    Notes: The wet process for the fabrication of Nd–Fe–B sintered magnets has been developed on the mass production scale. In this process, mineral oil is used as a solvent to prevent the milled powder and green bodies from oxidation. It is removed before sintering. As a result, the oxygen uptake during storage is less than 0.01 wt %/day. By reducing the oxygen content and the total rare earth (TRE) content in sintered magnets to less than 0.2 and 29.3 wt %, respectively, magnets with (BH)max/iHc greater than 50 MGOe/10 kOe, 45 MGOe/15 kOe, and 32 MGOe/32 kOe were obtained with high reliability. The magnets produced by this wet process also show better corrosion resistance and 20% higher mechanical strength than those made by conventional methods. These characteristics may be explained by a smaller grain size, smaller TRE content, and higher density produced by the wet process. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Spectroscopic properties of Er3+ in Ga2S3–GeS2–La2S3 glasses are investigated on the basis of the spontaneous emission probabilities calculated by the use of the Judd–Ofelt theory and lifetime data. Frequency upconversion spectra are also measured with excitation at 800 and 980 nm. The spontaneous emission probabilities are much larger than those of the other glass systems such as oxides and fluorides. This is mainly attributed to the large refractive indices of the sulfide glasses. The quantum efficiencies of 4I11/2 and 4F9/2 levels are comparable or larger than the typical values of Er3+ in a fluoride glass. This is a consequence of the large spontaneous emission probabilities and low phonon energies of the sulfide glasses. However, the quantum efficiency of the 4S3/2 level is less than one-half of the value in the fluoride glass. The nonradiative transition probability of the 4S3/2 level is much larger than the value which is evaluated from the multiphonon relaxation theory. This suggests the presence of the other nonradiative relaxation process in addition to the multiphonon relaxation. This process is considered to be the energy transfer from the excited Er3+ to the band-gap excitation of the matrix glass. In upconversion spectra, the 497 nm emission from the 4F7/2 level is observed in addition to the red (665 nm) and the green (533 and 552 nm) emission bands. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Optical absorption and multiphonon relaxation have been investigated for Nd3+-doped ZnCl2-based glass. The intensity parameters for radiative transitions of Nd3+ were determined to be Ω2=4.97×10−20 cm2, Ω4=7.39×10−20 cm2 and Ω6=5.12×10−20 cm2. All of the Ωt parameters, especially Ω4, of Nd3+ in the ZnCl2-based glass were large compared with those reported for oxide and fluoride glasses. Multiphonon relaxation rates for three emission levels of Nd3+ were determined from lifetime measurements. The multiphonon relaxation rates in the ZnCl2-based glass were extremely low, because of the low-phonon-energy of the matrix. Values were found to obey the energy-gap law in the same manner as the values in Er3+-doped ZnCl2-based glasses. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract: Activation of phospholipase D (PLD) is involved in receptor-mediated signal transduction responses. Signaling from PLD to a downstream molecule(s) appears to be mediated by the PLD product phosphatidic acid (PA). A target molecule(s) of PA, however, has not yet been identified. The present study sought to define such a target molecule(s) of PA. In bovine brain cytosol, proteins with apparent molecular weights of 29,000 (p29) and 32,000 (p32) were prominently phosphorylated in the presence of PA, but not in its absence, indicating that there is a PA-regulated protein kinase (PARK) in bovine brain that phosphorylates p29 and p32. One of these substrates, p29, was purified to near homogeneity. Its partial amino acid sequence was determined and found to be identical to that of a known brain-specific 25-kDa protein (p25). The purified p29 was also readily recognized by and immunoprecipitated with an anti-p25 antibody. These results suggest that p29 is very similar to or identical with p25. Using the purified p29 as a substrate, PARK was purified to near homogeneity. The purified PARK had an apparent molecular weight of 80,000, was strongly recognized by an anti-protein kinase C (PKC)α antibody, and was activated by phosphatidylserine (PS) as well as PA. The PA- and PS-stimulated PARK activity was extremely augmented by the presence of 1 µM free Ca2+. In the presence of 1 mM EGTA, phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate activated PARK synergistically with PA or PS. Similar results were obtained with the purified recombinant PKCα. From these results, it is suggested that the PARK activity purified might be attributed to PKCα. In p25-depleted bovine brain cytosol, which was prepared by treatment of bovine brain cytosol with the anti-p25 antibody, PA-dependent phosphorylation of p29, but not p32, was almost completely eliminated. When PKCα in bovine brain cytosol was depleted by its precipitation with the anti-PKCα antibody, neither p29 nor p32 in this PKCα-depleted cytosol was phosphorylated in the presence of PA. These results indicate that in bovine brain cytosol PA activates PKCα, which, in turn, phosphorylates p29, which may be identical with p25.

