Notes: We have included losses in the analysis of a 3N-port stripline/microstrip circulator and have reformulated the circulation conditions previously postulated for the lossless case. Our calculations have been compared to three published data on circulator designs biased below and above ferrimagnetic resonance. Scattering parameters at each port have been calculated as a function of assumed material losses and coupling capacitance of a multiport circulator. Wide transmission band or wide stop bands may be possible for a six port circulator biased above ferrimagnetic resonance. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Changes in the expression and function of adhesion molecules on the surface of cancer cells are important characteristics in the development of gastrointestinal malignancies and might be used in the future as prognostic factors or as new targets for diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. In esophageal cancer a down-regulation of the E-cadherin receptor and the cytoplasmic protein α-catenin is associated with tumor dedifferentiation, infiltrative growth and lymph-node metastasis. In gastric cancer a reduction of E-cadherin expression due to gene mutations is restricted to diffuse-type tumors while the occurrence of the CD44-standard and the CD44-9v isoform is significantly related to a higher tumor-induced mortality and a shorter survival time. The CD44-6v isoform is predominantly expressed by intestinal-type gastric carcinomas, giving these tumor cells the ability to perform lymph-node metastasis. In pancreatic cancer the expression of integrin adhesion receptors is significantly altered during the malignant transformation while a loss of the E-cadherin receptor can generate dedifferentiation and invasiveness of pancreas carcinoma cells. There is increasing evidence that integrin receptors as well as different isoforms of the CD44 receptor are altered following the malignant transformation of colonic mucosa into adenomas and invasive carcinomas. The expression of the CD44-6v isoform seems to be associated with an adverse prognosis in colorectal cancer due to the development of tumor metastases. A strong correlation has been observed between the expression of the 67-kDa laminin receptor and the degree of differentiation, the invasive phenotype and the metastatic abilities af colorectal cancer cells. Analyzing the expression of the E-cadherin receptor showed that this receptor may serve as an independent prognostic marker in Dukes' stage B colorectal cancer to identify patients with poor prognosis and designate them for intensive adjuvant therapy and clinical observation after curative surgical tumor treatment.

Notes: Abstract We reviewed a 7-year series of brain MRI examinations to determine the frequency and clinical significance of superficial siderosis of the central nervous system (SS). SS was defined by widespread bilateral signal loss at the surfaces of the cerebral or cerebellar hemispheres, the brain stem and the spinal cord on T2-weighted images. Clinical data comprised a neurological examination of identified patients and a review of their case notes. Among 8843 consecutive studies we identified 13 (0.15 %) patients with MRI evidence of SS. Only 2 had symptoms or signs characteristic of SS, such as cerebellar ataxia, hearing loss, myelopathy and dementia. Haemosiderin deposition was most widespread in both symptomatic individuals. A definite cause for SS was detected in 9 patients (69 %). None of them had a full clinical picture of SS. These data indicate SS per se to be much more frequent than may be assumed from the literature. It appears to become symptomatic only with extensive amounts of widespread iron deposition which develop preferentially with cryptic or unidentified causes of bleeding.

Notes: Abstract The purpose of our study was to evaluate mammographic image quality of various methods of reconstructive breast surgery with specific reference to the possibility of diagnosis of recurrent tumors. A total of 39 patients who underwent breast reconstruction following modified radical mastectomy were subject to clinical and mammographic examination. Three groups were formed: (a)autonomous tissue reconstruction (TRAM flap; n = 9), (b) submuscular silicon gel prostheses (n = 21), and (c) supramuscular silicon gel prostheses (n = 9). Mammographic image quality of the groups was compared by two radiologists working together using a point system where five specific criteria were valued and scored. The result was tabulated into three quality levels: good, acceptable, and limited. Mammograms were assessed as good, acceptable, or limited, respectively, as follows: group I: 7(77.8%), 1(11.1%), (111.1%): group II. 4 (19%), 11 (52.4%), 6 (28.6%)l; group III: 3 (33.3%), 4 (44.5%), 2 (22.2%). The TRAM-flap method of reconstruction displays a high degree of mammographie image quality and therefore is preferable with respect to early diagnosis of recurrent tumors.

