    Notes: Seven varieties of white clover (Trifolium repens L.), of varying leaf size from large to small, were sown with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) in 1985, at an upland site, and compared over three harvest years under a cutting management (5-6 cuts), and under continuous grazing by sheep. Fertilizer N input totalled 80 kg ha−1 in both the cutting and the grazing trial. The same varieties were included in two official National List (NL) trials sown the same year at a nearby site; these comprised a yield trial with 6-7 cuts and a persistency trial mown very frequently (17 cuts) to simulate intensive grazing.At the upland site the large-leaved varieties, Milkanova and Blanca, were the highest yielding under cutting (mean 3·3 t DM ha−1), and the small-leaved S184 and Kent the lowest yielding (mean 2·3 t DM ha−1). The rankings were reversed under grazing (corresponding yields 1·1 and 2·1 t DM ha−1). The medium-leaved varieties Donna, Menna and Grasslands Huia behaved similarly to the large-leaved varieties. Ranking order in the cutting trial was similar to that in the NL trial.Ground covers after three harvest years differed significantly only under grazing, when the small-leaved varieties had a 2-3 times greater cover than the larger-leaved varieties. A poor separation of the varieties in the NL persistency trial suggests that defoliation was not sufficiently severe to simulate intensive grazing.These comparisons indicate that the performance of clover varieties under the cutting regimes used should not be extrapolated to continuous sheep grazing.

    Notes: We report the growth of cubic boron nitride (cBN) films by magnetron sputtering on Si (100) substrates. The films are grown in the presence of negative substrate bias voltages and a nitrogen plasma produced by an electron cyclotron resonance source. We find evidence for a sharp low-voltage threshold in the substrate bias (−105 V) beyond which the samples are predominantly cBN. The structural quality of the cBN films is optimized in a narrow range of voltages near this threshold. We discuss the important role of energetic ions in the formation of cBN in light of recent theoretical findings.

    Notes: We report results from cathodoluminescence spectroscopy of boron nitride films grown on Si(100) substrates by ion-source-assisted magnetron sputtering of a hexagonal BN target. Three main peaks are observed in the near-band-gap region for hexagonal boron nitride films at energies of 4.90, 5.31, and 5.50 eV. We also report deep-level emission spectra of predominantly cubic boron nitride films which are correlated with sample growth conditions. In particular we show that the emission intensity, position, and linewidth are strongly dependent on the substrate bias voltage used during sample growth.

    Notes: This study presents mortality data from a 20-year follow-up of 99 married men with drinking problems. Party-four of the sample had died and death certificates were obtained on 43. Cause of death was classified according to the Ninth Revision of the International Classification of Diseases. Most of the mortality excess was in the 45–54 year age group. The observed/expected mortality ratio was 3.64 for the group as a whole, 2.93 for the moderately dependent group and 4.41 for the severely dependent group. The commonest causes of death were carcinoma of the bronchus and diseases of the circulatory system. Cause of death was analysed in terms of years of life lost. The number of yean of life lost per death was highest for injury and poisoning. Only four of the 43 death certificates obtained mentioned “chronic alcoholism”.

    Notes: Abstract The motion of a two-dimensional bubble which is moving between two parallel plates under the influence of a constant pressure has been investigated using the Boundary Element Method. A free surface location algorithm has been developed so that the profile of the bubble may be predicted over a large range of values of the surface tension. The numerically predicted results are compared with existing experimental data and the results are encouraging.

    Notes: Abstract Water and cation budgets were calculated for two sub-basins within a small low relief watershed in South-Central Ontario during a period of ephemeral runoff which was initiated by spring snow melt. The hydrology of one (upland) sub-basin was strongly influenced by seasonal fluctuations in the level of regional ground water. Saturated contributing areas formed in low lying regions adjacent to the stream channel where the water table rose to the surface, and stream discharge was a mixture of ground water and saturation overland flow. In the second sub-basin a wetland provided a large and spatially less variable saturated contributing area. Clay soils underlying the wetland resulted in a shallow perched water table, poorly drained and highly organic soils, and greatly reduced inputs of regional ground water. Stream discharge was largely the result of surface runoff from the wetland and adjacent areas of saturated soil. Inter-basin variations in water export were by far greater than variations in stream chemistry. As a result, inter-basin variations in cation export strongly reflected variations in water export over the time interval in which the majority of a given ion was lost from the watershed. Spatial differences in water export were least at the onset of runoff when basin saturation was greatest and overland flow made large contributions to the discharge from both sub-basins. Potassium and hydrogen had high concentrations at this time which caused these ions to show only small spatial differences in export. With decreases in the areal extent of soil saturation, and increases in the storage capacity of the wetland, the hydrologic contrast between sub-basins increased. Greater water loss from the upland area resulted from a greater discharge of regional ground water, and a more rapid expansion of the saturated contributing areas during storm events. Calcium, magnesium, and sodium concentrations increased steadily during the first 3 weeks of runoff, so that the peak export of these cations occurred later in the runoff period at times of higher concentration, but lower and spatially more variable discharges. Consequently, spatial differences in the loss of these ions was great and favoured the upland sub-basin, since the majority of export occurred when the hydrologic contrast between sub-basins was largest.

    Notes: Abstract The need for highly charged heavy ions from projected particle accelerators has recently led to a re-evaluation of the complex processes of ion production in laser generated plasmas. Possible mechanisms for the production of intense beams of high charge state ions are investigated as is the experimental evidence for these mechanisms. The hypothesis that 20 keV ions are driven by “hot electrons” is not supported by experimental work to date. This work, on the other hand, suggests that 30ps pulsation is the basic mechanism for the acceleration of tantalum ions up to charge state 8+ whose energy increases linearly with charge state up to 24keV. For long pulses and charge states between 8+ and 18+, it appears that there is a secondary mechanism of electron impact ionisation by plasma electrons of approximately 200 eV in the plasma in front of the target, resulting in ions whose energy of around 24 keV is independent of charge state.
