Notes: Mutual diffusion in poly(ethylene oxide)/polymethyl methacrylate blends is investigated by using the photon correlation spectroscopic technique. The mutual diffusion coefficient and the static structural factor are measured as a function of concentration for various temperatures. The Onsager coefficient is obtained by simultaneous measurements of the diffusion coefficient and static structural factor. The result is employed to test theoretical predictions on the concentration dependence of the mutual diffusion coefficient of the polymer blend. The experiment results are found not in agreement with theoretical predictions.

Notes: Thin films of the high Tc superconducting Y-Ba-Cu metal oxide have been prepared for the first time by plasma-assisted organometallic chemical vapor deposition using β-diketonate chelates of Y, Ba, and Cu, Y(C11H19O2)3, Ba(C11H19O2)2, and Cu(C11H19O2)2 as starting materials, followed by post-annealing under a reduced pressure of oxygen stream. X-ray diffraction spectra indicate that the films deposited on the yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrate have a significant preferential orientation of the crystallite c axis being perpendicular to the substrate surface. Four-probe resistivity measurements reveal the temperature of the onset of superconductivity at 91.6 K and zero resistance by 78.5 K.

Notes: Synchrotron radiation can furnish Mössbauer radiation sources with higher brightness compared with conventional radioactive γ-ray sources when nuclear resonant Bragg scattering of synchrotron radiation is utilized. So far the observation of nuclear resonant Bragg scattering has been successfully carried out using single crystals containing 57Fe isotope at INP, HASYLAB, and BNL. We intend to use 57Fe/Fe multilayers instead of the crystals as a nuclear scatterer. In order to observe nuclear resonant scattering it is necessary to suppress Thomson electronic scattering which makes a huge background noise. In the case of the multilayer containing 57Fe and 56Fe only, nuclear resonant Bragg scattering can be observed in the absence of electronic Bragg scattering. Computation of the reflected intensities from a multilayer was made by the method analogous to that used in the design of a multilayer interference filter for a visible ray. Multilayers were fabricated by depositing alternate layers of 57Fe and 56Fe with designed layer thicknesses of 8 and 12 A(ring), respectively. As substrates, quartz glass plates and quartz crystal plates were used. The substrates were cooled by liquid nitrogen. The structure of the multilayer was characterized by Mössbauer γ-ray diffraction. The 14.4-keV γ-rays from 57Co source were used. A rocking curve has a peak, when measured under the resonance condition. The Bragg angle of the peak coincide well with that calculated from the designed spacings. From these facts it is concluded that the peak corresponds to nuclear resonant Bragg scattering.

Notes: Twelve biopsies of clinically normal oral mucosa taken from HIV seropositive patients have been investigated by means of light- and electron microscopy. Vascular abnormalities were found in all biopsies, regardless of the clinical stage of the HIV infection. In particular slit-like vascular channels, sparseness of intercellular junctions and swollen, protruded endothelial cells with an increased quantity of Weibel-Palade bodies were noticed. These findings were similar to those described in lesions of early stage Kaposi's sarcoma.

Notes: Oral hyperpigmentation has been observed in six HIV-infected patients, in two of whom systemic medication (ketokonazole, clofazimine) was supposed to be etiologically involved. Histologically, pigment was found in epithelial basal cells and particularly in subepithelial connective tissue. Ultrastructurally, the presence of premature melanosomes in subepithelial keratinocytes was of interest. Stimulation of melanocytes during HIV infection may occur in association with immunopathologic changes in the oral mucosa.

Notes: Summary Receptors of 12 lectins in 25 cases of human hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC) were histochemically investigated by avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex (ABC) methol. Liver tissues of five cirrhotic patients and five normal subjects were used as controls. SJA receptor was absent both in HCC and controls, while LCA and PSA receptors were present in all tissues studied here. Receptors of DBA, PHA, PNA, UEAI and SBA which did not bind to normal, cirrhotic and pericarcinomatous liver tissues had the positive rates of 4%, 44%, 16%, 4% and 12% in HCC, respectively. Four lectins which strongly bound to the non-cancer liver tissues had their receptors in 96% (ConA, WGA, RCAI) and 36% (BSAI) of HCC. The pretreatment of tissue sections with neuraminidase abolished most of WGA receptors and exposed some PNA binding sites. There were many differences in lectin distribution between HCC and noncancer liver tissues. The changes of glycoconjugates in HCC were discussed.

Notes: Abstract A variational alternating method which is suitable for analyzing finite three dimensional cracked solid is presented. The stress analysis of the unracked solid is performed by the functional variable displacement solution and the variational method. The stress intensity factor solution for an embedded elliptical crack and a surface flaw in a finite plate for the case of mode-I loading are obtained by the variational alternating method. The results are compared with that of reference.

Notes: The present study examined the effects of gonadotropins and ovarian steroids during in vitro meiotic maturation of rat oocytes on their ability to undergo in vitro fertilization. Fully grown oocytes were isolated from antral follicles of immature rats and cultured as oocyte-cumulus cell complexes (OCC) under conditions in which completion of meiotic maturation occurs spontaneously. They were then exposed to spermatozoa under conditions in which oocytes matured in vivo exhibit high fertilization rates. Compared with oocytes from pregnant mare's serum gonadotropin (PMSG) or follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)-treated rats, a simiiar proportion of the oocytes (〉80%) from untreated rats underwent germinal vesicle breakdown, but such oocytes had a lower rate of fertilization (70% vs. 20%). The presence of FSH during in vitro maturation restored the fertilization rate for oocytes from untreated rats, while a cytochrome P450 inhibitor, aminoglutethimide phosphate abolished this beneficial effect of FSH. The addition of progesterone during the in vitro maturation period duplicated the beneficial effect of FSH on fertilization rate of oocytes from untreated rats; oestradiol-17β was less effective in this regard, and 5α-dihydrotestosterone was ineffective. These findings indicate that FSH and progesterone, although having no apparent effect on nuclear maturation of the oocyte, play an important role during oocyte maturation in enabling normal fertilization to occur.