Notes: Abstract Unmyelinated cutaneous mechano-heat fibers (CMH) in the peroneal nerve of healthy human volunteers were studied by means of a “marking” technique which allows stable recordings from identified single units over extended periods. Mechanoreceptive field sizes were 105±13 mm2 in 25 units. These large receptive fields indicate extensive terminal branching of C fibers in the skin of foot and lower leg. Sensitization of CMHs was tested by assessment of thresholds for mechanical (von Frey hair) and heat stimuli before and after topical application of mustard oil (allyl isothiocyanate) and capsaicin (8-methyl-N-vanillyl-6-noneamide). While in a group of 14 CMHs the entire receptive field was treated with these irritant substances, in another group of 11 CMH units only parts of the receptive field were treated to check for signs of spreading sensitization through axon collaterals. Mustard oil application did not change mechanical thresholds, regardless of whether parts of or complete receptive fields were treated. However, mean heat thresholds dropped by 5.6° C to 36.5±1.5°C in completely treated receptive fields and by 5.7° C to 37.3±3.4° C in treated parts of receptive fields (“primary sensitization”). In contrast, heat thresholds in the non-treated parts did not change significantly (42.1±3.4° C vs 41.2±3.9° C), i.e. “secondary sensitization” to heat was lacking. The absence of primary sensitization to probing with von Frey hairs indicates that sensitization of insensitive C fibers and recruitment of insensitive axon collaterals may be more important for mechanical hyperalgesia than sensitization of conventional CMH units — apart from the contribution of central mechanisms. The lack of spread of sensitization to untreated parts of the receptive fields o CMHs (“secondary sensitization”) indicates that this fiber group is probably not involved in any form of secondary hyperalgesia to heating.

Notes: Abstract The Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Mattis Dementia Rating Scale (MDRS) are among the most commonly used screening tests for dementia. The goals of our study were, firstly, to identify sociode-mographic factors which may explain the variance of test results in a community sample and, secondly, to investigate the interrelationship of these two dementia screening tests in order to evaluate the concurrent validity. A total of 1947 subjects were investigated in the setting of the Austrian Stroke Prevention Study (ASPS). Our study confirms most previous results demonstrating a relationship of higher dementia test scores with both younger age and higher educational level. Interestingly, the results we obtained suggest only a weak relationship and poor concurrent validity of the two tests. The total scores of the two tests show poor joint variance. This could lead to the conclusion that these tests evaluate different cognitive domains.

Notes: Abstract The solution conformation of two cyclicβ-casomorphin-5 analogues H-Tyr-c(-d-Orn-Phe-Pro-Gly-)1 and H-Tyr-c(-Orn-Phe-Pro-Gly-)2 in DMSO-d 6 was studied by NMR spectroscopy and accompanying force field calculations. By especially employing1H,13C, and15N chemical shifts, respectively, the temperature coefficient of the amide proton chemical shifts,3 J NH,CαH andJ CαH.CβH coupling constants, respectively, and nuclear Overhauser effects in the rotating frame (ROEs), in the case of1, only one preferred conformer could be identified. In the case of2, two or even more preferred conformers were found, readily interconverting on the NMR time scale. Empirical force field calculations using the SYBYL 6.0 software (TRIPOS) corroborate the experimental NMR results obtained. The conformational behavior of the compounds studied is discussed with respect to the receptor specificity of theβ-casomorphins studied.

Notes: Abstract  The middle repetitive fraction of the Arabidopsis genome has been relatively poorly characterized. We describe here a novel repetitive sequence cloned in the plasmid mi167, and present in ∼90 copies in the genome of Arabidopsis thaliana ecotype Columbia. Hybridization analysis to physically mapped YAC clones representing Arabidopsis chromosome 4 revealed four mi167-hybridizing loci, all clustered near the centromere. No other loci were detected on YAC clones covering chromosome 4. In situ hybridisation experiments to Arabidopsis chromosome spreads showed that mi167-hybridizing sequences are clustered at the centromeric heterochromatin of all five chromosomes; on two chromosomes the hybridization appeared to be localised on one arm. Additional mi167-hybridizing loci were detected, one of which was adjacent to a non-centromeric, heterochromatic region. This work supports the idea that the majority of middle repetitive DNA in the Arabidopsis genome is clustered. It also adds to our understanding of the organization of the centromere of Arabidopsis chromosome 4.
