    Notes: A study of the aging characteristics of evaporated ZnS:Mn alternating-current thin-film electroluminescent (ACTFEL) devices is undertaken by monitoring the capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristics at various temperatures as a function of aging time. Short-term ACTFEL aging is characterized by a rigid shift in the C-V curve to higher turn-on voltage with aging time. Additionally, the insulator and phosphor capacitances are found to be independent of aging time, the internal phosphor threshold voltage increases slightly with aging time, and the conduction and polarization charges are observed to decrease with aging time. The activation energy for ACTFEL aging is estimated to be about 0.2 eV. These experimental observations lead to a picture for ACTFEL aging in which atomic rearrangement at insulator/phosphor interfaces gives rise to the formation of deep level, fixed charge states. Transported electrons subsequently trapped in these deep levels reduce the amount of charge available for conduction with a concomitant reduction in the polarization charge. The reduction in the polarization charge is responsible for the observed increase in the turn-on voltage with aging.

    Notes: To reduce the load on switching elements in the excitation circuit of excimer lasers, a new circuit has been developed to study the basic characteristics, where a saturable transformer is utilized in the magnetic pulse compressor. We have used a saturable transformer with a winding ratio of 1:4. The initial pulse of 8.5 kV, 2.0 kA, 3 μs was transferred to the output pulse of 34 kV, 8 kA, 109 ns, with an energy-transfer efficiency of 58%. Using a saturable inductor as a charging inductor, furthermore, we have succeeded in reduction of the prepulse of the output voltage and enhancement of the energy-transfer efficiency.

    Notes: Summary Acetabular osteonecrosis is a rare condition. Only five cases with histological analysis have been reported in the literature, and these patients had previously received radiotherapy. The 67-year-old woman reported on here, who had had no major systemic disorder or local radiotherapy, and who had never consumed alcohol, developed aseptic osteonecrosis of the acetabulum after femoral head replacement with a cemented Austin-Moore prosthesis for aseptic osteonecrosis of the femoral head following femoral neck fracture. The necrosis was found during surgery to go so deeply into each bone composing the acetabulum that the hip joint could not be revised, and we had to perform a Girdlestone resection arthroplasty. The radiographic and histological findings resembled those reported in cases of aseptic osteonecrosis of the acetabulum after radiotherapy.

    Notes: Summary Pearson's syndrome is a disease of refractory sideroblastic anemia and exocrine pancreatic dysfunction due to abnormal mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). A male infant with Pearson's syndrome developed necrosis of both thalami and basal ganglia when he suffered from gastroenteritis at 1 year and 11 months of age. He died of sepsis at the age of 2 years and 4 months. Analysis of mtDNA from various organs revealed abnormal mtDNA with deletion by 5 kbp, confirming the diagnosis. At autopsy, the brain had symmetrical cavities in putamen, caudate nuclei and medial nuclei of the thalami. Ferruginous granules in nerve cells in medial thalamic nuclei, and scattered round bodies with neuronophagia in lateral nuclei were found at light microscopic observation. Electron microscopy showed that these granules were composed of radiating spicules and a dense layer containing packed cytoplasmic organelles, respectively. The macroscopic distribution of brain lesions was very similar to and characteristic of Leigh's disease. This similarity leads to the supposition that defective intracellular energy utilization common to Leigh's disease could be responsible for brain lesions in this case. Although the histological appearance was somewhat atypical for Leigh's disease, very acute formation of brain lesions in this case was thought to have caused the histological difference.

