Notes: Abstract The so-called edge problem, i.e., the traction discontinuity at edges or corners of the domain, is solved for the case of the transversely isotropic material being introduced into 3D BEM. The auxiliary relationship equations for the additional traction components are derived and the arbitrary inclination of the isotropic plane of the material is taken into account in the mean time. An example is given, and the comparison of the numerical result of the example with the theoritical solution is also illustrated.

Notes: Summary Possible color vision loss was examined with Lanthony's new color test and Ishihara's color vision test in 261 solvent workers and 120 controls (48 men and 72 women). The solvent workers were exposed to either predominantly toluene [46 ppm as geometric mean (GM); 63 men and 111 women], tetrachloroethylene alone (13 ppm; 30 men and 34 women), or a mixture (14 men and 9 women) of tetrachloroethylene (12 ppm) and trichloroethylene (7 ppm). The only instances of color vision loss that were detected in either the exposed workers or the controls were six cases of red-green loss (all in men). These six cases of red-green loss showed an unbiased distribution between the exposed workers and the nonexposed controls.

Notes: Summary The correlation between exposure to three xylene isomers and resulting urinary excretion of corresponding methylhippuric acid (MHA) isomers was studied among 175 Chinese workers of both sexes who had been predominantly exposed to xylenes (exposure to xylenes accounting for 70% or more of the total exposure on a ppm basis). Nonexposed controls (281 men and women) were also studied to define the background level of MHAs in urine. The solvent exposure of xylene-exposed workers during their workshift was monitored by diffusive sampling of breathing zone air, and MHAs in shift-end urine were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. Regression analysis showed that the concentration of each MHA isomer correlated significantly with the time-weighted average intensity of exposure to the corresponding xylene isomer, and therefore the correlation between the sum of three xylene isomers in air and that of three MHA isomers in urine was also significant; the slope of the regression line was essentially the same among the three isomers. The calculated regression line suggested that the urinary MHA level after hypothetical exposure to xylenes at 100 ppm will be somewhat less than the proposed biological exposure index and biological tolerance value. Two social habits of smoking and drinking in combination suppressed the conversion of xylenes to MHAs in male workers.

Notes: Summary LetG be ad-dimensional bounded Euclidean domain, H1 (G) the set off in L2(G) such that ∇f (defined in the distribution sense) is in L2(G). Reflecting diffusion processes associated with the Dirichlet spaces (H1(G), ℰ) on L2(G, σdx) are considered in this paper, where A=(aij is a symmetric, bounded, uniformly ellipticd×d matrix-valued function such thata ij ∈H1(G) for eachi,j, and σ∈H1(G) is a positive bounded function onG which is bounded away from zero. A Skorokhod decomposition is derived for the continuous reflecting Markov processes associated with (H1(G), ℰ) having starting points inG under a mild condition which is satisfied when ϖG has finite (d−1)-dimensional lower Minkowski content.

Notes: Summary Reflecting diffusion processes on smooth domains in Euclidean space are well understood. Silverstein in [22] and [23] developed two variant procedures for constructing the reflected processes for a general class of symmetric Hunt processes from a Dirichlet space point of view. A direct approach is given in this paper and these two variant procedures are shown to yield the same result. Only the techniques of martingales and ordinary Markov processes are used.

Notes: Summary The manifold metric between two points in a planar domain is the minimum of the lengths of piecewiseC 1 curves in the domain connecting these two points. We define a bounded simply connected planar region to be a pseudo Jordan domain if its boundary under the manifold metric is topologically homeomorphic to the unit circle. It is shown that reflecting Brownian motionX on a pseudo Jordan domain can be constructed starting at all points except those in a boundary subset of capacity zero.X has the expected Skorokhod decomposition under a condition which is satisfied when ∂G has finite 1-dimensional lower Minkowski content.

Notes: Summary Approximate Markov process defined on the extended sample space plays an important role in the theory of Dirichlet Space. In this paper, stochastic analysis is studied on the extended sample space including the Stratonovitch integral, Ito's formula, etc. and a tightness and continuity results about excursion laws of the processes associated to a sequence of Dirichlet spaces is obtained by following an idea of Lyons and Zheng. These results are applied back to the standard sample space, which improve a few results about the additive functionals and also enable us to obtain the Lyons and Zheng's tightness and continuity results in the situation where the processes may blow up and have killings. Connections between the Stratonovitch integrals on the extended sample space and that defined by Nakao with respect to a function in the Dirichlet space is made.

Notes: Experiments show that ruthenium [Ru(III)] has a very strong catalytic effect on the slow redox reaction between fast green (FG) and potassium periodate in hydrochloric acid medium, and that FG exhibits a sensitive single-sweep oscillopolarographic wave at -0.56 V (versus SCE) in the pH 3.9 of acetate buffer solution. The oscillopolarographic behavior has been investigated. A novel, highly sensitive, and selective catalytic reaction-oscillopolarographic method for Ru has been proposed according to the Ru(III) catalytic effect on the reaction. A detection limit of 0.27 ng/L and a calibration graph from 0.8 to 40 ng/L Ru were obtained by the fixed-time procedure. Ruthenium in an ore sample was determined by this method with excellent results.

Notes: We report a new technique for preparing tips for electrochemical scanning1 tunneling microscopy (ECSTM) with particular consideration of its simplicity and reproducibility. In preparing scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) tips by electrochemical etching, we chose an etching process with the formation of a neck-shaped part of an etched wire by applying a suitable etching voltage, and then we adopted a two-step etching process to prevent over etching. The prepared tip possessed a curvature of 100 to 300 nm, much smaller than that of the tip prepared by the conventional method. The etched tip was insulated with silicon rubber or epoxy resin under an optical microscope. This controllable technique allows that a reproducible tip with an exposed area of 0.44 to 7.76 μm2, which has proved to be available for in situ experiment, could be made.
