Notes: Finite element modelling has been used to make a quantitative investigation of local factors affecting the measurement of tidal strain at the Esashi earth tide station. Factors investigated, with the approximate magnitude of the perturbation produced by each, are topography (12 per cent), regional geology (1 per cent), inhomogeneity of the elastic properties of the granodiorite from which the strainmeter tunnels were excavated (3 per cent), and the cavity effect (2 per cent). Correction for these factors reduces the average discrepancy between the observed strains (observational accuracy ~1 per cent) and those predicted from the solid earth and ocean loading tide from 23 to 8 per cent. After such correction the ratios of observed to modelled amplitudes of the O1 and M2 tides on each strainmeter are in fair agreement, but these ratios differ from strainmeter to strainmeter; they are about 7 per cent too large on the N-S and NE-SW strainmeters and 9 per cent too small on the E-W instrument. These studies illustrate the difficulties involved in relating strains measured in an observatory such as Esashi to those representative of the surrounding region and suggest that, with the level of detail and sophistication used, this relationship cannot be modelled to much better than 10 per cent. Systematic differences between results from the mid-point and free-end strainmeters imply that the effects of small-scale rock inhomogeneities have not been modelled correctly.

Notes: Lunar synchronization of spawning was investigated for eight substrate brooding cichlid fishes belonging to the tribe Lamprologini. Their spawning activities all peaked during the second quarter of the lunar cycle. Comparison between their breeding styles and the degrees of spawning synchronization suggested that the nocturnal guarding-efficiency of eggs, especially exposed ones, is improved by the maximal amount of moonlight during full moon and, in species whose young leave the breeding sites about 2 weeks after spawning, the survival of dispersing young is enhanced by the darkness of moonless nights.

Notes: Summary To determine whether a mitochondrial mRNA deficiency exists in mitochondrial myopathies, muscle biopsies from a patient with chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia (CPEO) and a patient with mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) were studied using in situ hybridization. Histochemistry and immunohistochemistry were performed along with hybridization. Hybridization reactions were widely distributed over the sarcoplasm of all muscle fibers in the patient with MELAS. In the patient with CPEO, 80% of the fibers showed a marked decrease in density of autoradiographic grains. This marked decrease corresponded to the histochemical and immunohistochemical findings of a very weak staining of cytochromec oxidase (CCO). The isotope-labeled cDNA probe used in in situ hybridization in this study complements a part of subunit I of CCO and a part of subunit II of complex I in the mitochondrial gene. Our results suggest a defect in the mRNA in this CPEO patient.

Notes: Abstract Well-crystallized ultrafine ZnFe2O4 particles of several nanometers in size have been prepared by the coprecipitation method, and their particle morphology and magnetic properties, especially at low temperatures, examined. Room-temperature X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, magnetization measurements at various temperatures from 300 K to 4.2 K, and Mössbauer spectroscopy at various temperatures from 300 K to 4.2 K, and at 4.2 K with a longitudinal magnetic field of 16.4 kOe applied have been employed. The formation of short-range and long-range magnetic order in small ZnFe2O4 particles above and below approximately 30 K is discussed. Below 30 K, the appearance of spontaneous magnetization and its hysteretic property is confirmed for small ZnFe2O4 particles.

Notes: Summary The effect of haemodialysis on the pharmacokinetics of oral famotidine has been studied in five elderly anuric patients. Famotidine 20 mg was administered in a cross-over design to patients on and not on haemodialysis. The elimination rate constant of haemodialysis (k) was 4.6-fold larger than the systemic elimination rate constant (ke). Although the mean maximum serum concentration of famotidine during haemodialysis (141.5 ng·ml−1) was not significantly lower than that without haemodialysis (195.6 ng·ml−1), the AUC up to 5 h during haemodialysis was significantly decreased to 58.1% of the value without it. The data suggest that famotidine is dialysable by haemodialysis.

Notes: Abstract Magnetic properties of compacted cores which are formed from amorphous alloy powders prepared by a rapid quenching water atomization process are studied. The coercivity of the as-compacted core was estimated to beH c=0.028(λσ/I s)+1200 with the idea that the coercive force depends on the magnitude of the stress variation. The a.c. magnetic properties are remarkably improved by use of the coupling agent and zinc stearate. The use of the amorphous powder core for choke coils of switching power supplies leads to the decrease of cut-off current, that is, an improvement in the efficiency of power supplies.

Notes: Abstract Emission Mössbauer spectra of mixedvalence trinuclear complexes,57Co-labelled [CoFe2O(CH3CO2)6(H2O)3] and [CoFe2O(CH3CO2)6 (py)3]py were compared with that of [CoCr2O(CH3CO2)6 (py)3]py. It was found that the57Fe atoms produced in57Co-labelled [CoFe2O(CH3CO2)6(H2O)3] and [CoFe2O(CH3CO2)6 (py)3]py showed a temperature-dependent mixed-valence state as observed in the absorption Mössbauer spectra of [Fe3O(CH3CO2)6 (H2O)3] and [Fe3O(CH3CO2)6 (py)3]py, respectively, while57Co-labelled [CoCr2O(CH3CO2)6 (py)3]py showed a temperature-independent divalent iron/II/ state. The results indicate that the decayed atoms keep their position at the sites of original57Co atoms and that the valence electrons are transferred through the intramolcular bondings.

Notes: Abstract Distribution coefficients of fission products in nitric acid for strongly acidic cation exchanger of sulfonic acid type with different cross-linking and structure were measured by a column method. Uptake of cationic fission products increases with resin cross-linking and decreases of nitric acid concentration. The distribution coefficient of the ion, [KdMn+]*, in a given system is expressed as log [KdMn+]*=B·log[KdMn+]+A where [KdMn+] is the distribution coefficient of the ion at 1M nitric acid for 10% crosslinked gel type cation exchanger, while A and B constants. Deviation from the above relation were observed for Y3+ and complex ions of ruthenium upward for macroporous type cation exchanger and downward for highly porous type cation exchanger. Upward deviation of Y3+ for 10% cross-linked gel type cation exchanger increased with concentration of nitric acid. Consequently, elution sequence varied from Y3+−Eu3+−Pm3+−Ce3++ at 1M nitric acid to Eu3+−Pm3+−Y3+−Ce3+ for the same cation exchanger at 2M nitric acid. The same elution sequence, Eu3+−Pm3+−Y3+−Ce3+, was observed for 8% cross-linked gel type cation exchanger and 10% cross-linking macroporous type cation exchanger at 1M nitric acid.
