Notes: Hydrogenated amorphous silicon solar cells were fabricated by photochemical vapor deposition. A three-separate-chamber system was newly developed to reduce the contamination of the dopant elements as well as oxygen or water originated by the loading and unloading procedure. Wide optical band-gap hydrogenated amorphous silicon carbide was prepared using acetylene (C2H2) for the p layer. The deposition conditions for each layer were optimized and the highest-energy conversion efficiency of 9.64% was obtained. This high conversion efficiency was mainly attributed to the large short-circuit current which indicated that the quality of the i layer is reasonably good.

Notes: Present works describe the developments the low cost R-Fe-B sintered permanent magnets. Three different didymiums are chosen for the low cost mixtures of rare-earth elements. The studied alloy compositions are Fe-(32.5–34.5)wt. %R-(1–1.6)wt. %B, where R elements are didymium (Nd-10wt. %Pr), 5Ce-didymium (Nd-15%Pr-5%Ce), and 40 Ce-didymium (Nd-10%Pr-40%Ce). The specimens were prepared by the conventional powder metallurgical techniques. The best magnetic properties obtained in this studies are Br=13.2 kG, iHc=10.2 kOe, and (BH)max=40 MGOe with the Fe-33.5% (5Ce-didymium)-1%B alloy. Temperature dependence of iHc of this alloy is almost comparable to that of the Nd-Fe-B alloys.

Notes: Fe-Cr-Co ductile alloys produce magnetic properties comparable to those of Alnico permanent magnets family, up to (BH)max=91.2 kJ/m3(11.4 MGOe). It is technologically known that the addition of Ti to the Fe-Cr-Co alloys extends the α-phase region of system and improves the magnetic properties. The purpose of this work is to study the effect of Ti on microstructures and magnetic properties of Fe-Cr-Co alloys. The microstructures of Fe-25 wt.% Cr-12 wt.% Co alloys with or without Ti melted in air or in vacuum, were studied by optical microscopy, electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The alloys without Ti exhibit the precipitates of Cr23C6 carbide and Cr2N nitride a along the grain boundary or inside grain. These carbides and nitrides form the Cr-depleted zone around them. However, the addition of Ti suppressed the formation of Cr-depleted zone, in forming the Ti(C,N), and the magnetic properties are improved.

Notes: The effective permeability ( μeff) of the ring Sendust alloys (Fe-9–10 wt. % Si-5–7 wt. %Al), molded with Epoxy resin, was measured in the temperature range of −10 to 70 °C. The μeff of the alloys in molded condition measured at 20 °C is smaller than that in unmolded condition. The high values of the μeff at 20 °C of the molded alloys were obtained from the alloys in which magnetostriction constants (λs) were close to zero. The temperature dependencies of the μeff for the studied alloys in the unmolded condition are very similar, but after molding they are classified into four variations depending on the value of λs. When the alloys have large positive or negative values of λs, the μeff increases or decreases monotonically with increasing temperatures, but for the alloy with λs (approximately-equal-to)0, the μeff temperature dependence is complex. These behaviors of the μeff with temperature are interpreted on the basis of the induced stress, initiating from the differences in thermal expansion between alloys and Epoxy resin. The μeff of the molded alloys was mainly dominated by the induced uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (Ku) by the tangential and axial compressive stresses in the molded ring alloys.

Notes: The impact fatigue crack growth characteristics of a low carbon steel and an aluminium alloy were studied. An impact fatigue testing machine of the Hopkinson bar type was used in these experiments to conduct a series of crack growth tests under simple impact stresses. The following characteristics of impact fatigue crack growth behaviour were revealed: (1) crack growth rate is higher in impact fatigue than in non-impact fatigue; (2) crack opening ratio in impact fatigue takes a higher value than in non-impact fatigue; (3) crack tip plastic zone size is smaller in impact fatigue than in non-impact fatigue.

Notes: Summary The prevention of cerebral vasospasm with OKY-046, an imidazole derivative and a thromboxane synthetase inhibitor, was studied co-operatively at ten neurosurgical services. Intravenous administrations of 2, 5 or 10 μ/kg/minute of OKY-046 were given continuously from the earliest possible day to the 14th SAH-day to 82 pateints with ruptured cerebral aneurysm. Sixty-eight patients (83%) showed moderate to high high-density (SAH) in their initial CTs. Angiographic vasospasms were seen in 58 patients, representing 71% of all cases or 81% of the 72 cases for which angiograms were available; the vasospasms of 45 patients (55 or 63%) were moderate to severe. Symptomatic vasospasm occurred, however, only in 27 patients (33%); in 18 of those cases, moreover, the symptoms were mild or transient. The conditions of the patients at one month after the SAH were classified into 9 grades from 0 (normal) to 8 (deceased). Fifty-two patients (63%) were classified as 0 or 1, and 64 (78%) as better than 3 (possible daily life unaided). The administration of OKY-046 was proven to decrease TXB2 in the blood. This paper emphasizes the effectiveness of the drug for symptomatic vasospasm, and supports our previous contention that cerebral microthrombosis may play an important role in the pathogenesis of cerebral vasospasm.

Notes: Abstract We have described the clinical and biochemical status of two patients with tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) deficiency due to impaired dihydrobiopterin biosynthesis. BH4 administration appeared to improve the mental and psychological status more than did neurotransmitter replacement therapy alone. This enhancement of activities of daily life was seen with a dose of BH4 as low as 1.25 mg kg−1 day−1. Granulocyte adherence capacity was below normal and recovered after BH4 therapy in both patients. B-cell differentiation capacity was altered either before or after therapy.

Notes: Summary Experimental hyperthyroidism induced in rats by daily injections of 3,3′,5,5′-tetraiode-l-thyroxine (0.5 mg/kg i.p.) for 14 days resulted in a significant increase in heart weight and heart weight/body weight ratio. Hemodynamic and morphological studies were performed in one group. Thyroxine-treated rats showed a characteristic cardiovascular hyperdynamic state, such as tachycardia and augmented rate of contraction, but no evidence of heart failure such as elevated end-diastolic pressures. The cardiac cells in hyperthyroid rats had a significantly larger diameter and more mitochondria than did those of the control rats. In another group the activities of cardiac enzymes involved in energy utilization and liberation were measured biochemically and compared with those of normal controls. Hyperthyroidism resulted in increased specific activity of cytochrome C oxidase and actomyosin ATPase in the myocardium. The specific activity of long-chain acyl-CoA synthetase, carnitine palmityltransferase, carnitine acetyltransferase, malate dehydrogenase and citrate synthase showed a moderate to marked increment, whereas the specific activity of lactate dehydrogenase and pyruvate kinase remained at the control values. These results suggest that in hyperthyroid rat hearts the functions of both energy liberation and utilization systems are enhanced to meet the added workload. Moreover, the increased activity of the enzymes participating in fatty acid metabolism suggest that in thyroxine-induced hypertrophic and hyperdynamic rat hearts, fatty acids contribute more to the energy supply than do carbohydrates.
