Notizen: Defect levels in n-type Si Schottky barrier diodes made by resistive evaporation have been investigated by deep level transient spectroscopy. Three defect levels are observed at 0.16, 0.14, and 0.12 eV below the conduction band. The concentrations of the defect levels exponentially decrease into the substrate. The defects are introduced during etching process rather than evaporation process. The concentration of the defects increase with the thickness of the layer removed by etching before Schottky metal deposition, and decrease with the etching rate. This suggests that the defect levels are produced near the surface and are driven into the substrate during etching processes.

Notizen: Summary A 46-year-old woman presented acute sensori-motor neuropathy of the Guillain-Barré type, followed by a protracted course of profound autonomic and sensory dysfunction. Tests of autonomic functions showed denervation hypersensitivity. Neuropathologically, the trigeminal sensory nuclei, solitary nucleus, the dorsal columns of the spinal cord and dorsal spinal roots showed severe degeneration. Degeneration was found both in the preganglionic (intermediolateral cell columns of the spinal cord) and postganglionic (sympathetic ganglion and celiac ganglion) neurons of the sympathetic nervous system, and the preganglionic (dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus) and postganglionic (Auerbach's plexus) neurons of the parasympathetic nervous system.

Notizen: Summary The macular mottled mouse is a murine model of the kinky hair syndrome, characterized by a deficiency in copper transport. Cytochromec oxidase (CCO), a respiratory enzyme, is located in the inner mitochondrial membrane and consists of seven subunits, along with copper and iron. Biochemical and histochemical findings indicated that CCO activity was decreased in the cerebellum of the macular mottled mice but not in that of the controls. Immunocytochemical analysis, using anti-CCO and anti-complex III rabbit sera, revealed that CCO in the macular mottled mice was stained more weakly than that in the controls. Immuno-electron microscopic examination of CCO and complex III, using a method of gold labeling, was also performed. In the control mice, a high concentration of gold particles present over CCO and complex III could be seen in the inner mitochondrial membrane. The number of CCO-labeled gold particles was remarkably less, however, in the macular mottled mice, while no significant difference was found in the labeling of complex III between the two groups. It may concluded that the very low CCO enzyme content in the macular mottled mouse results not only from a copper transport disorder but also from a CCO protein synthesis disorder which impairs the localization of CCO protein in the cerebellum.

Notizen: Abstract We have observed the time-height variation of the temperature field in the upper troposphere using a Radio Acoustic Sounding System (RASS) which consists of the MU radar and a high-power acoustic transmitter. The fast beam steerability of the MU radar has made it possible to measure temperature profiles in a fairly wide height range in the upper troposphere (5–11 km), even under intense wind conditions. Observations were continued for about 32 hr on 24–26 December, 1986 with a time-height resolution of 30 min and 150 m. During the observation period, the tropospheric jet was so intense that the acoustic wavefronts were severely distorted. Using wind velocity profiles observed by the MU radar we have numerically estimated the propagation of acoustic wavefronts, and further determined favorable pointing directions for the MU radar to receive significant backscattering from refractive index fluctuations produced by the acoustic waves. Conventional radiosonde soundings were carried out every 6 hr, which showed a temperature decrease of 4 K/day in the upper troposphere during the observation period. Temperature profiles taken by RASS agree well with the radiosonde results.

Notizen: Summary The columnar arrangement of tooth pulp-driven (TPD) neurons in the first somatosensory cortex (SI) was studied by single unit analysis in the cat anesthetized with nitrous oxide and halo thane. Tactile sensitive neurons in the oral area of SI were arranged functionally in a columnar organization. About 32% of the recorded neurons also responded to tooth pulp stimulation. Thus, the TPD neurons located in area 3b seem to be multireceptive in sensory modality. About 80% of the TPD neurons were F-type which respond with a short latency to tooth pulp stimulation and receive input from a small number of teeth. When a microelectrode penetrated through a single vertical column, most of the F-type TPD neurons encountered received common input from one or two tooth pulps. However, when an electrode was inserted across more than one column, there was no common pulpal input to the TPD neurons encountered in a track. Thus, the TPD neurons in a single column had identical peripheral and pulpal receptive fields, and the same latency of responses to tooth pulp stimulation. These characteristics would support the hypothesis that TPD (presumed nociceptive) neurons are arranged in a vertical column and it may be inferred that the columnar organization of TPD neurons in SI plays an important role in the sensory-discriminative aspects of pulpal pain.

Notizen: Summary Monkeys were trained to perform a fixation task and a visual discrimination task. During the fixation task, one or two light bars were presented at different positions in the receptive fields of TE neurons. During the discrimination task, the animal was required to detect the positive stimulus when one or two of the paired small colored spots or two-dimensional patterns were presented. In both behavioral conditions, when the two light stimuli were presented simultaneously, almost none of the TE neurons showed an increase in responding over the single stimulus condition; the response was usually similar or less than the stronger response in the single stimulus condition. In the neurons that responded selectively to the discriminanda during the discrimination task, various interactions between the two antagonistic stimuli occurred depending on the location or the effectiveness of the two stimuli. These results may be related to gain control mechanisms in the wide receptive fields of TE neurons.

Thema: Chemie und Pharmazie , Medizin
Notizen: Summary The pharmacokinetics of the H2-receptor antagonist famotidine, after oral administration of a 20 mg tablet, has been studied in 10 elderly patients with normal renal function (CLCR≧59 ml·min−1, Mean=80 ml·min−1), 5 elderly patients with renal insufficiency (CLCR≦38 ml·min−1, Mean=15 ml·min−1), and 6 healthy young volunteers. Elimination half-life in the elderly patients with renal insufficiency was significantly prolonged compared to the elderly patients with normal renal function and the young volunteers. The correlation coefficient between creatinine clearance and the elimination rate constant of famotidine was 0.672. Mean urinary recovery of unchanged drug up to 24 h in the young volunteers was 44%. The mean renal clearance of famotidine in the young volunteers (270 ml·min−1) was substantially greater than the creatinine clearance, 128 ml·min−1, which suggests the possibility of tubular secretion of famotidine.

Notizen: Abstract Thermal shock fracture behaviour of alumina, mullite, silicon carbide, silicon nitride and various kinds of zirconia based ceramics, such as magnesia partially stabilized zirconia (Mg-PSZ), yttria and ceria doped tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Y-TZP and Ce-TZP), Y-TZP/Al2O3 composites and yttria doped cubic stabilized zirconia (Y-CSZ), was evaluated by the quenching method using water, methyl alcohol and glycerin as quenching media. Thermal shock fracture of all materials seemed to proceed by the thermal stress due to convective heat transfer accompanied by boiling of the solvents under the present experimental conditions. Thermal shock resistance of zirconia based ceramics increased with increasing the fracture strength, but that of Y-TZP and Y-TZP/Al2O3 composites was anormalously lower than the predicted value.
