    Notes: We report on an experimental geometry for studying dynamical resonances in bimolecular collisions. The method is sensitive to atom–diatom reactions at low angular momentum and low impact parameter corresponding to the collinear coordinate. State-selected reaction probabilities for H+2+He→HeH++H were measured at c.m. scattering angles θ=0° and 180°; the collision energy was scanned from 0.35–1.90 eV.

    Notes: The endoergic reaction He+H+2→HeH++H is investigated in a molecular-beam experiment as a function of H+2 vibrational energy at c.m. collision energies between 0.3 and 1.9 eV. Reactant ions generated by resonantly enhanced four-photon ionization are impulsively accelerated to collide with a beam of He. Time-of-flight velocity distributions of HeH+, measured at one laboratory angle, yield the differential cross section at c.m. angles θ=0° and 180°. A shift from "He rebound'' to "H+ stripping'' behavior accompanies the enhancement in the cross section as the H+2 vibrational energy increases, which matches previous studies at higher collision energy. Small-impact-parameter events produce HeH+ with less recoil velocity (more internal energy) than those at large impact parameters. Within the limits of sensitivity and resolution (ΔE≈0.15 eV), definitive resonance features in the collision energy dependence of dσ/dω are not evident. Improvements in the technique to enable such observations are suggested.

    Notes: Cross sections for the reaction H+2+H2→H+3+H, differential in scattering angle and recoil energy, are measured in a molecular-beam experiment at c.m. collision energies of 1.5, 2.3, 3.5, and 5.3 eV. Resonantly enhanced four-photon ionization prepares H+2 in selected vibrational-state distributions, allowing a systematic exploration of the effects of reactant energy on the product angular and energy distributions. Angular data are interpreted on the basis of competition between H+3 formation and collision-induced dissociation. The nominal atom-transfer (AT) and proton-transfer (PT) processes are identified respectively with forward and backward scattered H+3. Effects of reactant energy on AT and PT cross sections in H+2+H2 are compared with previous observations on D+2+H2 and H+2+D2. The fraction of the available energy appearing as H+3+H recoil ranges from 26% to 39% depending on reactant conditions. Previous surface-hopping trajectory calculations successfully predict most of the observed trends. Evidence is given for the existence of long-lived H+3 with internal energy in excess of the dissociation limit.

    Notes: Short duration (20 msec) neutral deuterium beams are injected into the TFTR tokamak [Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research 1986 (IAEA, Vienna, 1987), Vol. I, p. 51]. The subsequent confinement, thermalization, and diffusion of the beam ions are studied with multichannel neutron and charge exchange diagnostics. The central fast-ion diffusion (〈0.05 m2/sec ) is an order of magnitude smaller than typical thermal transport coefficients.

    Notes: In the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) [Plasma Phys. Controlled Fusion 26, 11 (1984)], the highest neutron source strength Sn and D–D fusion power gain QDD are realized in the neutral-beam-fueled and heated "supershot'' regime that occurs after extensive wall conditioning to minimize recycling. For the best supershots, Sn increases approximately as P1.8b. The highest-Q shots are characterized by high Te (up to 12 keV), Ti (up to 34 keV), and stored energy (up to 4.7 MJ), highly peaked density profiles, broad Te profiles, and lower Zeff. Replacement of critical areas of the graphite limiter tiles with carbon-fiber composite tiles and improved alignment with the plasma have mitigated the "carbon bloom.'' Wall conditioning by lithium pellet injection prior to the beam pulse reduces carbon influx and particle recycling. Empirically, QDD increases with decreasing pre-injection carbon radiation, and increases strongly with density peakedness [ne(0)/〈ne〉] during the beam pulse. To date, the best fusion results are Sn=5×1016 n/sec, QDD=1.85×10−3, and neutron yield=4.0×1016 n/pulse, obtained at Ip=1.6–1.9 MA and beam energy Eb=95–103 keV, with nearly balanced co- and counter-injected beam power. Computer simulations of supershot plasmas show that typically 50%–60% of Sn arises from beam–target reactions, with the remainder divided between beam–beam and thermonuclear reactions, the thermonuclear fraction increasing with Pb. The simulations predict that QDT=0.3–0.4 would be obtained for the best present plasma conditions, if half the deuterium neutral beams were to be replaced by tritium beams. Somewhat higher values are calculated if D beams are injected into a predominantly tritium target plasma. The projected central beta of fusion alphas is 0.4%–0.6%, a level sufficient for the study of alpha-induced collective effects.

    Notes: Land-locked populations of Arctic charr in four lakes on Northern Ellesmere Island (80° N) were found to consist of two distinct sizes: ‘dwarf’ and ‘normal’ charr. Both groups attained sexual maturity but differed in appearance and habitat. The smaller fish, occupying the more marginal habitats, retained their parr-markings; the larger group had the general characteristics of smolts, being more silvery and without parr-marks. In their juvenile stages, the charr destined to attain the larger group were indistinguishable from members of the smaller group. Although fish in the larger group were capable of cannibalism, this was rarely observed. In general, the fish in the larger group were older than the smaller ones but great variation in size at a given age resulted in certain age classes containing representatives of both groups. The population structure varied considerably between lakes; a high proportion of ‘normal’ charr correlated well with a high growth rate in the first few years of development. It is postulated that the two groups live in dynamic equilibrium where the advantages of progenesis (retention of juvenile characters by adults) in the smaller type are traded against the larger proportion of the energy resources available to the larger type. The concept of heterochrony in an ecological setting is introduced.

    Notes: Summary During sleep, in thermoneutral conditions, the noise of a passing vehicle induces a biphasic cardiac response, a transient peripheral vasoconstriction and sleep disturbances. The present study was performed to determine whether or not the physiological responses were modified in a hot environment or after daytime exposure to both heat and noise. Eight young men were exposed to a nocturnal thermoneutral (20° C) or hot (35° C) environment disturbed by traffic noise. During the night, the peak intensities were of 71 dB(A) for trucks, 67 dB(A) for motorbikes and 64 dB(A) for cars. The background noise level (pink noise) was set at 30 dB(A). The noises were randomly distributed at a rate of 9·h−1. Nights were equally preceded by day-time exposure to combined heat and noise or to no disturbance. During the day, the noises as well as the background noise levels were increased by 15 dB(A) and the rate was 48 · h−1. Electroencephalogram (EEG) measures of sleep, electrocardiograms and finger pulse amplitudes were continuously recorded. Regardless of the day condition, when compared with undisturbed nights, the nocturnal increase in the level of heart rate induced by heat exposure disappeared when noise was added. Percentages, delays, magnitudes and costs of cardiac and vascular responses as well as EEG events such as transient activation phases (TAP) due to noise were not affected by nocturnal thermal load or by the preceding daytime exposure to disturbances. Cardiovascular responses and TAP depended on the type of traffic noise and on the sleep stage during which noise occurred: motorbike noise provoked more disturbance than car or truck noise although the latter had the largest peak intensity. The TAP induced by noise were more frequent in stage 2 sleep than in other sleep stages. Cardiovascular responses were of lower amplitude in slow wave sleep (SWS) than in stage 2 sleep or in rapid eye movements (REM) sleep. These results suggested that the deleterious effect of noise on sleep depended on the type of noise (getting-up time and spectral composition) and that SWS was the least disturbed sleep stage when compared with stage 2 and REM sleep.
