Notes: Highly doped InP:Yb layers have been grown by adduct metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy at atmospheric pressure. Yb(MeCp)3, where Me=CH3 and Cp=n5-C5H5, was synthesized as Yb source material because of its relatively high vapor pressure at acceptable source temperatures. The layers were grown in a wide range of growth temperatures (560–670 °C) and Yb mole fractions (10−9–10−7). In photoluminescence experiments they showed strong Yb3+-4f emission. The layers were further characterized by Hall measurements and secondary-ion mass spectroscopy. In order to obtain n-type InP:Yb samples with high carrier concentrations we have grown InP layers double doped with S and Yb.

Notes: The deactivation of the acceptor indium after chemomechanical polishing of p-type silicon is shown to result from the formation of a complex involving the indium atom and a positively charged, extremely fast-diffusing defect X. In the temperature range from 220 to 280 K, the dissociation frequency ν of this complex and the diffusion coefficient D of the defect X are thermally activated and satisfy the expressions ν=ν0 exp(−Ed/kT) and D=D0 exp(−Ea/kT) with ν0=2.6×1012 s−1, Ed=0.690 eV, D0=5×104 cm2/s, and Ea=0.665 eV.

Description / Table of Contents: Contents The current/time and voltage/time functions are derived for the principal and auxiliary arms of a self-commutated inverter as well as for its commutating capacitor. This is done at the example of the directly commutated (parallel type) inverter. The results are given as formulac as well as in figures for the different in tervals during the commutating process. Formulac for the electrical design of the components of the commutating circuit are derived.

Notes: Summary Three hundred and ninety-two subjects from 89 German families were typed for restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) detected by the probes pmetH, pmetD, pJ3.11, KM19, and XV2c known to be tightly linked to the cystic fibrosis (CF) gene. The analysis of the predictive value of this typing in individual CF families indicates that the combined use of these probes provides a powerful diagnostic system for both carrier detection and prenatal diagnosis. In 45 families the complete haplotype including all RFLPs was available. Of them 41 (91.1%) were fully informative and 4 were partly informative.

Notes: Abstract The aim of this study was to assess (a) the incidence of perineal descent and (b) the relationship between radiological abnormalities of the pelvic floor and rectoanal manometric disturbances in patients consulting for constipation. Lateral radiographs in both the left lateral and supine positions studied pelvic floor descent. Results obtained in the 25 patients (mean age 47 years) studied were compared with those of 12 controls (mean age 58 years). Pelvic floor descent, never seen in controls, was demonstrated in 14 patients who were older (53±3 years, mean ±SD) than the 11 with a normal radiological examination (38±3 years,p〈0.05). Anal low pressures (3 cases) and a low amplitude of rectoanal inhibitory reflex (RAIR) (5 cases) were shown only in patients with perineal descent and anal high pressures only in those with normal radiology. Our results suggest that (a) perineal descent is a common finding in over 50% of constipated patients and (b) anorectal motility is related to pelvic floor function.

Notes: Abstract The effect of concentration on laser threshold is examined theoretically and experimentally for Rhodamin B and Rhodamin 6G. Laser action is obtained in the region from 1 · 10−6 mol to 2.5 · 10−1 mol. Lasing in organic dye solutions which are excited by a pulslaser is possible in a broad concentration range. For high concentrations laser action is limited by fluorescence quenching and increasing losses (diffraction, thermal effects, and bleaching). For low concentrations the limit is given by the losses of the used experimental set-up. In the present work the influence of the concentration on the exciting intensity at laserthreshold is examined for Rhodamin B and Rhodamin 6G solutions.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The inoculum densities (effective dose) ofErwinia carotovora sub sp.atroseptica (Eca) needed to initiate infection of tuber tissue before and after a 24 h wound-healing period, was determined using a vital stain. The effects of various treatments on the efficiency of the defence reaction associated with wound healing, and on rot initiation were manifested as changes in the effective dose. The defence reaction was inhibited by temperatures 〈10°C, reduced O2 levels ≤5%, and CO2 proportions ≥20% (Fig. 3a and 4a). Moisture loss in stored tubers increased their defence reaction compared to that of freshly harvested ones (Table 1). The effect of these factors on Eca development was identical to that which occurs in potato production where tuber wounds are generally contaminated with Eca. Rot initiation was best prevented by removal of water (Table 1), storage at 15°C, avoidance of reduced O2 levels 〈10% and CO2 accumulation (Fig. 3b and 4b).

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A cultivar collection was assessed for tuber resistance to the soft rot organism,Erwinia carotovora subsp.atroseptica (=Eca), and for the strength of the defence reaction associated with wound healing, by measuring the inoculum density needed to initiate infection (effective dose). Wound healing was more efficient in susceptible genotypes than in resistant ones (Fig. 1b), and resulted in changes of the ranking of cultivars, and a narrowing of the variation for soft rot resistance (Fig. 1a). No relationship was found between enzymic maceration of tissue and effective dose (Fig. 2a). The resistance ratings of cultivars were in general agreement with the effective dose and with symptom expression (Fig. 2b). Resistance behaviour was modified by growing conditions (harvest year) (Table 1), and cultivars need therefore to be assessed over several years.

Notes: Variants (G2, G5) resistant to the cancer chemotherapeutic drug methylglyoxal bis (guanylhydrazone) (MGBG) were isolated from adenovirus type 2 transformed rat brain cells (F4; Sircar et al., 1987). Although at least one of these variants continued to express the adenovirus Ela and Elb transforming proteins, they both exhibited a detransformed phenotype as witnessed by flat morphology, loss of anchorage independent growth, and tumor forming capacity. Reverse transformation suggested the possibility of changes in growth factor receptors and the production of transforming growth factors. To test this possibility, we investigated the status of epidermal growth factor receptors (EGF-r) and transforming growth factor alpha (TGF-α) production in F4, G2 and G5 cells. The level of 125I-labeled EGF binding to intact drug resistant cells increased by 2- to 3-fold compared to the transformed parental cell. Scatchard analysis suggests that increased binding was the result of increased receptor levels rather than altered affinity of receptor for ligand. The production of growth factors which compete with 125I-labeled EGF binding declined in the detransformed G2 and G5 cells to a level intermediate between transformed (F4) and normal cells (FR3T3). EGF-receptor increase and the complementary decrease in growth factor production in the drug resistant variants may be associated with detransformation.
