Notes: This paper describes how a small helium (4He) peak can be separated from a large adjacent deuterium (D2) peak using a modified quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS). This QMS utilized a condition of the second stability zone (zone II) in the Mathieu diagram. The minimum detectable peak ratio of 4He to D2 was 10−4 when a mass scan line was set close to the upper tip, and was 10−3 when the scan line was adjusted to the lower tip. The ion transmission rates simulating the peaks were calculated for the upper and lower zone conditions. It was found that a longer peak tail occurs when an unstable orbit has mainly a cosh function. From the experimental and theoretical data, it is concluded that the upper zone condition is the most suitable for realizing a high-resolution peak.

Notes: We examine the effect of bulk microdefects (BMD) intentionally introduced in Czochralski silicon substrates by heat treatment on the dielectric breakdown of thermally grown SiO2 films. Transmission electron microscope observations reveal that the BMD consist of oxygen precipitates, perfect dislocation loops, and faulted dislocation loops. When the BMD are incorporated into the SiO2 film during thermal oxidation, an apparent decrease in the breakdown field is observed. The size of the oxygen precipitates has a clear relationship with the breakdown field: larger oxygen precipitate causes greater degradation. The dislocation loops are unrelated to the breakdown field.

Notes: Summary We have developed a frameless stereotactic multi-articulated arm suitable for image-directed microsurgery and surgical navigation. The system comprises a frameless isocentric mechanism and a three-dimensional (3 D) digitizer for intra-operative monitoring. Five joints of our multi-articulated arm are equipped with electromagnetic clutches, and the arms are provided with counterbalancing weights to ensure safe, smooth movement. Stereotactic microsurgical procedures were carried out with a laser beam guide mounted at the tip of the isocentric arm. We have used this system in 22 cases to resect tumours or epileptic foci. There were 12 cases of glioma, 5 cases of deep seated benign tumours, 3 cases of multiple metastatic tumours, and 2 cases of temporal lobe epilepsy. Postoperative enhanced CT images indicated total or subtotal resection in all cases. We also have used this system to determine the approach for clipping of a posterior cerebral artery aneurysm in 2 cases. The error of mechanical accuracy of the system was less than 1 mm. We believe that this system will prove useful in image-directed microsurgical procedures.

Notes: Summary Glucosamine-binding sites were detected in Lowicryl K4M-embedded guinea pig middle ear mucosa by electron microscopy, using glucosaminyl bovine serum albumin. Incubation of ultrathin tissue sections with gold-labeled glucosaminyl bovine serum albumin (GlcN/BSA/gold) resulted in binding mainly on cilia, microvilli, rough endoplasmic reticulum and nuclei. The sugar binding was not inhibited after ultrathin sections had been digested with trypsin or neuraminidase. Various carbohydrates and glycoconjugates were tested as competitive inhibitors of G1cN/BSA/gold labeling on the tissue sections. The sugar specificity range detected by the glucosamine-binding sites included glucosamine, N-acetylglucosamine, mannose and fucose, whereas N-acetylgalactosamine, galactose and glucose were not detectable. A series of endotoxic substances such as Salmonella minnesota Re595 lipid A complex with BSA and lipopolysaccharides (LPS) derived from Escherichia coli 055: B5 or S. minnesota Re595 also competed with GlcN/BSA/gold binding. This indicates that the lipid A backbone glucosamine or other carbohydrate portions of LPS is a part of the structure recognized by glucosamine binding sites.

Notes: Abstract The stress intensity factors for three-dimensional cruciform surface cracks in a semi-infinite body are numerically calculated by the body force method. Mindlin's point force solution is used for the derivation of basic equations to express the influence coefficient of triangular elements, into which the crack is divided. The interactions between crossed crack planes as well as contact between crack surfaces are considered in the iterative manner. Stress intensity factors for a cruciform median crack and a cruciform semicircular crack under a point force on the surface of a semi-infinite solid are analyzed. The possibility of growth of a median crack toward the free surface of the semi-infinite solid is discussed. A cruciform semicircular surface crack under remote uniaxial tension, or under combined tension and compression is also analyzed. The effect of contact of crack surfaces on stress intensity factors is discussed.

Notes: Abstract In AKR/J mice inoculated intraperitoneally with protoscoleces ofEchinococcus multilocularis, the oral administration of alpha-difluoromethylornithine (DFMO) in drinking water had no obvious effect on the development of hydatid cysts. The DFMO treatment also caused no apparent depletion of three major polyamines (putrescine, spermidine, and spermine) in the cysts, although a slight reduction in the putrescine level was detected. The failure of DFMO treatment to reduce the growth of cysts in mice may result from the absence of ornithine decarboxylase in the parasite.

Notes: Summary The pathogenesis of infection in mice with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) strain 7401H was studied. Mice immunosuppressed by intraperitoneal injection of cyclophosphamide were inoculated cutaneously into the flank with the virus and developed severe zosteriform skin lesions. All of them died within 2 weeks after the infection, while most of the normal mice survived the viral infection with healing of the lesions. In the gastrointestinal tract of the immunosuppressed mice, macroscopic abnormalities were frequently observed, and infectious viruses were detected on days 7 to 9. The viruses were also detectable in the dorsal root ganglia and the spinal cord of thoracolumbar area on days 5 to 7, and in the celiac plexus on day 7. However, no viruses were detected in the blood. Immunohistological examination of the gastrointestinal tract revealed that the viral antigens were localized in Auerbach's myenteric plexus. These results suggest that HSV-1 inoculated into the flank skin invaded the gastrointestinal tract via the nervous system, which gastrointestinal involvement might possibly have caused the death of the mice.
