    Description / Table of Contents: Summary Also in Germany whole body plethysmography has been recognized to be the most reliable method of determining bronchial airway resistance and thoracic gas volume. A number of artefacts may falsely influence the airway resistance curve and the mouth pressure curve registered by anxy-recorder. The most important errors were described. Easily recognizable deviations are found as well as artefacts which could lead to misinterpretations, so that these should be especially carefully avoided.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die Ganzkörperplethysmographie hat sich auch in Deutschland als empfindlichste Methode zur Messung des Bronchialwiderstandes und des Thoraxgasvolumens durchgesetzt. Die auf einemxy-Schreiber registrierten Resistance- und Verschlußdruckkurven können durch eine Reihe von Artefakten verfälscht werden. Die wichtigsten Störungen wurden wiedergegeben. Leicht erkennbaren Verunstaltungen stchen solche Artefakte gegenüber, die zu Fehlbeurteilungen führen können und die deshalb besonders sorgfältig vermieden werden müssen.

    Notes: Photodetachment spectra of CH3NO2−⋅Arn clusters in the mid-IR are dominated by three strong resonances. These are assigned to autodetaching (AD) C–H stretching vibrational transitions in the valence (as opposed to dipole-bound) form of the molecular anion on the basis of a H/D isotopic substitution study and their solvation dependence. The AD resonances disappear promptly upon addition of the third argon atom, while the resonant structure appears in the action spectrum for formation of CH3NO2− photoproducts for n≥2. The strong argon solvation dependence of the photoproducts is traced to the rapidly changing endoergicity of the electron loss channel due to the differential solvation behavior of the valence anion relative to the neutral. We discuss a statistical limit for this competition, and introduce an intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution mediated AD mechanism unique to polyatomic anions. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract. Both under-yearling and post-yearling Atlantic salmon parr produced high agglutinating antibody titres in response to a single intraperitoneal injection of killed bacterial kidney disease (BKD) cells emulsified in. Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA), Low or no response was observed in animals injected with BKD cells in saline or in animals vaccinated by hyperosmotic immersion. Immunological duration was insufficient in fish vaccinated as under-yearling parr to provide protective immunity 2 years later when the fish had become smolts. Atlantic salmon post-yearling parr injected with BKD cells in FCA demonstrated a reduced prevalence of BKD lesions compared to control animals when both were observed as smolts 1 year after vaccination.

    Notes: The results of experimental and theoretical studies, aiming at a quantitative characterization of photoion-induced energy broadening effects in a laser photoelectron source, are reported. The electron source is based on two-step cw laser photoionization of potassium atoms in a collimated beam. In the experimental studies, the attachment spectra for the formation of (N2O)9O− cluster ions through a narrow vibrational Feshbach resonance (full width at half maximum 2.3 meV) were measured as a function of the photocurrent. The theoretical studies involved Monte Carlo simulations of the broadening effects and were based on potential distributions caused by realistic spatial distributions of the photoions. Using the corresponding electric field distribution, trajectories were calculated for a representative ensemble of electrons, and effective electron energy distributions were obtained from averages over the electron trajectories in the volume relevant for electron attachment. Furthermore, the effects of additional weak electric fields, applied along the atomic beam direction, have been simulated. For our geometry (ionization volume about 2 mm3) the effective space charge related energy width is found to be about 16 μeV/pA. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract A search for an abundant and economical source of isoflavones, particularly genistein, led to the discovery that the erythromycin-producing organism Saccharopolyspora erythraea also produces this promising new cancer-prevention agent. Erythromycin fermentation is a large-scale, soybean-based process used world-wide for the commercial production of this medically important antibiotic. Results from this study indicate that genistin (the glucoside form of genistein), which is added to the fermentation in the soybean media, was converted to genistein through the action of a β-glucosidase produced by the organism. Genistein was co-extracted with erythromycin from the fermentation broth, then separated from erythromycin during the second step of the purification process for the production of erythromycin.

    Notes: Abstract The study of metabolic fuel provision and its regulation has reached an exciting stage where specific molecular events can be correlated with parameters of the organism's ecology. This paper examines substrate supply pathways from storage sites to locomotory muscle mitochondria and discusses ecological implications of the limits for maximal flux through these pathways. The relative importance of the different oxidative fuels is shown to depend on aerobic capacity. Very aerobic, endurance-adapted animals such as long distance migrants favor the use of lipids and intramuscular fuels over carbohydrates and circulatory fuels. The hypothesis of functional co-adaptation between oxygen and metabolic fuel supply systems allows us to predict that the capacity of several biochemical processes should be scaled with maximal oxygen consumption. Key enzymes, transmembrane transporter proteins, glucose precursor supply and soluble fatty acid transport proteins must all be geared to support higher maximal glucose and fatty acid fluxes in aerobic than in sedentary species.

    Notes: Abstract Nucleotide sequences of the hemagglutinin (HA) gene of twelve influenza B strains and their deduced amino acid sequences were extracted from the GenBank and compared to those of early isolates. Separate analyses of nonsynonymous and synonymous substitutions for the HA1 and HA2 regions individually indicate that the percentage of nonsynonymous substitutions in the HA1 ranges from 44.4–56.0% but in the HA2 from 0.0–6.5%. The results suggest that positive selection as well as negative selection played a role in the evolution of the influenza B HA gene with the former acting on the HA1 and the latter on the HA2.

    Notes: Abstract A quantitative study of the life cycle ofSkrjabingylus nasicola was made. Before estimating the losses at each level of the cycle, we needed to know the location of the infectious larval stage in the paratenic host. We found that a significant number of L3 encapsulate in the anterior part of the paratenic host. The cephalic glandular zones, salivary and lacrymal glands, and maybe the musculature and connective tissues ofApodemus sp. andClethrionomys glareolus are preferred waiting regions. Of the 100 L1 placed in contact with the intermediate host,Agriolimax reticulatus, about 24 reach the infectious stage in the mollusc, and a little more than six become adults in the definitive host. These are relatively large losses, if one considers that the conditions of host-parasite encounter were optimal.

    Notes: Variants (G2, G5) resistant to the cancer chemotherapeutic drug methylglyoxal bis (guanylhydrazone) (MGBG) were isolated from adenovirus type 2 transformed rat brain cells (F4; Sircar et al., 1987). Although at least one of these variants continued to express the adenovirus Ela and Elb transforming proteins, they both exhibited a detransformed phenotype as witnessed by flat morphology, loss of anchorage independent growth, and tumor forming capacity. Reverse transformation suggested the possibility of changes in growth factor receptors and the production of transforming growth factors. To test this possibility, we investigated the status of epidermal growth factor receptors (EGF-r) and transforming growth factor alpha (TGF-α) production in F4, G2 and G5 cells. The level of 125I-labeled EGF binding to intact drug resistant cells increased by 2- to 3-fold compared to the transformed parental cell. Scatchard analysis suggests that increased binding was the result of increased receptor levels rather than altered affinity of receptor for ligand. The production of growth factors which compete with 125I-labeled EGF binding declined in the detransformed G2 and G5 cells to a level intermediate between transformed (F4) and normal cells (FR3T3). EGF-receptor increase and the complementary decrease in growth factor production in the drug resistant variants may be associated with detransformation.
