Notes: Lateral inhomogeneities generate fluctuations in the traveltime of seismic waves. By evaluation of these traveltime fluctuations from different source and receiver positions, lateral inhomogeneities can be located using a pseudo inverse matrix method (Aki, Christoffersson and Husebye 1977). The formulation of the problem is possible for transmitted waves as well as for reflected and refracted waves. In reflection seismics this method is of importance, if no reflections from the inhomogeneities themselves, but only reflections from lower boundaries can be observed. The basic assumptions for the mathematical formulation are (1) the average velocities and depths of the reflecting horizons are known already from standard processing methods, and (2) the traveltime residuals are due to lateral velocity changes between different reflectors or between reflectors and the surface. The area of the earth to be considered is divided into layers and the layers into rectangular blocks. The parallel displacement of a ray after passing a disturbed block is neglected, only the traveltime residual is taken into account. In this paper the method and its application to data obtained with two-dimensional models are described.

Notes: Summary Anaesthesia in guinea pigs with a new highly potent and shortacting analgesic, carfentanyl (R 33799), combined with the hypnotic, etomidat (R 26490), is reported. Clinical observations as well as respiratory and circulatory variables have revealed this combination to be safe. Profound surgical anaesthesia has been obtained with good sedation, analgesia, and immobilisation. This method has been evaluated clinically and can be recommended with confidence in this species.

Notes: Abstract Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is a rare disease in pediatric patients. The case of a 14-year-old girl with generalized WG is described and the pediatric literature reviewed. Thirty additional cases of WG in childhood have been traced in previous studies. Diagnostic problems are discussed in the context of clinical, radiological and biopsy findings.

Notes: Conclusion The status of various results on the determination of the appropriate family of theoretical wave spectra to describe wind generated seas and the status of various wave forecasting methods have been reviewed. The spectra of Neumann appear to describe the sea more accurately than other theoretical spectra and the wave forecasting methods of Pierson, Neumann and James appear to be the most nearly correct for the widest variety of possible wave and weather situations.

Notes: Summary Computerized tomography of the posterior cranial fossa and the cerebellopontine angle facilitates the identification of lesions 1–1,5 cm in size using i.v. contrast material. After lumbar puncture and injection of 5–6 ml of air it is possible to detect tumors less than 1 cm in diameter and observe the nerves within the cerebellopontine angle cistern and internal auditory canal. The procedure causes only mild or moderate discomfort.

Notes: Summary A common observation during otologic surgery under general anesthesia, notably with nitrous oxide, is tympanic membrane graft displacement due to elevated intratympanic pressure. We mean that nitrous oxide increases the intratympanic pressure. We measured the intratympanic pressure changes with the Madsen impedance measuring instrument ZO 73. The results of the measurements of 84 ears are discussed and the tendencies of the connection between pressure in the middle ear and the size of the mastoid bone are shown.
