possible from bloodstains stored at 37°C for up to 4 months and from bloodstains stored at room temperature and at 4°C for over 6 months. The FXIIIB system can provide a new powerful genetic marker for the medicolegal grouping of bloodstains.
