Notes: The carrier generated by a solid-state laser can be frequency shifted by a significant amount. This fact was exploited to implement a high-resolution optical-fiber fault locator. A resolution of 4 mm was achieved. Compared to the resolution of a frequency-domain reflectometer that shifts the frequency of the AM modulation of the light, the proposed fault locator has a resolution about 1000 times better. The potential of developing the proposed reflectometer into an ultrahigh-resolution integrated optics fault locator is also discussed. UFaipxr

Notes: For quantum systems in R3 defined by a Hamiltonian H given as the sum of the negative Laplacian perturbed by a real-valued potential v(x), the large time behavior of the fundamental solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation is investigated. For a suitably restricted class of potentials that have algebraic decay as ||x||→∞, the continuous spectrum portion of the fundamental solution is characterized by an asymptotic expansion as t→±∞, which is uniform in compact subsets of R3×R3. These results are then applied to derive the large energy asymptotic expansions of the spectral kernel associated with H.

Notes: Objective To assess whether colour Doppler sonography can replace pelvic arteriography in the assessment of patients with gestational trophoblastic disease.Design An observational study in which patients with gestational trophoblastic disease were assessed with both pelvic arteriography and colour Doppler sonography.Setting The oncology unit of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of Hong Kong. The unit is the main tertiary referral centre for treatment of trophoblastic diseases in Hong Kong.Subjects Thirty-two consecutive women referred over an 18 month period.Main outcome measures The site of localisation of the tumour and the size of the tumour as assessed by both methods. Results Eleven patients had a spontaneous fall of β-hCGtitres and did not have pelvic arteriograms performed. The remaining 21 patients had both investigations performed. Four patients had no evidence of abnormal pelvic vessels either on colour Doppler sonography or on pelvic arteriography. Their raised P hCG titres were due to metastatic disease elsewhere. In the remaining patients the location of the tumour vessels was found to be concordant between the two methods of imaging. Measurements of the mean diameter of tumour bulk by the two methods also agreed well (r = 0.93, P 〈 0–0001). Pelvic arteriogram over-estimated the size of the tumour in two patients by 2 and 3 cm, respectively, but this did not alter the risk categories of the patients. Conclusion Colour Doppler sonography is a noninvasive technique that can replace pelvic arteriography in the assessment of patients with trophoblastic diseases.

Notes: The relative contributions of CD5+ and CD5– B–cells in production of rheumatoid factors (RF) was evaluated in polyclonally activated B–cells from patients with IgA nephropathy (IgAN), rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and Graves’ disease (GD). In IgAN and RA, diseases in which RFs are believed to be involved in pathogenesis, there were 10– and 4–fold decreases respectively in CD5+ IgG–RF–secreting B–cells compared with controls. Furthermore, the number of CD5– IgG–RF– and IgA–RF–secreting B–cells were increased 12– and 14–fold in IgAN and 9– and 4–fold in RA. Such abnormalities were not apparent in GD, in which RFs have not been implicated in pathogenesis. These findings are compatible with the concept of CD5+ RF–secreting B–cells normally acting to prevent production of potentially pathogenic RFs by CD5– B–cells. When IgAN or RA patients’ B–cells were activated in the presence of control instead of autologous CD4+ cells, numbers of RF– secreting CD5– B–cells were reduced to the levels seen with control B–cells plus control T–helper cells. Presumably lymphokine secretion profiles of T–helper cells would be important in determining whether CD5+ or CD5– B–cells are activated to secrete RFs, and perhaps therapeutic manipulation of these profiles could restore normal activity of CD5+ B–cells in IgAN and RA.

Notes: The dendrites of ganglion cells in the mammalian retina become extensively remodelled during synapse formation in the inner plexiform layer. In particular, after birth in the cat, many short spiny protrusions are lost from the dendrites of ganglion cells during the time when ribbon, presumably bipolar, synapses appear in the inner plexiform layer and when conventional, presumed amacrine, synapses increase significantly in number. It has therefore been postulated that these transient spines may be the initial or preferred substrates for competitive interactions between amacrine or bipolar cell terminals that subsequently result in the formation of appropriate synapses onto the ganglion cells. If so, the majority of synapses made onto developing ganglion cells should be found on these dendritic spines. To test this hypothesis, we determined the synaptic connectivity of identified ganglion cells in the postnatal cat retina during the period of peak spine loss and synapse formation. The dendritic trees of ganglion cells were intracellularly filled with Lucifer yellow that was subsequently photo-oxidized into an electron-dense product suitable for electron microscopy. In serial reconstructions of the dendrites of a postnatal day 11 (P11) alpha ganglion cell and a P14 beta ganglion cell, conventional and ribbon synapses were found predominantly on dendritic shafts. Only three out of a total of 341 dendritic spines from the two cells received direct presynaptic input, all of which were conventional synapses. Thus, our observations suggest that the transient dendritic spines are not the preferred postsynaptic sites as previously suspected. However, it is possible that these structures play a different role in synaptogenesis, such as mediating interactions between retinal neurons that may lead to cell-cell recognition, a necessary step prior to synapse formation at the appropriate target sites (Cooper and Smith, Soc. Neurosci. Abstr., 14, 893, 1988).

Notes: Fresh cooked ginger and processed ginger products were extracted with methanol and analyzed by HPLC to study changes in the levels of [6]-, [8]-, and [10]-gingerols after the products had been cooked and processed, and during storage of the products. Sensory tests evaluated the intensity of pungency in different processed products. Cooking and processing of paste and scnbei decreased (p 〈inlineGraphic alt="leqslant R: less-than-or-eq, slant" extraInfo="nonStandardEntity" href="urn:x-wiley:00221147:JFDS1338:les" location="les.gif"/〉 0.05) gingerol levels, but blanching and freeze-drying had no effect. Gingerols in all products degraded gradually with storage. Ginger powder had a lower degradation rate than the paste stored at 4°C. Likewise, ginger senbei was more stable than ginger powder stored at room temperature (≅ 23°C).

Notes: Background : There is controversy as to whether Helicobacter pylori and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs interact to cause peptic ulcers.Aim : To study whether the eradication of H. pylori in patients on long-term non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug therapy prevents the development of ulcers. Methods : Patients infected with H. pylori whilst receiving long-term non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug therapy, but with no ulcers at baseline endoscopy, were randomized to receive either triple antibiotic therapy (metronidazole 300 mg, clarithromycin 250 mg and amoxicillin 500 mg, given four times daily; n = 70) or placebo (n = 70) for 2 weeks. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs were continued throughout the study period. Endoscopy was repeated 12 weeks after the end of treatment. The development of ulcers was compared between the two groups. Results : Endoscopy at 12 weeks revealed peptic ulcer development in five [7%; 95% confidence interval (CI), 2–16] of the patients who received triple therapy and in six (9%; 95% CI, 3–18) of those who received placebo (P = 1.00). No significant difference in the development of ulcers was found between patients with persistent H. pylori infection (7/80; 9%; 95% CI, 4–17) and those with the eradication of H. pylori (4/52; 8%; 95% CI, 2–19) (P = 1.00).Conclusions : The eradication of H. pylori in patients receiving long-term treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs did not prevent ulcer development. However, because the rate of ulcer development was low, a study with a larger sample size is required to confirm this finding.
