    Notes: Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3(PZT)/Y1Ba2Cu3Ox(YBCO) heterostructures have been grown by pulsed laser deposition, in which PZT films were epitaxial, highly oriented, or polycrystalline. These PZT films were obtained by varying the deposition temperature from 550 to 760 °C or by using various substrates such as SrTiO3(100), MgO(100), and r-plane sapphire. PZT films with Pt top electrodes exhibited large fatigue with 35%–50% loss of the remanent polarization after 109 cycles, depending on the crystalline quality. Polycrystalline films showed better fatigue resistance than epitaxial or highly oriented films. However, PZT films with both top and bottom YBCO electrodes had significantly improved fatigue resistance for both epitaxial and polycrystalline films. Electrode material seems to be a more important parameter in fatigue than the crystalline quality of the PZT films.

    Notes: The complete ion cyclotron range of frequency (ICRF) heating system for the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) [Fusion Tech. 21, 1324 (1992)], consisting of four antennas and six generators designed to deliver 12.5 MW to the TFTR plasma, has now been installed. Recently a series of experiments has been conducted to explore the effect of ICRF heating on the performance of low recycling, supershot plasmas in minority and nonresonant electron heating regimes. The addition of up to 7.4 MW of ICRF power to full size (R∼2.6 m, a∼0.95 m), helium-3 minority, deuterium supershots heated with up to 30 MW of deuterium neutral-beam injection has resulted in a significant increase in core electron temperature (ΔTe=3–4 keV). Simulations of equivalent deuterium–tritium (D–T) supershots predict that such ICRF heating should result in an increase in βα(0)∼30%. Direct electron heating has been observed and has been found to be in agreement with theory. The ICRF heating has also been coupled to neutral-beam heated plasmas fueled by frozen deuterium pellets. In addition ICRF heated energetic ion tails have been used to simulate fusion alpha particles in high-recycling plasmas. Up to 11.4 MW of ICRF heating has been coupled into a hydrogen minority, high-recycling helium plasma and the first observation of the toroidal Alfvén eigenmode (TAE) instability driven by the energetic proton tail has been made in this regime.

    Notes: Abstract This 53-year-old white male presented with a 4-month-history of weakness and pain. Despite an initial partial response to steroid therapy, his neurologic deterioration progressed culminating in paraparesis, paresthesias, urinary incontinence, altered mentation and a 20 lb weight loss. A gadolinium-enhanced MRI study showed a pattern suggestive of perivascular involvement. A subsequent cerebral biopsy was diagnostic for neurosarcoidosis.

    Notes: Summary This study investigated whether reduced male aid in defending offspring potentially reduces the fitness of females choosing already-mated males in the house wren (Troglodytes aedon), a small, territorial songbird. Frozen snakes were placed at 23 nests of monogamously mated males and 12 “secondary” nests of bigamously mated males. All presentations were made during incubation stages of females attending focal nests. Snakes were placed at nests of secondary females when nests of their primary counterparts contained young 5–9 days old. Males are most attentive to primary nests during this period and should therefore be relatively inattentive to secondary mates and nests. Nevertheless, an equal proportion of monogamous and bigamous males discovered snakes within 15 min, and mean time to discovery, when discovery occurred, did not differ with nest status. Monogamous and bigamous males were also equally likely to attack snakes physically once discovered. Monogamous males appeared no more likely to discover snakes than bigamous males for two main reasons. First, although monogamous males were near focal nests (i.e., 〈 10 m) more often than bigamous males, monogamous males tended to stay out of view of nests for long periods. In contrast, bigamous males always went immediately to focal nests upon arriving in their vicinity. Second, about one-third of monogamous males in this study spent much of their time during trials at the far edges of their territories advertising for secondary mates. Our experiment suggests that reduced male aid in defending nests against small, diurnal predators probably does not contribute to the cost of polygyny in house wrens.
