Notes: Changes in the synthetic activities of nucleic acids and protein and in the amount of adenine nucleotides in Daucus carota cells have been examined during a period of rapid cell division and during the stationary phase. Cell growth and the syntheses of those macromolecules in the logarithmic phase were significantly enhanced by increasing the concentration of phosphate in the medium. In a phosphate-rich medium, RNA and protein rapidly degraded and the number of cells with denatured cytoplasm increased when the culture entered into a stationary phase because of exhaustion of glucose. On the other hand, when the growth ceased by exhaustions of phosphate and nitrogen, the cells slowly underwent physiological changes leading to cellular senescence. The value of adenylate energy charge during the growth period was about 0.8–0.9 irrespective of the growth rate. After cessation of growth the value declined to about 0.5.

Notes: Abstract: Angular distributions of fission fragments with mass number A=97-159 have been measured by the radiochemical recoil-catcher method in the proton-induced fission of 244Pu with the incident energy of 15 MeV. Angular anisotropies of extreme asymmetric mass division products even up to the fragment mass ratio of A H /A L ∼ 1.85 are found not any different from those of the typical asymmetric mass division products with A∼ 138, which indicates that no clear evidence is observed for the existence of an additional saddle point configuration in the extreme asymmetric mass division. The correlation between the saddle point state evaluated from the angular anisotropy and the mass division mode is discussed.

Notes: Abstract New neutron-deficient isotopes,197Rn,197mRn, and200Fr have been produced and identified on the basis of genetic correlations in the166Er(36Ar,5n)197Rn (Elab=186, 200 MeV), and169Tm(36Ar,5n)200Fr (Elab=186 MeV) reactions. The evaporation residues were separated from the beam by using a gas-filled recoil separator and implanted onto a position-sensitive solid-state detector. The α-decay energies (half-lives) of197Rn,197mRn and200Fr have been determined to be 7261±30 keV (51 −15 +35 ms), 7370±30 keV (18 −5 +9 ms), and 7500±3O keV, (570 −140 +270 ms), respectively.

Notes: Abstract Nondestructive determination of major and trace elements within voluminous materials has been demonstrated by prompt γ-ray neutron activation analysis. Some fragmented pieces of pottery bowls considered to have been produced in the late 18th century were analyzed by a new internal monostandard method, and noticeable differences of the elemental contents and significant correlations of the elemental distributions were observed among the samples. The possibility of identification of producing areas of unearthened material is demonstrated by the analytical results and the applicability of this method to the investigation of precious samples in a completely nondestructive way is verified in practice.

Notes: Abstract Time-differential perturbed angular correlation method was applied to Ce@C82 in order to investigate the electronic properties of the encaged Ce atom. The nuclear quadrupole frequency of the nuclear spin of the Ce was successfully determined as ωQ = 6.5(3)·107 rad/s, which is much greater than what has already been estimated for Ce4+ and La3+ in other compounds. By comparing the present value with the values for the Ce4+ and La3+, it was inferred that the valence state of the encaged Ce atom is trivalent.

Notes: Abstract The stability of 16 kinds of metallofullerenes (9 elements) was investigated against the recoil phenomena associated with the capture of neutrons by the metal atoms inside the carbon cages. The yields of the unaffected species were obtained by use of the HPLC separation method and radioactivity measurements. Recoil energy distributions of the metal atoms were calculated theoretically and the effective energy required for destruction of metallofullerenes from inside by recoiling atoms was estimated to be about 10 to 15 eV for the metallofullerenes containing lanthanide atoms.

Notes: Abstract The effect of β−-decay on the stability of metallofullerenes was investigated for three decay chains of155Sm-155Eu,161Gd-161Tb and177Yb-177Lu. For the former two cases, the metallofullerenes were found stable even after the β−-decay while in the case of177Yb, the metallofullerene became unstable after β−-decay. The present results point to the fact that metallofullerenes are stable against ordinary β−-decay unstable after β−-decay. The present results point to the fact that metallofullerenes are stable against ordinary β−-decay recoil energies, but they become unstable if the oxidation state of the metal atom is changed by nuclear transformation.

Notes: Abstract The correlation among the fission threshold energy, the scission configuration and the mass yield distribution has been studied in proton-induced fission of light actinides. It was found that there exist at least two fission paths from the threshold region to the scission. The elongated scission configuration is related with the fission process that goes over a higher threshold energy and results in a symmetric mass division mode, while the compact scission configuration with the process that experiences a lower threshold and ends up with an asymmetric mass division mode.

Notes: Abstract Two kinds of scission configurations for certain mass division have been verified by the accurate measurements of fragment velocities in protoninduced fission of actinides: compact and elongated scission configurations. A correlation between the binary scission configurations and mass yield distributions reveals that elongated scission configurations are associated with the symmetric mass distribution and compact scission configurations with the asymmetric mass distribution. The elongation properties of nuclei at scission in a wide range of actinides fissions are studied. The results suggest that the compact and the elongated scission configurations in light actinides fission smoothly change to the scission properties of the symmetric and the asymmetic modes in heavy actinides fission.

Notes: Abstract Fullerenes, C60 and C70, were irradiated by 8 and 10 MeV deuterons. The irradiated samples were dissolved in CS2 and filtered to remove insoluble by-products. Finally, radioactive fullerenes and products, such as fullerene dimers, trimers labeled with13N, were isolated and detected in the liquid phase by radiochromatography. This suggests that the energy rich13N atoms successfully incorporated into the fullerene cages and that the disrupted cages reacted with neighboring cages.
