Notes: From a combined theoretical and experimental study of 1,2,4,5-tetrachlorobenzene (TCB) we conclude that this crystal shows many interesting effects. In agreement with earlier optical measurements, which probe the complete vibron band structure of TCB, we calculate that several of the vibron modes have the dispersion of a one-dimensional crystal with stacks of molecules along the a axis. The inclusion of fractional atomic charges in the atom–atom potential used in the calculations is absolutely necessary to obtain the correct vibron bandwidths. Also the sign of the vibrational coupling matrix elements, which is given correctly by the calculations, is determined by these charges. For other properties, such as the crystal stability, the phonon frequencies, the site splitting in the vibron bands, and also the dispersion of the lower frequency vibrations, the interactions between the "one-dimensional'' stacks are essential, however. The calculations predict further, in qualitative agreement with the Raman spectra, that the splitting between the pairs of inequivalent vibron bands in α-TCB (the site splitting) is significantly larger than the factor group splitting in β-TCB. Finally we have found that, for those vibrations where the conditions are shown by the calculations to be favorable, the 35Cl/37Cl isotope effects are clearly visible in the Raman spectra.

Notes: The ferromagnetic anisotropy of resistivity Δρ/ρ0=(ρ(parallel)−ρ⊥)/ρ0 depends strongly on the nature of the dominant electron scattering centers, and is usually larger for impurity scattering than for phonon scattering. This explains why Δρ/ρ0 decreases with increasing temperature T in crystalline transition-metal alloys. Parker has proposed an expression for Δρ/ρ0 as a function of T, based on Matthiessen's rule. It contains the parameters (Δρ/ρ0)im and (Δρ/ρ0)ph, representing the Δρ/ρ0 values for impurity scattering and phonon scattering, respectively. In an alloy series with weak electron scattering, such as Fe-Co, (Δρ/ρ0)ph is found experimentally to be positive and equal to a fixed fraction (approximately-equal-to) (1)/(4) of (Δρ/ρ0)im. On the other hand, in crystalline alloy series with strong, resonant electron scattering, such as Ni-Fe, Fe-Cr, Fe-V, (Δρ/ρ0)ph is found to be negative and has a minimum at the composition where (Δρ/ρ0)im is maximum.

Notes: Summary As shown in preceding papers of the authors, the verification of anR-convergence order τ for sequences coupled by a system (1.1) of basic inequalities can be reduced to the positive solvability of system (3.3) of linear inequalities. Further, the bestR-order $$\bar \tau$$ implied by (1.1) is equal to the minimal spectral radius of certain matrices composed from the exponents occuring in (1.1). Now, these results are proven in a unified and essentially simpler way. Moreover, they are somewhat extended in order to facilitate applications to concrete methods.

Notes: Abstract The effect of an aldose reductase inhibitor, AL-1576, on the development of UV-B and X-ray-induced cataract was studied with 100 female Brown-Norway rats. Histological studies were made with 32 eyes. A new histological procedure enabled detailed information on UV or X-ray-induced impairment on the lens, as well as on the potential efficiency of anticatarct drugs. No definite effect of the aldose reductase inhibitor, AL-1576, on the development of UV or X-ray-induced cataract could be found. It may be concluded that AL-1576 cannot prevent damage caused by irradiation, like that of other oxidative influences. Disadvantageous effects of AL-1576 on the lens could be excluded.

Notes: Abstract As a basic step to quality assurance of INAA via shortlived isomeric transitions replicate analyses of NaCl are performed on an INAA facility specifically designed for this purpose and from the series of net peak areas of Na-24m (20 ms) and Cl-38m (715 ms) it can be shown that the system is quantitative and that its precision is determined by counting statistics. Future improvements of the method may be expected from gamma spectrometry systems with higher throughput and better resolution than that of the now used gated integrator. A resolution comparison between a gated integrator and the recently developed Preloaded Filter is given on the basis of the detector applied in this investigation and substantial improvements are examplified.
