Notes: c-axis oriented, single-crystal, Co films were grown on mica using either Ti or Ru underlayers and exhibited the following crystallographic orientation relationship (00.1)mica (parallel) (00.1)underlayer (parallel) (00.1)Co, and [11.0]mica (parallel) [10.0]underlayer (parallel) [10.0]Co. Fundamental magnetic properties of the films were measured: Hc∼4 kA/m, Bs∼1.95 T, and Ku∼5×105 J/m3. The as-grown magnetization structure of thinner (t≤30 nm) films shows mainly 180° domain walls with a uniform distribution of crossties, while thicker (t=60 nm) samples show stripe domains with a width of 75 nm. In spite of their excellent c-axis orientation (FWHMCo(002)∼1.5°), the effective anisotropy of these films is in-plane but with a small perpendicular magnetization component. These features in the hysteresis behavior are consistent with a simple noninteracting particle model incorporating the shape anisotropy of the small sized grains. For thinner samples the validity of this model has been verified by annealing experiments.

Notes: Ferromagnetism at room temperature has been found in Mn/C/Si films prepared by sequential deposition of these elements at a substrate temperature about 360 °C by vacuum evaporation. The saturation magnetization increases rapidly with the carbon quantity, and it is about 250 emu/cc for a film with a nominal structure of Mn(6 nm)/C(0.5 nm)/Si(6 nm). The magnetization measurements at low temperatures show that the magnetic moment per ferromagnetic Mn atom corresponds to more than 1.2 Bohr magnetons. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Two strong peaks were observed in the electron energy loss spectra of polycrystalline AMoO3 (A=Sr and Ba) perovskites with metallic conductivities. One, observed at 1.7 eV, was attributed to plasmon loss originating from conduction electrons. This explains the reddish color observed. The other, located at ∼5 eV, was attributed to the charge transfer transition from the Mo4d–O2p bonding band to an unoccupied t2g band through photoemission, ultraviolet inverse photoemission, and x-ray absorption near edge structure spectra. No intense peaks were detected in the energy region between the two absorption bands (2.5〈hν〈3.5 ev), indicating the possibility of application in transparent conductors for the ultraviolet region. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A heavy ion source based on a new principle of direct plasma injection system was developed at Tokyo Institute of Technology. This heavy ion source combines directly a laser ion source and a radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) LINAC. We carried out an acceleration test of carbon ions on this source and proved this principle. An observed total carbon beam current of 8 mA at 214 keV/u was observed. Beam analysis using a bending magnet downstream of the RFQ LINAC showed that accelerated beam includes 4.0 and 0.8 mA C4+ and C3+, respectively. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A novel type of polarized 3He ion source based on "electron pumping" was recently proposed. This ion source requires multiple electron capture and stripping collisions of 3He+ ions with polarized alkali atoms under a strong magnetic field (2–3 T). Since these processes may induce a serious increase in the emittance and reduction of polarized beam intensity, we investigated them in detail by using the Monte Carlo simulation. It was found that there is (1) increase in the emittance results not from angular broadening but from a beam size enlargement, (2) the phenomena under magnetic field B are simplified by a collisionless phenomenon under a weaker magnetic field (effective magnetic field) Beff defined by Beff(similar, equals)(λ+0/(λ+0+λ0+))B, where λ+0 and λ0+ are mean free paths for 3He+ ions and 3He0 atoms traveling in the alkali vapor. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A compact storage ring has been developed for industrial research such as x-ray lithography and material analysis. This machine is of a racetrack type with two superconducting bending magnets and only two normal conducting quadrupole magnets. The circumference is as short as 9.2 m. One quadrupole magnet per cell contributes to making the smaller machine. The injector is a synchrotron, and a full energy injection of 600 MeV is performed. The bending magnets excite a field of 3.5 T, and are operated in a persistent current mode. A decrease in a coil current is ΔI/I〈3×10−3/year. The helium consumption is as low as 2 l/h for two magnets. An iron shield of the magnet decreases a leakage flux to a terrestrial level at a point 3 m from the magnet. A beam current of 380 mA has been stored with no beam instability in spite of there being no correction of the chromaticities. Beam emittances were obtained from measured beam sizes and were in good agreement with calculated values. The coupling coefficient εy/εx is calculated as around 0.04. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Pseudomorphic Ga1−xInxN/GaN single heterostructures in the composition range 0〈x〈0.2 have been investigated by photoreflectance and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Strong Franz–Keldysh oscillations near the band gap of the ternary film are observed and attributed to a large constant piezoelectric field of up to 0.63 MV/cm. This allows an accurate determination of the electric field. A significant redshift between the optical band gap from photoreflectance and the luminescence maximum is observed. Luminescence is proposed to originate in the indirect transitions between the electric field tilted band edges in GaInN. The presence of this field is expected to dominate the bandstructure and the recombination and transport processes in strained nitride structures. We find no evidence for large inhomogeneities or phase separation in this material. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A V3Si multifilamentary superconductor with high overall Jc has successfully been fabricated by a modified bronze process. A double-stacked Cu-8.5 at. %Si/Ta/(Cu-8.5 at. %Si/V) composite with fine V filaments (∼1 μm) was prepared, where the primary bundle is sheathed with a Ta diffusion barrier; thus only Si in the bronze inside of the Ta barrier is available for the subsequent diffusion reaction. The combination of adjusting the total proportion of V to Si in the composite to ∼3 and reducing V filaments to ∼1 μm allows the completion of reaction in short times to decompose the initially formed V5Si3 and produce mostly V3Si without grain growth. The overall Jc(4.2 K) values so far obtained are 1.3×109 A/m2 at 5 T and 1×108 A/m2 at 12.5 T, which are 10 times larger than conventional V3Si wires. These values are comparable to those of Nb3Sn multifilamentary wires produced by the bronze process for ac use.
