Notes: We report on the development of a new two-dimensional micropositioning device, or walker, which is capable of moving across very large distances (in principle unlimited) and with a very small step size (as small as 100 A(ring)/step) in both directions. Based on a unique tracking design, the motion is extremely orthogonal with very little crosstalk between the two directions. Additionally, there is no detectable backlash in either direction. The walker performance has been extensively tested by using a position-sensitive proximitor probe. Tests have been done between 77 and 300 K. However, we project that the walker will be able to operate at temperatures as low as 4 K. This walker system has shown extremely reliable performance in a UHV environment for use with scanning tunneling microscopy and has been especially useful for cross-sectional scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy studies of semiconductor hetero- and homostructures. We show one example of results on the (AlGa)As/GaAs heterostructure system.

Notes: The results of an investigation into the growth of Ga0.32In0.68As/Ga0.61In0.39As strain compensated multiple quantum well stacks are presented. We show that these structures, which contain alloys that are not prone to compositional clustering, do suffer from thickness modulated growth. A growth strategy has been developed to inhibit this phenomenon and a 50 well, strain compensated stack has been grown with planar and abrupt interfaces. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: High quality YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) films have been epitaxially grown on low dielectric constant, low loss tangent (001)MgF2 substrates using a double buffer layer scheme. The YBCO films are (001) oriented, exhibit Tc's of 88–89 K with transition widths ≤0.5 K and Jc's of 4×106 A/cm2 at 77 K in zero field. Dielectric resonator experiments indicate unloaded Q values in excess of 30 000 at 77 K and 24 GHz in the unpatterned films. Films patterned into meanderline resonators and operating at 10 GHz, 79 K, exhibit surface resistance (Rs)〈1 m Ω suggesting near-future realization of low loss superconducting components in the millimeter-wave region.

Notes: The capacity of the sewage-treatment works at Silchester in Hampshire has been enhanced and the effluent quality improved to a high standard by the installation of a new submerged biological aerated filter plant. Ten prefabricated steel submerged aerated filters reduce BOD and fully nitrify settled domestic sewage from a population equivalent of 20 000.Comprehensive operating data are presented to demonstrate the ability of single-stage submerged downflow aerated biological filters to produce a nitrified effluent. The final effluent quality remains consistently within consent limits at 4.8 mg/l BOD, 7.0 mg/l SS and 0.5 mg/l NH3-N, all 95 percentiles. (Consent 7 mg/l BOD, 25 mg/l SS, and 5 mg/l NH3-N, 95 percentiles.)Data are presented on total coliform and E. Coli concentrations through the filter plant, showing better than 3 log reductions in the effluent.

Notes: The capillary endothelial cells of the median eminence represent a potential site for the degradation/modification of both circulating and hypothalamic peptides passing through the hypophysial portal system toward the pituitary. This study examines endothelial cell peptidase expression in vitro by monitoring the metabolism of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) by cultured endothelial cells from sheep median eminence. Cleavage of GnRH by median eminence endothelial cell membranes generated GnRH1–5 as the primary stable product, which was then degraded to GnRH1–3 and free amino acids. Degradation of GnRH was completely inhibited by TPCK, ZnCI2 and N-ethylmaleimide, and partially inhibited by EDTA and by a specific inhibitor of the metalloendopeptidase EC 3.4.24.15, CFP-AAY-pAB. Interestingly, an increase in GnRH1–9 production was seen with the latter inhibitors, suggesting a two-step mechanism of GnRH degradation involving a primary cleavage at the Pro9-Gly10-NH2 bond, inhibitable by TPCK, ZnCI2, and NEM, followed by cleavage by EC 3.4.24.15 to generate GnRH1–5. Phosphoramidon and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (as well as other non-specific inhibitors) were without effect, indicating that endopeptidase EC 3.4.24.11 and angiotensin converting enzyme are not involved. Neither bovine aortic endothelial cell nor AtT-20 cell membranes exhibited this pattern of peptidase activity. Degradation of GnRH by intact median eminence endothelial cells in culture was also observed, suggesting an extracellular orientation for these enzymes; the potential role of such peptidases in the fine regulation of both pituitary function and local blood flow is currently under investigation.

Notes: 1. Standard renal clearance techniques were used to compare the acute effects of gentamicin, neomycin and tobramycin on renal calcium and magnesium handling in Sprague-Dawley and Fischer 344 rats.2. Significant hypercalciuric and hypermagnesiuric responses to all three drugs (P〈0.01) were apparent within 30 min of the onset of drug infusion.3. The magnitude of the acute hypercalciuric and hypermagnesiuric response to the three aminoglycosides was comparable. This contrasts with their nephrotoxic action where neomycin 〉〉 gentamicin 〉 tobramycin. The magnitude of the acute physiological responses to these drugs do not therefore reflect their nephrotoxic potential.4. Sprague-Dawley rats were at least as responsive as Fischer rats in their acute renal responses to gentamicin. If Fischer rats are more sensitive to aminoglycoside nephrotoxicity than Sprague-Dawley rats, this is not reflected in their acute responses to gentamicin.

Notes: Abstract Twenty-two patients with functional obstructive defaecation were compared with seven patients with slow transit constipation using isotope proctography. The obstructive defaecation patients were unable to perform a complete rectal evacuation (% of the activity evacuated: 54%). The defaecation time in this group was prolonged (120 s) with a lower defaecation rate (0.5%/s) compared with the slow transit constipation subjects (32 s and 1.8%/s). The anorectal angle (ARA) on straining did not change in the obstructive defaecation patients but became more obtuse in the slow transit constipation subjects (P〈0.02). The pelvic floor (PF) descent on straining and evacuation was greater in obstructive defaecation patients compared with the slow transit constipation ones (P〈0.01). Obstructive defaecation is characterised by prolonged defaecation and reduced defaecation rate compared with slow transit constipation. Obstructive defaecation patients present with more acute ARAs on straining, and abnormal perineal descent in contrast to the slow transit constipation ones.
