    Notes: A method for precise measurement of diffraction angles of single crystals using a Soller slit is described, which needs only a single diffracting position of the sample. The method can be applied to imperfect crystals, to samples with arbitrary shape as well as to measurements integrating over a larger area. The instrument and the measuring procedure are described. A survey of systematic errors is given and the errors that are specific for the method are briefly discussed. As an example, the results of measurements on silicon with a standard deviation of 3 p.p.m. are communicated.

    Notes: Abstract The interference electron microscopy was applied to investigate the mean inner potential of Bi spheres. With an electric biprism a system of equidistant and parallel interference lines was produced. The Bi spheres were evaporated on carbon foils in the electron microscope. From shift of the interference lines in the image plane the mean inner potential was calculated. The method allows to measure the mean inner potential at different temperatures. The results offer the possibility to measure the mean potential at the surface of an object.

    Notes: Summary Both auricles of 21 domestic rabbits were painted with dimethylbenz-anthracene (DMBA). Eleven animals of this group were additionally fed aromatic retinoid (AR) by an esophageal tube. Two control animals were not treated at all. Eight or 9 weeks after the beginning of the study six of the seven remaining animals, which had only been painted with DMBA, developed a total of 25 keratoacanthoma-like tumors (KA). On the other hand, none of the seven animals left, which were painted with DMBA and fed AR showed any tumor by this time. The systemic effect of AR was studied in biopsies from the snout and the back. The epidermis of the snout showed ‘mucous mataplasia’ by histochemical and electron-microscopic criteria, whereas the epidermis of the back was not significantly altered. The production of intra- and extracellular lamellated material indicated an additional effect of AR on epidermal lipid metabolism. The effect of AR in the prevention of DMBA-induced tumors was characterized by ‘mucoid cytolysis’ and karyolysis.

    Notes: Summary The effect of long-term ultraviolet irradiation on the connective tissue of the skin was investigated in 25 naked (Ng/-) mice which received a total daily radiant dose of 40±2 J/cm2 for a period of 8.5 months. The produced alterations were very similar to those found in actinic elastosis of humans, as assessed by histologic and electron-microscopic criteria.

Monooxygenase activities were measured in liver and skin, and an induction of the aryl-hydrocarbon hydroxylase was detected in liver by both fluorometric and radiochemical methods, whereas no induction of this enzyme could be demonstrated in the skin.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird berichtet über sonographische Routinekontrollen nach Nierentransplantation bei 72 Patienten. Die Kontrollen sollten in erster Linielokale Komplikationen im Operationsgebiet erfassen und diese gegebenenfalls von einer Abstoßungsreaktion bei nicht eindeutigen klinischen Befunden abgrenzen. Bei den 72 Patienten wurden insgesamt 295 Sonographien durchgeführt. Es fanden sich 22 lokale Komplikationen, von denen 15 im klinisch noch stummen Stadium sonographisch erfaßt wurden. Diese Patienten konnten dann frühzeitig einer chirurgischen bzw. urologischen Behandlung zugeführt werden. Aufgrund dieser Ergebnisse erscheint uns die routinemäßige sonographische Kontrolle des Nierentransplantates zur frühzeitigen Erfassung einer lokalen Komplikation im OP-Gebiet gerechtfertigt, während nuclearmedizinische Methoden bei der Frage nach vasculären Veränderungen und bei gestörter Transplantatfunktion eingesetzt werden sollten.
    Notes: Summary Routine follow-up examinations by ultrasonography after renal transplantation were performed in 72 patients from December 1978 until March 1980. The aim of these controls was to recognizelocal complications in the area of surgery in order to differentiate from a rejection reaction in patients with unclear clinical symptoms. 22 out of 72 patients had local complications. 15 out of those 22 were detected by ultrasound in a state without clinical symptoms, which then could be treated by surgical or urological intervention. We therefore believe that routine follow-up examinations after renal transplantation by ultrasound are indicated in order to recognize local complications. Nuclear procedures should be employed if alteration of blood flow or disturbed function of the transplanted kidney are considered.
