Notes: The density-of-states effective masses for the heavy-hole, light-hole, and split-off valence bands of GaAs have been calculated as a function of energy for each band. The calculations are based on a full k⋅p theory with the most recent values used for the matrix elements. Provision has been made for the effect of the split-off energy on the matrix elements of the split-off band. The results show important nonparabolicities which should be taken into account in modeling the valence band, and rational polynomial fits have been made for ease of computation.

Notes: The new powder diffractometer installed on the beamline B2 at HASYLAB/DESY is described. It features a new design with a blocked double circle plus a third single circle which can be translated towards one another. The wide space between the two circle units conveniently holds complicated and spacious attachments and makes the instrument especially suitable for measurements under controlled environment conditions.

Notes: Electron trapping by intense wave electric fields can alter the power deposition of electron-cyclotron waves in a tokamak when high-power sources are employed. The effect of wave trapping is examined in a ray-tracing study that utilizes plasma and wave parameters appropriate for the Microwave Tokamak Experiment (MTX) [National Technical Information Service Document No. DE-88016919 (1986)]. It is found that while wave trapping does result in some degradation in the rate of power deposition, single-pass power deposition is expected to remain significant in MTX. In examining current drive for MTX, the influence of electron trapping in the magnetic wells of the tokamak equilibrium field is included. Relativistic and magnetic trapping effects reduce the driven current by 25% to 50%. This initial study does not include the effects of gradients in the magnetic field and wave vector and therefore provides lower bounds for the power deposition and driven current.

Notes: The usual powder diffraction technique needs about one hour for the registration of a pattern with either a Guinier camera or a powder diffractometer. This is a long time compared to the time of most chemical reactions and phase transitions. Quite recently the recording time has been reduced by using position-sensitive detectors and rotating-anode X-ray sources, but the registration time is still about one minute. With a Guinier diffractometer in front of a synchrotron-radiation source a time resolution of 300 μs can be achieved.

Notes: This article is a further attempt to demonstrate the role played by warrior clubs as components of the Germanic social structure and in the formation of tribal units. Since this presentation is based on a hypothesis, it is necessary to explain the methodology and in particular the model employed.

Notes: Abstract The influence of corticosteroids on the fibrinolytic activity in different tissues of the eye was investigated. Rats were treated with corticosteroids, and the fibrinplate method of Todd (1962) was used to estimate the fibrinolytic activity. After 14 days treatment with corticosteroids the fibrinolytic activity decreased. In the control eyes no fibrinolytic activity was left after 6 h of autolysis. The eyes treated with corticosteroids, however, still had fibrinolytic activity.

Notes: Summary The case of an 18-year-old female patient suffering from a haemangiopericytoma with intracranial, and paranasal and intranasal extension is described. Before the diagnosis was fully established a partial tumour removal was performed by a nasal surgeon, because the nasal airways were obstructed. Later on, because of the risk of infection, a decision against radical operation was made. The patient was treated by radiation, but the tumour did not respond and she was transferred to the neurosurgical department where the haemangiopericytoma was completely removed. A pericranium-skull flap was used to close the basal defects of dura and skull. The advantage of this technique over other procedures is the safe closure of the intracranial cavity, thus permitting a radical removal of an intracranial-intranasal tumour in one operation.

Notes: Summary The effect of mode of delivery on the survival and morbidity of 24- to 32-week infants (500–1500 g) was studied in 262 consecutive deliveries. The study population was divided into high-risk (e.g., hypertension) and low-risk (e.g. incompetence of the cervix) groups by evaluation of risk factors. 194 very preterm newborn were classified as high risk and 68 as low risk. In both groups the perinatal outcome of vaginal delivery and cesarean section delivery was compared. Cesarean section was associated with a highly significantly improved survival rate in the high-risk group, but was not associated with differences in fetal outcome in the low-risk group. The results of this study do not support primary cesarean section as the method of delivery for all very preterm fetuses.
