Notes: In the United States, minority women are at risk of HIV infection and comprise a disproportionate share of daytime soap opera viewers. In August 2001, a soap opera subplot delivered HIV prevention messages to viewers and displayed the National STD and AIDS Hotline's toll-free number (800–342–2437) after 2 episodes. On both days, the number of attempted calls to the Hotline in the 1-hour time slots during and just after the 30-minute broadcasts rose dramatically. These increases in information-seeking behavior are consistent with predictions based on social cognitive theory, the health belief model, and various models of information processing. The increases also provide support for the Education-Entertainment approach and underscore the importance of a productive partnership between public health and the entertainment industry.

Notes: Abstract The sensitivity of the dopaminergic hypothalamic pituitary system, as indicated by growth hormone (GH) release after apomorphine (0.5 mg SC), was studied in 11 chronic schizophrenic in-patients under long-term neuroleptic (NL) therapy and after 12 and 30 days' drug withdrawal. GH peak levels after a 12-day drug-free period were significantly elevated (13.1±12 ng/ml) as compared to NL therapy (4.6±6.1 ng/ml). Controls showed a significant higher mean peak GH response (13.6±10 ng/ml) compared to chronic schizophrenic patients under long-term NL therapy. The GH response of patients with symptoms of tardive dyskinesia (TD) did not differ significantly from that of patients without signs of TD. The prolactin (PRL) serum levels under long-term NL treatment were within the normal range in male schizophrenics but decreased significantly after 12 days' drug withdrawal. The data presented indicate a reduced sensitivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary dopamine receptors under long-term NL therapy. The significant increase in GH response on day 12 probably corresponds to a readjustment from a mostly blunted GH response under NL therapy back to stimulated levels of normal controls. No supersensitivity of the pituitary dopamine recpetors could be detected.

Notes: Abstract An improved microsurgical technique for orthotopic rat kidney transplantation is described in detail. (1) End-to-end anastomosis of renal arteries with 7–8 interrupted 10-0 sutures. (2) End-to-end anastomosis of renal veins with 2 continuous semicircular 10-0 sutures. (3) Non-splinted end-to-end ureteric anastomosis with 4 interrupted full-thickness 11-0 sutures. (4) Simultaneous bilateral nephrectomy. Seventy transplantations were analysed. No failure due to complications of the vascular anastomoses occurred. The ureteric anastomoses were complicated by stenosis in only 5 animals (7%). The operation times for vascular anastomoses were 20 (15–24) minutes and for complete transplantation 50 (45–60) minutes. This technique seems to be less time consuming than other methods. Our method has produced a success rate of 93% with well standardized and reproducible organ quality. Preliminary clinical experiences with extracorporeal microvascular reconstruction in 4 cases of injured small polar kidney allograft arteries support the continued application in appropriate situations to increase the number of suitable donor kidneys.

Notes: Abstract Retroelements are ubiquitous features of eukaryotic genomes, often accounting for a substantial fraction of their total DNA content. One major group of retroelements, which includes the gypsy and copia-like elements, is distinguished by the presence of long terminal repeats (LTRs). We have identified and partially characterized a sequence from banana (Musa acuminata cv. Grand Nain) which shows significant homology to gypsy-like LTR retroelements from other species. The element, named monkey, shows a high degree of homology to the reverse transcriptase, RNase H and integrase genes of retroelements from plants, fungi and yeast. However, several stop codons are present in the major ORF of this element, suggesting that this copy of monkey, if functional, is non-autonomous. Southern analysis indicated that monkey is present in both the A and B genomes of Musa, and that it is found in 200–500 copies per haploid genome in cv. Grand Nain. Chromosomal localization by fluorescent in-situ hybridization indicates that copies of monkey are concentrated in the nucleolar organizer regions and colocalize with rRNA genes. Other copies of monkey appear to be dispersed throughout the genome.

Notes: Abstract Pediatric cadaver donors are an important pool of kidneys for human allotransplantation. Experiences with 97 transplantations of pediatric cadaveric kidneys (age: 4 months to 15 years) and comparison with 230 transplantations of adult kidneys (age: 16–25 and 40–68 years) are presented. The cumulative patient survival was similar in both groups, however, the graft survival was significantly lower in the pediatric donor group (p〈0.05). This difference was established almost exclusively within the first 3 months after transplantation. In this group the percentage of technical complications in the first month was higher (13.4%) than in the adult kidney group (6.5%). The analysis of the whole pool of harvested kidneys shows a significantly higher rate of transplanted kidneys in the pediatric group (61%) as compared with the adult group (44.7%). In both groups the mode of arterial vascular anastomosis (end-to-end or end-to-side) does not influence the graft survival. Further investigations on pediatric donor kidneys are necessary. The utilization of pediatric cadaveric kidneys for transplantation should be increased because 20–25% of all potential kidney donors are younger than 15 years.

Notes: Abstract The effect of hot isostatic pressing on the properties of sintered beta-alumina has been investigated. The mechanical strength is increased as compared with as-sintered material. The ionic resistivity is decreased by hot isostatic pressing but this has been shown to be related to the heat treatment rather than the application of pressure. The changes in mechanical and electrical properties are related to changes in ceramic microstructure.
