Notes: Abstract Using an antibody raised against d-glucose dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.99.17) purified from Pseudomonas fluorescens, immuno-cross-reactivity with the enzymes from several bacterial strains and localization of the enzyme in Escherichia coli were examined. The antibody cross-reacted with glucose dehydrogenases from various Gram-negative bacteria examined. As a result, it became apparent that the enzymes from Gluconobacter, Acetobacter, Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter, which existed as holoenzymes in the membranes, had lower molecular weights than those from E. coli and Klebsiella, which were apoenzymes.Treatment with trypsin of right-side out and inside-out membrane vesicles from E. coli clearly demonstrated that d-glucose dehydrogenase was located on the outer surface of the cytoplasmic membrane of E. coli, as had been suggested for Pseudomonas.

Notes: Abstract This report describes a dot enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (Dot-ELISA) for detecting circulating antigens in the sera of dogs infected with Dirofilaria immitis (D. immitis). Circulating D. immitis antigens could be detected in 24 of 25 infected dogs. The remaining animal had two immature worms. However, non-infected dogs and dogs infected with other parasites were all negative, Few cross-reactions to different parasite antigens were observed. The advantages of the Dot-ELISA include; 1) there is no need for pretreatment and dilution of sera and samples could be immediately bound to nitrocellulose paper set into microfiltration apparatus, 2) this assay could be carried out within 2 h at room temperature, 3) the resulting enzyme-reaction could be measured by both visual observation and densitometric reading.

Notes: Summary In an attempt to find a reliable method to assess fever in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), a multifactorial analysis was applied to the routine laboratory examinations, including white blood cell count (WBC) and serum globulin fraction concentrations. During 74 febrile episodes, 49 SLE patients showed increased disease activity and the remaining 25 febrile episodes were due to intercurrent infection. The two different groups of fever episodes were clearly separated by a principal component analysis using five variables from the routine laboratory tests, including WBC, serum alpha-1, alpha-2, beta, and gamma globulins. Discriminant analysis showed that 95% of 74 febrile episodes could be correctly classified as to the cause of fever when a combination of WBC and alpha-2 globulin level was used as variables. A simple discriminant formula which we calculated was considered to be of practical use for the differentiation of the two clinical entities.

Notes: Summary We measured U1-RNP: anti-U1-RNP immune complexes (U1-RNP ICs) in patients with mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) to examine the clinical significance of circulating U1-RNP ICs. The level of U1-RNP ICs in 11 patients with MCTD was significantly higher than that in 22 normal subjects and there was a close correlation between the level of U1-RNP ICs and the clinical disease activity index of MCTD. In contrast, the level of U1-RNP ICs in 31 patients with SLE was not significantly higher than that in normal subjects and that was not correlated with the clinical disease activity index of SLE or the renal histologic activity index of lupus nephritis. We conclude that U1-RNP ICs are present in sera of patients with MCTD and SLE, and that the level of U1-RNP ICs may be closely associated with clinical disease activity in patients with MCTD.

Notes: Abstract The dispersion and coagulation phenomena of iron(III) hydroxide sols were investigated as a function of pH in the absence and presence of amino acids. The amino acids used were glycine,L-α-alanine,DL-α-amino-n-butyric acid,L-valine,L-leucine,L- isoleucine,L-glutamic acid andL-arginine. The turbidity measurements of the iron-(III) hydroxide sols, which were prepared by pouring an aqueous iron(III) chloride solution into boiling distilled water, were carried out using a spectrophotometer with an addermixer device and an automatic recording system. The zeta potentials of sol particles were obtained by ultra-microelectrophoresis. The change in turbidity of the sol, as a measure in stability of the sol, increased with increasing pH in the region of pH 2–8, and reached a maximum at the isoelectric point of the particles. The coagulation at the isoelectric point was prevented by adding amino acids, and the stabilization had an optimum point at concentrations which depended upon the kinds of amino acids. The remarkable dispersing effect of amino acids which occurred near the isoelectric point of the particles at the suitable concentration of the ammo acids may be due to the steric protection by amino acid adsorbed. The protective action was explained according to a modified DLVO theory, the modification for London-van der Waals force being applied in order to take the effect of the adsorption layer into account.

Notes: Abstract A new-type redox battery has been developed. Some ruthenium complexes in organic electrolyte solution were utilized as the electrode active materials. A single cell consisting of [Ru(bpy)3]2+ complex in acetonitrile solution had an open circuit voltage of 2.6 V and a discharge current of 5 mA cm−2 (at a smooth carbon electrode). The characteristics of this type of cell were much influenced by such factors as the diaphragm material and the concentration of the complex. A cell with flowing electrolyte was also constructed and its charge-discharge performance was examined.

Notes: Summary We measured α2-plasmin inhibitor-plasmin complexes (PI-PC) in plasma of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) to examine the plasminogen activation in SLE. The plasma PI-PC level in 23 patients with SLE was significantly higher than that in 18 normal subjects (P〈0.001) and the SLE patients with nephrotic syndrome had higher plasma PI-PC levels than those without nephrotic syndrome (P〈0.01). In addition, the plasma PI-PC level was significantly correlated with the level of plasma C3 breakdown products (iC3b/C3dg) in the patients with SLE (r=0.53, P〈0.01). These results suggest that plasminogen is activated in plasma of patients with SLE and that the plasminogen activation may be associated with the activation of complement in SLE.

Notes: Summary A finite element scheme is presented in this paper to simulate fields of temperature and deformation as well as stress in the steady continuous casting process. A steady heat conduction equation incorporating heat generation due to solidification is formulated when considering the effect of flow rate. A viscoplastic constitutive model capable to describing elastic-viscoplastic solids as well as a viscous fluid is developed for the stress analysis. As an illustrative example a vertical continuous casting process is simulated by use of the finite element method, and the calculated results of temperature, deformation and stress in a slab are discussed.
