Notes: Objectives:  In 34 patients with chronic periodontitis, the presence of IgA, IgG, and IgG subclass serum antibodies against recombinant PrtC (rPrtC) of Porphyromonas gingivalis was assessed by immunoblot analysis 24 months after therapy. Methods:  rPrtC was produced from P. gingivalis ATTC 33277 using the plasmid pGEX-2T. In addition, intraoral colonization with P. gingivalis was detected by PCR in subgingival plaque and swab samples from buccal mucosae, tonsils and tongue at baseline, 10 d, and 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, and 24 months.Results:  All patients were found to harbor P. gingivalis in the oral cavity at least once during the observation period. The identified antibody responses against the rPrtC of P. gingivalis were IgA (97%, i.e. 33/34 patients) and IgG (100%, i.e. 34/34), with an IgG subclass distribution of IgG2 (65%, i.e. 22/34 patients) 〉 IgG3 (47%, i.e. 16/34) 〉 IgG1 (38%, i.e. 13/34) 〉 IgG4 (29%, i.e. 10/34). Anti-rPrtC IgA and IgG antibody reactivity was found in all but one patients (anti-rPrtC IgA negative), who tested negative for P. gingivalis at all of the assessed intraoral sites for at least 6 months before sera collection. There was no association between IgG subclass reactivity against the rPrtC of P. gingivalis and progression of periodontal attachment loss. Conclusion:  The results indicated that anti-rPrtC IgA and IgG antibodies may serve as an indicator for past or present intraoral colonization with P. gingivalis.

Notes: Summary Seborrhoea is one pathogenic factor for acne. Androgens induce sebum production, and excess androgen may provoke or aggravate acne. In women an androgen disorder is frequently suspected when acne is accompanied by hirsutism or menstrual irregularities. In men acne may be the only symptom of androgen excess. We report three male acne patients in whom hormonal screening revealed irregularities of androgen metabolism suggestive of late-onset congenital adrenal hyperplasia and who benefitted from low-dose glucocorticoids. Disorders of androgen metabolism may influence acne not only in women, but also in men, and these patients may benefit from low-dose glucocorticoid therapy.

Notes: Abstract: Large spin systems as given by magnetic macromolecules or two-dimensional spin arrays rule out an exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian. Nevertheless, it is possible to derive upper and lower bounds of the minimal energies, i.e. the smallest energies for a given total spin S. The energy bounds are derived under additional assumptions on the topology of the coupling between the spins. The upper bound follows from “n-cyclicity", which roughly means that the graph of interactions can be wrapped round a ring with n vertices. The lower bound improves earlier results and follows from “n-homogeneity", i.e. from the assumption that the set of spins can be decomposed into n subsets where the interactions inside and between spins of different subsets fulfill certain homogeneity conditions. Many Heisenberg spin systems comply with both concepts such that both bounds are available. By investigating small systems which can be numerically diagonalized we find that the upper bounds are considerably closer to the true minimal energies than the lower ones.

Notes: Summary Seventeen measuring parameters were used to characterize 197 mandibles (109 males, 88 females) taken from the corpses of people 20–80 years of age from the Rhine-Main-Neckar area. The representative measuring parameters and discriminating functions of intact lower jaws and lower jaw fragments of most frequent fracture types were determined in this practice group by means of discriminating analysis. In the present research material it was possible to determine sex accurately from an intact lower jaw bone in 82.6% (m) and 79.5% (f) of the cases. Furthermore, our results show clearly that sex may even be determined from lower jaw fragments. The classification was correct, depending on the type of fragment, in 72.5%–81.7% (m) and 71.6%–79.5% (f) of the cases.

Notes: Summary Whipple's disease is a curious disorder with the involvement of many organ systems, primarily gut, synovium and the central nervous system, characterized by the presence of numerous proliferating bacteria in tissue macrophages and other cell types. While clinically this disease entity has previously been defined by the classical triad of diarrhoea, malabsorption and weight loss, some patients do not show these features. In this report, a clinically unusual case of Whipple's disease is described presenting with high persistent fever, severe arthralgias and headaches, but without malabsorption, diarrhoea or weight loss. Nevertheless, the histological and electron microscopical pictures demonstrated the typical findings of intracellular micro-organisms along with the presence of bacteria in Schwann nerve cells, which has only once been described previously. Immunological findings before treatment demonstrated a decrease of T cells with the helper/inducer phenotype, and a concomitant rise in cells with the suppressor/cytotoxic phenotype, an elevation of “activated” Ia positive T cells and a significant reduction of T cell mitogenic responsiveness. Of special interest, after a successful treatment these immunological abnormalities shifted to normal with the exception of a still elevated number of Ia+ T cells. The discussion of this unusual case of Whipple's disease includes — besides possible cellular immunological abnormalities — genetic factors, especially since this patient was HLA-B-27-positive as was his son who is suffering from ankylosing spondylitis.

Notes: Summary The three-dimensional wind field of a small Alpine valley is analysed for two summer days. It is possible to evaluate the well-developed valley wind from measurements of the temperature in the valley atmosphere, the upslope wind from measurements of the temperature and the sensible heat flux in a satisfactory manner. Vertical profiles of the along-valley and across-valley wind components are given for a cross section of the valley at three positions for different times of day.

Notes: Summary The used hormone prednisolone bisuccinate causes in the concentration range of 2–1,000 µg/ml visible changes of the cell morphology and enzymatic activity in all leukocytes. These alterations appear immediately after the application of the glucocorticoid and remain nearly constant during the time of investigation (1 h). The changes in the cell morphology and the loss of enzymatic activity increase with enhanced hormone concentration. The following reproducible morphological changes caused by the hormone comprise swelling, vacuolization and deformation of the nuclei with concomitant release of nuclei material. In addition, cloverleaf and fircone-like structures originate in connection with the formation of small bubbles.
