Notes: Vortex core dynamics is studied in the Brusselator both near to and far from the Hopf bifurcation line for random and pair initial conditions. Extensive simulations are carried out for a pair of counter-rotating vortices close to the Hopf bifurcation line. Provided the vortices are not so far apart that wave-front annihilation produces strong gradients between their centers, the simulation results compare favorably with theories based on the complex Ginzburg–Landau equation. Far from the Hopf line the vortex core dynamics changes character and phenomena such as periodic motion of the vortex centers arise.

Notes: CdTe epitaxial films were grown by a simple method of temperature gradient vapor transport deposition on p-InSb (111) orientation substrates in the growth temperature range between 200 and 280 °C. Raman spectroscopy showed the optical phonon modes of the CdTe thin films and the formation of an indium telluride interfacial layer in the CdTe/InSb heterostructures. The stoichiometry of the CdTe/InSb heterostructures was observed by the Auger electron spectroscopy, and Auger depth profiles also demonstrated that the CdTe/InSb heterointerface was not abrupt. The results indicated that the films grown at about 265 °C posed a significant problem due to interdiffusion from the InSb substrates during the growth.

Notes: Abstract The ViaB region required for Vi antigen production in Salmonella typhi was cloned. The plasmid pGBM124 containing a 14-kb S. thypi chromosomal DNA fragment conferred the ability to produce Vi antigen on Escherichia coli HB101 and ViaB-deleted S. typhi GIFU10007-3. Tn5 insertion analysis showed that the 14-kb DNA was split into three regions. Region 1 and region 2 are involved in the biosynthesis of Vi polysaccharide. Region 3 is involved in translocation of the Vi polysaccharide to the cell surface. Southern blot hybridization showed that regions 2 and 3 but not region 1, were considerably homologous to the DNA of Vi-positive Citrobacter freundii.

Notes: Abstract Kidney vetch seedlings were induced to form hairy roots by inoculating their mesocotyls with the wild-type strain 15834 of Agrobacterium rhizogenes or with the A. tumefaciens strain C58C1 containing a binary vector system (the pRiA4b as a helper and the vector pCB1346 bearing a pTiC58-derived isopentenyl transferase gene (ipt, cytokinin biosynthetic gene) under control of its native regulatory sequences). Transgenic lines of three distinct phenotypes were selected: (i) Typically, the pRi15834-transformed tissues were stabilized in vitro and maintained for long periods as aseptic, fast-growing, hormone-independent, plagiotropic hairy root cultures which never regenerated shoots and lost the ability to synthesize opines. Their genomic DNA contained both the TL- and the TR-DNA. (ii) One of the HR-lines transgenic for the T-DNA of pRi15834 (named 52AV34) started to regenerate spontaneously into teratomous shoots. The shoots were found to produce opines and both the TL and TR parts of T-DNA were found to be partly deleted and/or rearranged. They contained phytohormones in similar levels as those found in seed-born shoots. (iii) A practically identical morphogenic response as in the line 52AV34 was observed in the clone 27AV46. However, its shooty, dark-green, slow-growing teratomas were proven to be kanamycin-resistant, opine-producing, and double-transformed by the pRiA4b sequences and the ipt gene. They over-produced auxins as well as cytokinins (mainly indoleacetylaspartic acid and ribosides of zeatin and isopentenyladenine).

Notes: Summary The kinetics of a single oral dose of mefloquine given either alone or with ampicillin has been studied in 8 healthy Thai male volunteers. There was a significantly higher maximum whole blood mefloquine concentration after coadministration with ampicillin (1648 vs 1228 ng·ml−1), as well as a significantly reduced terminal half life (15.3 vs 17.7 days), mean residence time (20.1 vs 23.4 days) and volume of distribution at steady state (14.1 vs 19.4 l·kg−1). Although there was no significant change in the AUC from zero time to infinity, the AUC from zero time to 5 days was significantly increased by ampicillin (4.86 vs 3.27 μg·ml−1 day). These changes in mefloquine disposition after antibiotic treatment may be due both to an increase in fractional bioavailability and a reduction in the enterohepatic recycling of mefloquine.

Notes: Summary The kinetics of a single oral dose of mefloquine given either alone or with tetracycline has been studied in 20 healthy Thai male volunteers. There was a significantly higher maximum whole blood mefloquine concentration after coadministration with tetracycline (1600 vs 1160 ng · ml−1), as well as a significantly reduced terminal half-life (14.4 vs 19.3 days), mean residence time (11.9 vs 16.0 days) and volume of distribution at steady state (13.3 vs 19.91 · kg−1). Although there was no significant change in the AUC from zero time to infinity, the AUC from zero time to 7 days was significantly increased by tetracycline (6.18 vs 4.76 μg · ml−1 · day). The changes in mefloquine disposition after tetracycline treatment are probably due to a reduction in enterohepatic recycling. The initial increase in mefloquine AUC without an apparent increase in side-effects suggests that this combination may have a place in the treatment of multi-drug resistant falciparum malaria.

Notes: Abstract Hydrodynamically developing flow of Oldroyd B fluid in the planar die entrance region has been investigated numerically using SIMPLER algorithm in a non-uniform staggered grid system. It has been shown that for constant values of the Reynolds number, the entrance length increases as the Weissenberg number increases. For small Reynolds number flows the center line velocity distribution exhibit overshoot near the inlet, which seems to be related to the occurrence of numerical breakdown at small values of the limiting Weissenberg number than those for large Reynolds number flows. The distributions of the first normal stress difference display clearly the development of the flow characteristics from extensional flow to shear flow.
