    Notes: Summary We removed the tracheas from sacrificed laboratory animals and subjected this tissue to multistep chemical processing. This method allowed us to preserve the cartilage and reduce its antigenicity, thus creating a bioprosthesis very similar to the host tissue. By using allogeneic and xenogeneic prostheses so prepared, no signs of immune rejections were seen following heterotopic or orthotopic implantations. The transplanted cartilage remained stable for periods ranging up to 21 weeks in recipient rats, while partial morphologic integrity of the cartilage was seen up to 1 year in pigs. Reepithelialization of the transplant with ciliated epithelium was completed in all specimens 12–24 weeks following surgery. Segmental replacement of up to one third of the whole trachea was possible in rats, whereas similar segmental replacements failed in pigs. We also found that successful reconstruction of window-shaped defects was possible. We consider our tracheal bioprosthesis to be superior to cialit-preserved grafts and also to most other biological reconstruction procedures.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Bei über 150 Patienten mit posttraumatischer Osteomyelitis bzw. septischen Lockerungen von Totalendoprothesen wurde zur Lokalbehandlung der Knocheninfektion ein Kollagen-Antibioticumverbund eingesetzt. Das Typ-I-Kollagen als Trägermaterial ist vollständig resorbierbar, die Freisetzung des Gentamicin erfolgt anfangs durch Diffusion, später durch geweblichen Abbau. Die Antibioticumkonzentrationen in der Drainageflüssigkeit zeigen ausreichende lokale Wirkspiegel bei extrem niedrigen Urin- und Serumkonzentrationen des Aminoglycosids. Bei 12monatiger Beobachtungsdauer beträgt die Rezidivquote weniger als 15%.
    Notes: Summary An antibiotic drug-delivery system based on collagen has been applied in more than 150 cases of post-traumatic osteomyelitis and septic loosening following total joint replacement. The type-1-collagen used as the carrier material is completely resorbed. The gentamycin is initially liberated by diffusion and later by degradation and tissue reaction. The levels of the antibiotic in the drainage fluid demonstrated effective local concentrations, with comparatively low concentrations of the aminoglycoside occurring in urine and serum. During an observation period of 12 months, the recurrence rate was below 15%.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Akute hämorrhagische Läsionen entwickeln sich innerhalb weniger Stunden und führen in Abhängigkeit vom Stressor bis zu gastrointestinalen Blutungen. In Experimenten an Ratten und Meerschweinchen wurden die Entstehung von Schleimhautläsionen und Veränderungen im Gewebshistaminstoffwechsel während Kälte- und Immobilisationsstress verfolgt. Die Entwicklung von Schleimhautläsionen war von einem Anstieg des Schleimhauthistamin- und Mastzellgehalts begleitet. Eine Vorbehandlung mit einer Kombination von H1- und HZ-Antagonisten reduzierte die Entstehung von hämorrhagischen Streßläsionen signifikant.
    Notes: Summary Acute haemorrhagic lesions develop in a few hours and, depending on the stressors involved, may lead to gastrointestinal bleeding. In experiments on rats and guinea-pigs, mucosal lesions and changes in tissue histamine metabolism were measured during cold and restraint stresses, and the influence of antihistaminic drugs was investigated. The development of mucosal lesions was accompanied by a parallel increase in the histamine and mast cell content of mucosal tissue. Pre-treatment with a combination of H1- and HZ-antagonists significantly reduced the development of haemorrhagic stress lesions.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Mit Hilfe der Autoradiographie (S35) wurde die Vitalität osteochondraler Transplantate nach Konservierung in verschiedenen Temperaturbereichen (- 20 °C, - 70 °C, - 196 °C) unter Anwendung von Gefrierschutzlösungen und unterschiedlichen Lagerungszeiten (bis 3 Monate) überprüft. Ungeachtet der Gefriertechnik sind alle kältekonservierten Transplantate avital, was durch die fehlende Aufnahme von S35 bewiesen wird. Dies scheint die hauptsächliche Ursache der arthrotischen Veränderungen von Transplantat und Wirtsgewebe zu sein, vor allen Dingen wie sie bei mittelfristigen und Langzeitbeobachtungen im Experiment gefunden werden.
    Notes: Summary The viability of osteochondral grafts following cryopreservation at various temperatures (− 20°, − 70°, − 196°), and by additional application of cryoprotectants, with duration of storage up to 3 months, was studied with the help of "S autoradiography. All cryopreserved grafts were proved to be nonvital, irrespective of the freezing technique used, by the failure to take up35S. Nonvitality of the grafts seems to be the basic reason for the osteoarthrosis of both graft and host tissue that is seen following midterm and long-term periods of observation in animal experiments.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Autoren haben am Göttinger Minipig (n = 42) End-zu-End Anastomosen des Ductus Choledochus in mikrochirurgischer Technik mit Vicryl und Nylon 30 mm proximal der Papilla Vateri durchgeführt. Die Nähte erfolgten allschichtig, mucös oder extramucös. Mikrochirurgisch durchgeführte einreihige Mucosa-Nähte mit 8/0 Vicryl zeigten die bei weitem besten Ergebnisse. Die hat sich als geringe Narbenbildung, vollständigere Schleimhautregeneration, sowie sehr geringes Vorkommen des Zeichens der Cholestase in der Leber manifestiert.
    Notes: Summary End-to-end anastomoses were formed with a microsurgical technique using 30-mm vicryl and nylon proximal to the duodenal papilla in the Göttingen minipig (n = 42). The monofilament sutures were mucosal, extramucosal and all layer. The authors found that the 8/0 vicryl monofilament mucosal suture made by the microsurgical technique provides the best results. They also found that mucosal regeneration was perfect and cholestasis in the liver was rare.