    Notes: Assimilation of nitrogen dioxide in response to fumigation with 15N-labelled nitrogen dioxide was studied in 217 plant taxa. The taxa included 50 wild herbaceous plants collected from roadsides (42 genera, 15 families), 60 cultivated herbaceous plants (55 genera, 30 families) and 107 cultivated woody plants (74 genera, 45 families). Two parameters, the ‘NO2-N content’, or NO2-derived reduced nitrogen content in fumigated plant leaves (mg N g–1 dry weight), and the ‘NO2-utilization index’, or percentage of the NO2-derived reduced nitrogen in the total reduced nitrogen, were determined. The NO2-N content differed 657-fold between the highest (Eucalyptus viminalis; 6·57) and lowest (Tillandsia ionantha and T. caput-medusae; 0·01) values in the 217 taxa; 62-fold in a family (Theaceae) and 26-fold in a species (Solidago altissima). Nine species had NO2-utilization indices greater than 10%, of which Magnolia kobus, Eucalyptus viminalis, Populus nigra, Nicotiana tabacum and Erechtites hieracifolia had NO2-N contents 〉 4·9. These plants can be considered ‘NO2-philic’ because in them NO2-nitrogen has an important function(s). The Compositae and Myrtaceae had high values for both parameters, whereas the monocots and gymnosperms had low ones. These findings suggest that the metabolic pathway of NO2-nitrogen differs among plant species. The information presented here will be useful for creating a novel vegetation technology to reduce the atmospheric concentration of nitrogen dioxide.

    Notes: Abstract. In order to improve the operation of a high-enthalpy free piston shock tunnel its tuned operation was studied analytically and experimentally. First, the piston motion in the free piston driver tube was analytically solved by proposing a simple piston/gasdynamic model, and the tuned operation condition was formulated as an eigenvalue with which the piston has sufficiently high speed at the moment of diaphragm rupture, so as to maintain a constant driver gas pressure, and reduces its speed to come to rest when very closely approaching the end of the driver tube. Second, the result of this analysis was validated by its comparison with experiments which were conducted in the medium-sized free piston shock tunnel HEK installed at the NAL Kakuda Research Center. By observing the detail of piston landing at the end of the driver tube the present tuned operation was found to be successfully achieved with the operating condition given here. Its advantages in improving the pressure recovery factor and in enhancing the stagnation enthalpy were successfully demonstrated.

    Notes: Abstract Explants (7.5±2.5 mm) cut from stems and roots of 3-week-old Eustoma grandiflorum Grise, (lisianthus) cv. Glory White seedlings were bombarded with plasmid pBI221, which harbors the uidA gene encoding β-glucuronidase (GUS) driven by the cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) 35S promoter. More than 800 blue spots of GUS-expressing cells were observed per 90 explants. Explants bombarded with pARK22 harboring the bar gene encoding phosphinothricin acetyltransferase driven by the CaMV 35S promoter were selected for bialaphos resistance. Putative transgenic plants were obtained about 3 months after bombardment. Southern blot analysis of putative transgenic plants revealed the presence of the bar gene in their genome.

    Notes: Abstract We reviewed the MRI studies of 25 patients with occipital lobe infarcts to clarify the distribution of infarcts in the posterior cerebral arterial territory, focussing on their relationship to the striate cortex. Visual field defects and MRI findings were also correlated in 16 patients. On coronal and/or sagittal images, the distribution of the infarct and its relationship to the striate cortex were classified. Involvement of the cortex of both upper and lower lips of the calcarine fissure was observed in 10 patients, and involvement of the lower lip alone in 15. The upper cortical lesions were always accompanied by lower cortical lesions. The visual field defects were complete hemianopia in nine patients, superior quadrantanopia in six and hemianopia with a preserved temporal crescent in one. All patients with superior quadrantanopia had involvement of the lower cortex alone; there were no cases of inferior quadrantanopia. The characteristic vascular anatomy, and poor development of the collateral circulation in the lower cortical area, may explain the vulnerability of this area to infarcts.

    Notes: Abstract We used constructive interference in steady state (CISS) 3D Fourier transform (3DFT) MRI data sets to obtain three-dimensional (3D) virtual MRI endoscopic views of the intracranial cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) spaces, processing them with a commercially available perspective endoscopic algorithm. We investigated the potential of the intracranial virtual MRI endoscopy applied to visualisation of the pathology in 13 patients with surgically confirmed trigeminal neuralgia (3), hemifacial spasm (3), acoustic neuroma (3), suprasellar germinoma (1), Langerhans cell histiocytosis (1), lateral ventricle nodules (1) and pituitary dwarfism (1). All images were acquired using a 1.5-T imager employing a circular polarised head coil. The CISS-3DFT data sets were transferred to a workstation for processing with the perspective endoscopic algorithm. Postprocessing for virtual MRI endoscopy was possible for all data sets. The lesions in 12 patients, and their complex anatomical relationships with the surrounding structures, were well seen on the 3D images. A small acoustic neuroma in the internal auditory meatus was not seen using virtual endoscopy. Although virtual MRI endoscopy has limitations, it provides 3D images which cannot be acquired using any other procedure.
