Notes: The behavior of finite-pressure-induced magnetic islands is numerically analyzed for three-dimensional magnetohydrostatic equilibria of the Helias configuration by using a three- dimensional equilibrium code. It is found that an island chain is generated on the 5/6 rational surface, when such a surface appears in the plasma region of the finite-β equilibrium. The island chain, however, is not so dangerous as to destroy the plasma confinement even if it appears in a vanishingly small shear region. Thus, a high β equilibrium with clear magnetic surfaces can be realized. Moreover, it is definitely confirmed that the finite pressure effect sometimes exhibits an unexpectedly good aspect, namely, that the vacuum islands are removed as β increases, which can be called ‘self-healing' of islands. This property can be explained by the numerically discovered fact that the phases of islands induced by the finite-pressure effect are always locked in the same phase regardless of β.

Notes: Various types of planar inductors have been proposed for reducing the volume of switching converters. Planar inductors using amorphous alloy ribbons as magnetic layers are also studied. The purpose of this study is to clarify the relation between the electrical performance of the inductor, and the properties and composition of amorphous ribbon. The experimental results show that superimposed dc current, I80, increases linearly with the product of Bm and ribbon thickness t, where I80 is defined as the dc current corresponding to an inductance which decreases to 80% of an initial value. In the case of stacking amorphous alloy ribbons, I80 increases with gradual approach to saturation, as the stack thickness increases regardless of ribbon thickness. However, the saturation value of I80 depends on ribbon thickness. The saturation value increases with increasing ribbon thickness. The above results suggest that from a practical viewpoint the use of thick ribbons is preferable. With respect to alloy composition, the Fe-based alloy is more favorable compared with the Co-based alloy because of its higher stored magnetic energy.

Notes: The amplification characteristics of a Cherenkov laser loaded with a Kerr-like medium are investigated on the basis of the fluid model for an electron beam. The numerical simulation with the aid of the finite element method shows that the amplification characteristics are greatly improved by the proper choice of the nonlinear parameter for a Kerr-like medium. The enhanced characteristics are due to the improved velocity matching between the electron beam and the electromagnetic wave, and to the self-focusing effect of a Kerr-like medium.

Notes: High-quality Bi2Sr2CaCu2Ox/Ag superconducting tapes were fabricated directly from the nitrate salts of Bi, Sr, Ca, and Cu by the partial-melt-growth technique. Nitrate particles were deposited electrostatically on the Ag substrate and heat treated. After process optimization of the superconducting tapes, the best samples showed typical Tc of 89 K with zero applied field critical current density of 2×104 A/cm2 (Ic=11.2 A) at 77 K and 2.6×105 A/cm2 (Ic=190 A) at 4.2 K. Unlike films grown using solid state reacted precursor powders, these films lacked the typical Bi-free, needlelike defects and possessed a smooth morphology. X-ray diffraction patterns showed the film to be highly c-axis oriented. The processing of these tapes significantly reduces the overall fabrication time from precursor materials preparation to final heat treatment.

Notes: Scanning tunneling microscopy has been applied to observe hydrogen-terminated Si(111) surfaces at room temperature. A clear image was easily observed for a Si surface prepared by rinsing in pure water with very low dissolved oxygen after removal of native oxide by 1% HF solution dipping. A smooth surface in an atomic scale was exhibited in a 50×50 nm area. Completely triangular-shaped holes were observed on the surface. The holes were surrounded by steps which were very likely directed toward 〈112¯〉. The treatment of the surface was remarkably stable even after a 3 h air exposure. Furthermore, nm size pits were found at the bottom part of the triangular-shaped holes. The results imply that the nm size pits appeared to be due to microdefects and that the pits might be the origin of surface etching at the Si surface.

Notes: Numerical simulations on the thermal convection of a neutral fluid (without a magnetic field) in a rotating spherical shell have been carried out. The results indicate that sufficiently rapid rotation results in strong differential rotation, with a pronounced equatorial acceleration. The formation dynamics of convection columns aligned to the rotation axis is studied extensively. A new generation mechanism of differential rotation is then proposed which concludes that the fluid motion generates an equatorial acceleration by selectively exciting the cyclonic columns in the spherical shell.

Notes: Finite element modelling has been used to make a quantitative investigation of local factors affecting the measurement of tidal strain at the Esashi earth tide station. Factors investigated, with the approximate magnitude of the perturbation produced by each, are topography (12 per cent), regional geology (1 per cent), inhomogeneity of the elastic properties of the granodiorite from which the strainmeter tunnels were excavated (3 per cent), and the cavity effect (2 per cent). Correction for these factors reduces the average discrepancy between the observed strains (observational accuracy ~1 per cent) and those predicted from the solid earth and ocean loading tide from 23 to 8 per cent. After such correction the ratios of observed to modelled amplitudes of the O1 and M2 tides on each strainmeter are in fair agreement, but these ratios differ from strainmeter to strainmeter; they are about 7 per cent too large on the N-S and NE-SW strainmeters and 9 per cent too small on the E-W instrument. These studies illustrate the difficulties involved in relating strains measured in an observatory such as Esashi to those representative of the surrounding region and suggest that, with the level of detail and sophistication used, this relationship cannot be modelled to much better than 10 per cent. Systematic differences between results from the mid-point and free-end strainmeters imply that the effects of small-scale rock inhomogeneities have not been modelled correctly.
