Notes: Fe-Cr-Co magnets with radial anisotropy were developed by rotating samples in a magnetic aging furnace. The anisotropy is altered by the applied magnetic field strength. The Fe-25 wt. %Cr-12 wt. %Co-0.5 wt. %Ti alloy aged in a magnetic field of 100 Oe yields the magnetic properties of (BH)max=24 kJ m−3 (3 MGOe) and iHc=48 kA m−1 (600 Oe) parallel to radial direction, which are higher than those of (BH)max=7 kJ m−3 (0.9 MGOe), iHc=33 kA m−1, measured parallel to the circumferential direction. The increment of the applied magnetic field over 200 Oe alters the radial anisotropy into a circumferential one. Microstructural studies indicate that the iron-rich phase is elongated parallel to the direction of induced anisotropy. Computations of the magnetic flux distribution in disk samples confirm the experimental observations.

Notes: Present works describe the development of Fe-Cr-Co-Mo alloys with favorable {110}〈100〉 texture, which will lie along the transverse direction (TD) of the rolled strips. The studied alloy composition is Fe-30 wt. % Cr-15 wt. %Co-3 wt. % Mo-0.1 wt. % Mn-0.05 wt. % S. The magnetic properties of the alloys have been enhanced along the TD and the best magnetic properties obtained with TD alloys are Br=1.2 T (12.0 kG), iHc=82 kA m−1 (1025 Oe), and BHmax=56 kJ m−3 (7.0 MGOe). The favorable texture is developed by secondary recrystallization, caused by a mixture of rolling and annealing. It can be considered that the process adopted in this investigation is useful for mass production of Fe-Cr-Co alloys with high energy products, without forming a columnar structure or a single crystal.

Notes: The superconducting behavior of (Y1−xLax)Ba2Cu3Oy compounds for 0≤x≤1 was studied. It was found that Tc decreased with increasing La content. (Y1−xLax)Ba2Cu3Oy for 0≤x≤0.4, fired at 1050 °C in air, shows onset temperatures above 90 K. Annealing (Y1−xLax)Ba2Cu3Oy at 300 °C in O2 enhanced the onset temperature above 70 K for all studied compositions (x=0–1), and altered the crystal structure from tetragonal to orthorhombic.

Notes: Abstract A new-type redox battery has been developed. Some ruthenium complexes in organic electrolyte solution were utilized as the electrode active materials. A single cell consisting of [Ru(bpy)3]2+ complex in acetonitrile solution had an open circuit voltage of 2.6 V and a discharge current of 5 mA cm−2 (at a smooth carbon electrode). The characteristics of this type of cell were much influenced by such factors as the diaphragm material and the concentration of the complex. A cell with flowing electrolyte was also constructed and its charge-discharge performance was examined.

Notes: Abstract. Purpose: To determine the utility of high-resolution MR imaging for hepatocellular carcinoma. Materials and methods: High-resolution MR images with a 512 matrix in a right to left frequency encoding direction were obtained in 20 consecutive patients with known or suspected hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Six series of breath-hold images of the entire liver [T1- and T2-weighted fast spin echo sequences, T1-weighted fast low-angle shot gradient echo sequence and three-phased contrast-enhanced dynamic study using the latter) were obtained using a phased-array multicoil. Results: HCC was depicted in 15 patients on the MR images, and the diagnosis was confirmed at pathology in 13 and at imaging in the other two. In the remaining five patients, HCC was correctly ruled out with MR imaging. Conclusion: High-resolution MR imaging is a promising method in the evaluation of HCC.

Notes: Abstract. The computed tomographic (CT) and magnetic resonance appearance of pseudotumorous enlargement of the paracaval portion (PCP) of the caudate lobe of the liver are presented in two cirrhotic patients. The enlarged PCP was hyperattenuated on precontrast CT and hyperintense on T1-weighted images. The middle and right hepatic veins were displaced around the PCP. The presence of a portal vein branch penetrating the center of the enlarged PCP was important to distinguish it from other hepatic masses in the two patients.

Notes: Summary The CT findings in 5 patients with cerebral paragonimiasis in the chronic state are presented. The findings were: 1) multiple, densely calcified areas with a variety of round or nodular shapes in the brain, 2) a large low density area surrounding or connecting with the calcified areas, and 3) cortical atrophy and ventricular dilatation. The relation between the CT findings and the previously reported plain skull X-ray findings or neuropathological findings are discussed.

Notes: Summary. In order to examine whether the viral population is affected by intramucosal transmission, we analyzed the viral genotypes first detected in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) after intravaginal inoculation, before virus antibodies were detectable, and compared them with those in the inoculum. Three female cynomolgus macaques were inoculated intravaginally and a fourth was inoculated intravenously with polyclonal simian immunodeficiency viruses (SIVmac32H). The provirus genomes which first appeared in PBMC were sequenced in the V1 to V2 region of the SIV envelope gene. A comparison of the sequences obtained from each monkey revealed a homogeneous or heterogeneous viral population depending on the infection route. In the intravenously inoculated monkey, the viral population was heterogenous and was similar to that in the virus inoculum. On the other hand, in the intravaginally inoculated monkeys, single genotypes (in two monkeys) and one genotype with a slight variation (in one monkey) were found, but they were different from each other, having no characteristic sequences in the V1 to V2 region in common. None of the genotypes found in the PBMC were major genotypes in the virus inoculum. These results suggest that some selective mechanism, which differs among individuals, restricts the viral population during mucosal transmission.

Notes: Abstract Argon laser photocoagulation was placed on the confluent monolayer of cultured chick retinal pigment epithelial cells as a model of the regeneration process of retinal pigment epithelium after laser burn. The intense fibrillar net immunofluorescent pattern of fibronectin appeared on the burnt area from 2 h after the laser application, before the beginning of tissue reconstruction. Fibronectin was observed for several days, then became undetectable before the complete regeneration of retinal pigment epithelial cells. This indicates that fibronectin is involved in the early regeneration process of retinal pigment epithelium.
