Notizen: Abstract This article reports the observation that there is a left/right asymmetry of the anterior columns of the fornix in the human brain. This asymmetry is present in the position of the two columns of the fornix in relation to the septum pellucidum. The left columna fornicis was found to be located caudal to the right, and this can be readily visualized on axial MRI scans. This difference was seen in most of the subjects, but in some subjects there was no left/right-difference and in a few the asymmetry was inverse. The asymmetry of the fornix with respect to the anterior-posterior axis was independent of the well-known dissimilar lateral ventricular volumes. However, the left/right difference in the position of the fornix was evident in subjects with or without differences in ventricular volumes. This suggests that the mechanism underlying the development of asymmetry of the fornix is independent of the mechanism leading to ventricular asymmetry. So far, no functional relevance has been ascribed to such differences in location. The finding is gaining interest in connection with recent reports of asymmetries in hippocampal subfields. Studies of fornical lesions should therefore give attention to possible side-to-side differences.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Summary Absence of the septum pellucidum is a rare developmental disorder of the human brain. Previous reports focused on the association with other cerebral anomalies. We present MRI scans showing an isolated absence of the septum pellucidum. The patient was suffering from a schizophrenic psychosis. Mental retardation or epileptic seizures, which are often found in more complex developmental brain disorders, were not observed. The septal area is part of the limbic system and aplasia of the septum pellucidum could indicate developmental anomalies of the limbic system. The concept of cerebral maldevelopment and the limbic system in schizophrenic psychosis is discussed.
Migrationsstörungen in limbischen Strukturen.

Notizen: Abstract To establish data about prevalence, number and topography of “unspecific” white matter lesions as seen on MRI, the T2-weighted MRI scans of 83 patients with hyperintense focal white matter changes were reviewed. Patients with known inflammatory central nervous system disease were excluded. There was an approximately linear increase in prevalence and number of lesions with age. Prevalence ranged from 18% in the third decade to over 90% in those over 70 years. We found a close correlation with concomitant periventricular hyperintensity. However, rating of Virchow-Robin spaces did not correlate with the number of white matter lesions. Both hemispheres were involved nearly equally with a minimal non-significant right side preponderance. Lesions showed a strong predilection for the frontal and parietal paraventricular “watershed” areas.

Notizen: Abstract Absence of the septum pellucidum in the human is a rare congenital anomaly. Previous reports suggest it is almost always associated with other brain anomalies. However, MRI in two patients with absence of the septum pellucidum presented here, indicates that this anomaly may occur without associated anomalies. It may be one manifestation of a spectrum of developmental anomalies. One patient presented with schizophrenic psychosis; developmental disturbances in limbic areas are believed to be associated with schizophrenia. Agenesis of the septum pellucidum may indicate abnormal development of limbic structures and it may be associated with anomalies, such as cytoarchitectural disturbances of cortical layers, as yet undetectable by MRI.

Notizen: Abstract The intracellular localisation of phytochrome in oat (Avena sativa L. cv. Garry Oat) coleoptiles was analysed by electron microscopy. Serial ultrathin sections of resin-embedded material were indirectly immunolabeled with polyclonal antibodies against phytochrome together with a gold-coupled second antibody. The limits of detectability of sequestered areas of phytochrome (SAPs) were analysed as a function of light pretreatments and amounts of the far-red absorbing form of phytochrome (Pfr) established. In 5-d-old dark-grownAvena coleoptiles SAPs were not detectable if less than 13 units of Pfr — compared with 100 units total phytochrome of 5-d-old dark-grown seedlings — were established by a red light pulse. In other sets of experiments, seedlings were preirradiated either with a non-saturating red light pulse to allow destruction to occur or with a saturating red followed by a far-red light pulse to induce first SAP formation and then its disaggregation. These preirradiations resulted in an increase of the limit of detectability of SAP formation after a second red light pulse to 38–41 and 19–23 units Pfr, respectively. We conclude that with respect to Pfr-induced SAP formation an adaptation process exists and that our data indicate that SAP formation is not a simple self-aggregation of newly formed Pfr.

Notizen: Summary Neurological manifestations were analysed in 13 patients with left atrial myxoma confirmed by histological study. In this group, 6 patients had neurological complaints at initial presentation, 5 had cardiac symptoms, and 4 patients presented with signs of systemic disease. CT was performed in 10 and MRI in 7 patients. There were signs of ischaemic or haemorrhagic infarction (6 of 12) and one lesion suggestive of myxoma metastasis; other findings mainly comprised non-specific white matter lesions revealed by MRI. Neurological follow-up 0.5–8 years after tumour resection revealed no delayed neurological complications, follow-up CT and MRI findings were not suggestive of lesions acquired after operation. It is suggested that this rare condition of cardiac myxoma should be suspected in young patients with CNS symptoms or signs lacking cerebrovascular or cardiovascular risk factors and should be included in the differential diagnosis of vasculitis. With timely diagnosis and resection of the cardiac tumour the long-term prognosis can be considered improved.

Notizen: Abstract The case of monocygotic twins discordant for a psychotic disorder is presented. An anomaly of the septum pellucidum, a so-called cavum veli interpositi was found in the psychotic twin while his brother showed no such anomaly. Previous studies have shown a higher prevalence of septum pellucidum anomalies in schizophrenic patients. Abnormalities of the septum pellucidum may be associated with disturbed neuronal development in distinct limbic brain areas which cannot yet be visualized yet by brain imaging techniques. The finding of the cavum veli interpositi in the psychotic twin could be incidental; however, it may indicate a dysgenic process in early brain development and, thus, play a significant role in the etiology of psychosis.