    Notes: Summary We compared the morphologic characteristics of muscle fiber necrosis and subsequent regeneration after injury induced by intramuscular injections of bupivacaine hydrochloride (BPVC) and a variety of solutions at acid and alkaline pH (acetic anhydride, citric acid buffer, and sodium carbonate buffer). After BPVC injection the necrotic muscle fibers were rapidly invaded by phagocytic cells, followed by active regeneration and very little fibrous scar formation. The regenerating muscle fibers increased rapidly in size and attained complete fiber type differentiation and regained their initial fiber diameter within 1 month. Both alkaline and acid solutions induced muscle fiber necrosis followed by regeneration. Fiber necrosis induced by alkaline buffers and acetic anhydride solutions above pH 5.0 produced changes quite similar to that induced by BPVC. However, injection with 0.1 M acetic anhydride at pH below 4.0 resulted in coagulative necrosis of the injured muscle with very little phagocytic infiltration with poor regenerative activity and dense fibrous tissue scarring. Thus, pH 4.0 appears to be the critical pH determining the type of muscle injury and subsequent poor phagocytic and regenerative activities. This model of acidic acetic anhydride injury may lead to the identification of factors which interfere with regeneration and cause fibrous tissue scarring in human muscular dystrophy.

    Notes: Summary The effect of topical glycerol injection into the rat trigeminal nerves was investigated histologically and immunohistochemically. Anhydrous glycerol was injected into the preganglionic portion of the trigeminal nerves via a ventral approach. Extensive myelin swelling and axonolysis were observed in the rats killed 1 and 2 weeks after glycerol injection. Numerous inflammatory cells were seen especially in the animals sacrificed 1 week after surgery. Myelin disintegration continued up to 4 weeks after glycerol injection. In normal and saline injected sham operated nerves, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)- and substance P(SP)-like immunoreactivities were densely localized in the nerve fibers. A marked decrease in both CGRP- and SP-like immunofluorescence was seen in the nerves after glycerol injection. The remaining nerve fibers often had blunt endings with increased fluorescence. Swollen and winding structures were also found. These immunohistochemical changes were observed in the rats killed 1 and 2 weeks following surgery. A similar change but of lesser degree was seen in the 4-week-animal. The present study suggests that topical glycerol injection into the trigeminal nerve induces degeneration of the nerves immunoreactive to CGRP and SP. These changes emphasize the putative functional implications of the peptides in relieving the pain of trigeminal neuralgia after topical glycerol injection.

    Notes: Summary Aneurysms arising from the dorsal wall of the internal carotid artery are rare. The authors surgically treated twenty dorsal internal carotid artery aneurysms. Pre-operative angiographic findings were reviewed and classified into three types. Eleven aneurysms projecting superiorly on the lateral angiogram were found to be adherent to the base of the frontal lobe by the pterional approach. Five aneurysms which had been superimposed with the internal carotid artery on the lateral angiogram were found adhered to the medial surface of the temporal lobe. Four aneurysms not seen on the angiogram had no adhesion. Two aneurysms, which had not been seen on the initial angiograms, were visualized on the angiograms taken during the period of vasospasm. This type of aneurysms can be the source of a subarachnoid haemorrhage of unknown origin and requires repeated examinations. Premature rupture occured intra-operatively in five cases and postoperative bleeding was encountered in two. Clipping technique is discussed from the viewpoint of preventing intra- and postoperative rupture.

    Notes: Abstract Pathological studies have revealed that the vasculitis in Kawasaki disease (KD) begins in the intima and the adventitia of blood vessels resulting in panvasculitis. In the present study we investigated the possibility that auto-antibodies to types III and II collagen are involved in the vascular injury. Seven out of 38 patients (18%) with KD had elevated serum levels of IgG anti-body to type III collagen. None had increased serum antibodies to type II collagen. Specificity of the antibody to type III collagen in patients with KD was 86%. Three out of seven KD patients (42.9%) with coronary complications had elevated serum levels of the antibody. It is conceivable that the more severe the inflammation of systemic blood vessels, the more frequently antibodies to type III collagen are detected and coronary complications develop. Accordingly, this antibody may be secondarily detected in the serum of KD when systemic blood vessels are severely damaged. Detection of antibodies to type III collagen might be a risk factor predicting coronary complications.
