Notes: A short-period in-vacuum undulator for the NSLS X-ray Ring has been developed in a collaboration between SPring-8 and the NSLS, and has achieved its project design goals during commissioning studies. The device is called IVUN (in-vacuum undulator) and employs magnet arrays (31 periods, with an 11 mm period) developed at SPring-8, while the requisite vacuum chamber and mechanical systems were developed at the NSLS. At a magnet gap of 3.3 mm, IVUN produces 4.6 keV radiation in the fundamental, with useful photon fluxes in both the second and third harmonics. The magnet gap is adjustable between 2 and 10 mm. A brief overview of IVUN is presented, together with initial commissioning results: the dependence of electron-beam lifetime and bremsstrahlung on magnet gap, and the output radiation spectrum.

Notes: Measurement of integrated magnetic induction is an important part of the construction of insertion devices. The so-called `flipping coil system' is normally utilized to characterize the integrated multipole components of the device, a requirement which varies from one storage ring to another. A Helmholtz coil system is used to determine a magnetization vector of each magnet piece in the device. Both systems are designed to measure the integrated magnetic flux to deduce the necessary quantities using the known relationship. We have developed an unconventional system which has a continuously rotating mechanism that allows the use of a lock-in amplifier instead of an integrator or a voltmeter. Detailed descriptions of the equipment are given.

Notes: Abstract. Background: The term “junctional parenchyma” (JP) has been used to represent many renal anomalies including lobar dysmorphism; however, it has not been evaluated with modalities other than ultrasound (US). Methods: Twenty-two kidneys with lobar dysmorphism incidentally found on helical computed tomography (CT) were studied. In all cases, axial, multiplanar reformation, and three-dimensional images on corticomedullary phase scans were analyzed. Fifteen additional kidneys were prospectively examined with US, and we compared those sonograms with helical CT findings. Results: Comparison of the US and helical CT findings showed that the JP defect and the JP line corresponded anatomically to the upper aspect of the renal sinus and to the thick mural cortex originating from that point, extending inferiorly, respectively. The lesions of lobar dysmorphism were situated deep in the medulla, adjacent to the cortex; however, findings on helical CT did not indicate JP. Conclusions: Although JP may have been seen on US in this study, it did not show fusion remnants of subkidneys but a combination of the upper aspect of the renal sinus, the mural cortex, and the lesion of lobar dysmorphism.

Notes: Abstract  Our previous report identified 27- and 29-kDa calcium-binding proteins in porcine immature dental enamel. In this study we revealed that the N-terminal amino acid sequences of the two proteins were identical: LLANPXGXIPNLARGPAGRSRGPPG. The sequence matches a portion of the amino acid sequence of the porcine sheath protein, sheathlin. Porcine tooth germs were investigated immunochemically and immunohistochemically using specific antibodies raised against synthetic peptide that included residues 13–25 of this sequence. The affinity-purified antibodies reacted with several proteins extracted from newly formed immature enamel in immunochemical analyses, especially protein bands migrating at 62, 35–45, 29, and 27 kDa in SDS-polyacrylamide gels. The largest protein detected was a weak band near 70 kDa. In immunochemical analyses of proteins extracted from the inner (old) immature enamel, the antibody reacted faintly with the 27- and 29-kDa proteins. In immunohistochemical preparations, the Golgi apparatus and secretory granules of the secretory ameloblast, and the surface layer of immature enamel showed immunoreactivity. The immunoreactivity of immature enamel just beneath the secretory face of the Tomes’ process was intense. No immunoreactivity was found in the Golgi apparatus of the maturation ameloblast. These results suggest that the 70-kDa protein, whose degradation might be very fast, is the parent protein of the 27- and 29-kDa proteins.

Notes: Abstract We present a case of intestinal obstruction caused by a transomental hernia with an associated finding of a dissecting aneurysm of the superior mesenteric artery. These two rare conditions both cause acute abdomen with similar symptoms. This case shows the possible diagnostic pitfalls of transomental hernia.

Notes: Abstract We present the first observation of variation of the infrared spectrum of circumstellar dust emission around an oxygen-rich Mira variable star, Z Cyg, over an entire light variation cycle, based on the periodic SWS01 observations. The 10 µm and 20 µm ‘silicate features’ become stronger relative to the photospheric emission at maximum that at minimum. In addition, the relative intensity of the 10 µm to the 20 µm features increases at maximum, indicating an increase of the temperature of circumstellar dust grain. A simple model analysis suggests enhanced dust formation near the photosphere around maximum, leading to a scenario that dust nucleation may have occurred near minimum and the dust grains may have subsequently grown till maximum. The strong observed variation suggests that the variability must be taken into account in the interpretation of the infrared spectra of oxygen-rich Mira variables.

Notes: Abstract We examined the intracellular mechanisms of substance P induced oxyradical production in rheumatoid synovial cells by the luminol-dependent chemiluminescence method. After stimulation with substance P (30 μM), single synovial A (macrophage-like) or B (fibroblast-like) cells released oxyradicals such as superoxide anions (OZ) and/or hypochlorous anions (OCl−) under a microscope equipped with an ultrasensitive photonic image intensifier. The substance P induced oxyradical production was blocked by a tachykinin NK1 (NK1) receptor antagonist, GR82334, GTP-binding protein (G-protein) inactivators, GDPβS and islet-activating protein (IAP), and a phospholipase C (PLC) inhibitor, U-73122. Substance P (30 μM) also induced a transient increase in the intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) in both synovial A and B cells as measured by a Ca2+ indicator, fura 2. BAPTA-AM and an inositol-1,4-5-triphosphate (IP3) receptor antagonist, heparin, inhibited the substance P induced increase in [Ca2+]i, but they had no effects on oxyradical production. In contrast to the effects of BAPTA-AM and heparin, protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitors, H-7 and calphostin C, completely inhibited substance P induced oxyradical production without any significant effects on [Ca2+]i increase. These findings suggest that the NK1 receptor/PLC-linked diacylglycerol (DAG) formation with the resulting activation of PKC is the main signal transduction pathway for substance P stimulated oxyradical production in synovial cells.

Notes: Abstract We report preliminary results of our systematic survey for infrared stars in the globular clusters of the Magellanic Clouds. In the course of an ISOCAM survey for AGB stars in the intermediate-age clusters, we have discovered extremely red AGB stars in NGC 419 and NGC 1978. From their colours and luminosities, they are thought to be experiencing intense mass-loss and to be in the final or superwind phase of the AGB evolution. However, they seem to be of somewhat lower luminosity than the corresponding visible AGB stars when only the mid-infrared data are taken into account. This suggests that hitherto unobserved infrared excesses may exist at longer wavelengths.

Notes: Abstract. Infrared absorption measurements using a multiple internal reflection geometry are reported for condensed methanol at 90 K on Ag island films deposited on the oxidized and hydrogen-terminated surfaces of Si(111). The attenuated total reflection (ATR) spectra obtained as a function of methanol exposure (up to 14 L) show that a 1-nm mass thickness of Ag island film on the oxidized Si(111) surface yields an absorption intensity 2–3 times larger than the intensity in the absence of Ag on the oxidized surface. Deposition of the same thickness of Ag on the hydrogen-terminated Si(111) surface results in approximately twice the enhancement. The different magnitudes of the enhancement are discussed based on SEM micrographs for Ag island films formed on the oxidized and H-terminated Si(111) surfaces.
