Notes: Asymmetry introduced to an otherwise planar phased array Bragg cell transducer design results in the elimination of one of two steering acoustic wave fronts. Therefore, all of the acoustic power is applied to the acousto-optic interaction process. In addition, a factor of 1.8 improvement in wide-band acousto-optic Bragg cell interaction efficiency is realized over the planar phased array design. The technique to establish the asymmetry was to use a periodic silver film as a quarter-wave step. This new technique is particularly suitable for the construction of wideband Bragg cells at microwave frequencies.

Notes: A multiorifice spray generator with two different modes of operation is developed. The impulse jet operation mode covers a wide range of droplet frequencies and produces arrays of droplets with controllable spacing, but with a wide size spectrum. This ejector also operates in pressurized flow mode. In this mode, optimum disturbance frequency breaks up the liquid jets into uniform size droplets, resulting in a monosized spray. Precise control of fuel flow rate and droplet size is achieved.

Notes: In situ epitaxial growth of YBa2Cu3O7−x superconducting thin films on (100)BaF2 substrates has been successful by an off-axis dc planar magnetron sputtering method. The zero-resistance temperatures of these thin films are about 81–84 K with transition width of 1.5 K. The characteristics of the films were examined by x-ray diffraction, reflection high energy electron diffraction, Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy ion channeling techniques, and scanning electron microscopy. The experimental results suggest that BaF2 is a promising material as substrates or buffer layers for the epitaxial growth of high Tc superconducting thin films, especially in high frequency applications. Discussions on the heteroepitaxy of the YBCO/BaF2 system are propounded.

Notes: Abstract A solid electrolyte CO2 sensor using a sodium ionic conductor and a lithium carbonate-based auxiliary phase was investigated. The sensor responded excellently to CO2 in the temperature range of 350–600° C, without being affected by coexistent water vapor. The EMF responses to varying partial pressures of CO2 (P CO 2) followed a 2-electron reaction of CO2 under fixed P O 2. Under fixed P CO 2 (2×10−3 atm), the EMF was found to be almost independent of P O 2 at temperatures above 450° C, while it depended on P O 2 following a 2-electron reaction of O2 at 305° C and below. Two alternative sensing electrode reactions were proposed to take place depending on the working temperature.

Notes: Abstract The heat-labile enterotoxins (LT) produced by various porcine strains (LTp) of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli were purified to homogeneity and their molecular properties were compared with each other. By double gel diffusion and rabbit skin permeability test, LTps from WT-1 (LTp-WT-1) and BO-149 (LTp-BO-149) strains were antigenically and biologically identical. By polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), the mobilities of A and B subunits of LTp (BO-149) were identical to those of LTp (WT-1). However, on polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis without SDS, LTp (BO-149) and LTp (WT-1) differed in mobility, suggesting their molecular differences. Though the pI value of the B subunit of LTp (BO-149) was identical to that of LTp (WT-1), the pI value of the A subunit of LTp (BO-149) was higher than that of LTp (WT-1). These data suggest that there is molecular heterogeneity among LTps produced by the two porcine enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli strains.

Notes: The physical phenomena associated with two-phase annular-mist flow in vertical pipes are considered. A new mechanistic model is developed to predict liquid entrainment, liquid film thickness, in situ velocities, and pressure drop. The model is compared to field data and found to be superior to the three commonly used empirical correlations.

Notes: Summary Studies have been carried out to compare different detection techniques including amperometric detection in the reductive and oxidative mode and UV detection following the HPLC separation of pesticides. By the example of 4,6-dinitro-o-cresol (DNOC), 2-sec-butyl-4,6-dinitrophenol (Dinoseb) and 2-tert-butyl-4,6-dinitrophenol (Dinoterb), it is shown that the electrochemical detection exhibits higher sensitivities than the UV-technique. The detection limits are in case of the oxidative amperometric technique 0.1 ng for all pesticides, in the reductive mode 0.3 ng for DNOC and 1 ng for Dinoseb and Dinoterb. By UV-monitoring the detection limits were found to be 2 ng for DNOC and 24 ng for Dinoseb and Dinoterb.
