    Notes: The irradiation uniformity of the GEKKO XII laser [C. Yamanaka et al., IEEE J. Quantum Electron. QE-17 1639 (1981)] has been improved by using partially coherent light with angular spectral dispersion and by improving power balance among the beams. Implosion experiments with the uniformity-improved GEKKO XII have been carried out in order to demonstrate stable formation of the hot spark. The isentrope of the compressed pellet shell is controlled by adding a prepulse to enhance the ablative stabilization of the Rayleigh–Taylor instability. The implosion dynamics has been investigated by x-ray imaging and neutron diagnostics. The experimental results are compared with the mix model prediction based on the one-dimensional hydrodynamic simulation. The degradation of neutron yield is attributed to the low-mode asymmetry. Finally, recent results of planer target experiments on the ablative stabilization of the Rayleigh–Taylor instability are also presented. The observed linear growth rate was about 50% of the classical growth rate and was lower than that of the theoretical prediction, based on the Takabe formula combined with the one-dimensional simulation. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Multicharged boron ions have been produced by a sputtering boride target in a 2.45-GHz electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) source. The target material is immersed in an ECR argon plasma along the geometrical axis of the mirror field, and dc bias voltages are applied. Extracted boron ion currents increase as the target approaches the ECR zone formed at the bottom of mirror trap although the argon charge state deteriorates. The increase of boron ion current is coincident with that of the solid angle subtended by the target at the ECR zone. Measurement of the boron flux shows that the increase of boron atoms sputtered into the ECR zone causes this enhanced production. Ratio of total boron to argon ion current and that of B2+ to B+ current are about 10% and 10%–20%, respectively. The B3+ current can be detected at low microwave power (∼150 W). The isotopes of boron are clearly separated in natural abundance ratio. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A plasma source was developed for ion implanters capable of irradiating large-area substrates. Microwave discharge is performed by electron cyclotron resonance (ECR). A rectilinearly wide flux of magnetic induction is formed with two long permanent magnets with oppositely facing poles. The ECR zone formed inside a vacuum chamber is elongated in the direction along the pole faces. A waveguide slotted along its E plane is inserted between the magnets. The long slot radiates microwaves into the vacuum chamber through dielectric materials. These materials play the role of waveguide. Plasmas are uniformly generated in the direction along the slotted waveguide when it is terminated with a short plunger. This mechanism is analyzed by calculating radiation patterns of the slotted waveguide. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report the fourth-harmonic generation of 1.5 ps, 1.053 μm glass laser pulses, where group velocity mismatch plays a significant role, at intensities up to 100 GW/cm2 using newly developed crystal, cesium lithium borate (CsLiB6O10). Type-I doubler and type-I quadrupler were used in the fourth harmonic generation experimental scheme. Energy conversion efficiencies of 24% and 53% have been achieved for frequency quadrupling and doubling of the fundamental glass laser pulses, respectively. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was administered into sheep red blood cells (SRBC)-primed mice, and the effect of LPS on SRBC-specific memory cells was investigated. Spleen cells from SRBC-primed mice which were injected with LPS exhibited much lower in vitro secondary plaque-forming cells (PFC) responses to SRBC than those from untreated SRBC-primed mice. The in vitro anti-SRBC response of the spleen cells to LPS was also reduced. The combination experiments of B cells and T cells from SRBC-primed mice which were injected with or without LPS demonstrated that the reduction of immune responses to SRBC after administration of LPS was caused by the defect of SRBC-specific B memory cells, but not T memory cells. B cell type rosette-forming cells (RFC) for SRBC markedly decreased after injection of LPS, while PFC as antibody-forming cells did not increase subsequently. Therefore, the reduction of RFC was not due to their differentiation into PFC. The lymphoid follicles in the spleens from mice injected with LPS were stained positively by in situ nick end labeling specific for fragmented DNA. A large percentage of Ig+ spleen cells from SRBC-primed mice which were injected with LPS was also stained positively. The injection of glucocorticoids into SRBC-primed mice induced similar reduction of B memory cells. It was suggested that LPS might induce apoptosis of B memory cells and regulate B cell memory in antigen-nonspecific manner.

    Notes: Abstract The participation of apoptotic cell death in the generalized Shwartzman reaction was examined. The generalized Shwartzman reaction was induced in mice by two consecutive injections of lipopolysaccharide. Vascular endothelial cells in various organs of those mice were stained positively by the in situ specific labeling of fragmented DNA. Renal tubules were also stained focally. It was suggested that apoptotic cell death might participate in the development of vascular endothelial cell damage and acute tubular necrosis in the generalized Shwartzman reaction. Simultaneous administration of anti-γ-interferon antibody in the preparative injection of lipopolysaccharide completely blocked apoptosis of vascular endothelial cells. Priming with recombinant γ-interferon instead of lipopolysaccharide could produce apoptosis of vascular endothelial cells. It was suggested that γ-interferon might play a critical role on sensitization of endothelial cells for apoptosis.

    Notes: Abstract.  We experimentally studied properties of traveling-wave excitation and traveling-wave pulse compression for a Nd : glass laser system with a streak camera. These properties were extended to second-harmonic generation with a type-II KDP crystal. We found that the second-harmonic pulse generated from the chirped-fundamental pulse also has a good chirp linearity, but the spectral bandwidth and temporal duration were reduced. We demonstrated the effective subpulse suppression in the compressed pulse with the second-harmonic generation. The pulse with tilted wave front, short wavelength and high contrast ratio can be obtained by the second-harmonic generation of traveling-wave pulse.

    Notes: Abstract We have tested soft X-ray lasing in neon-like germanium with cylindrical targets where wave guiding and plasma confinement may affect lasing. An intense soft X-ray laser beam of 0.05 MW peak power and a narrow beam divergence (8 mrad) was produced at 23.6 nm with a 4 cm long straight cylindrical target of 0.72 mm inner diameter. Bending the cylindrical target to form a toroidal shape increased the lasing intensity by a factor of 3 accompanied with reduction of the beam divergence from 8 to 6 mrad.

    Notes: Summary The gene of Marek's disease virus (MDV) serotype 2 (MDV2) homologous to glycoprotein D (gD) of herpes simplex virus (HSV) was identified and characterized by its nucleotide and predicted amino acid sequences. The MDV2 gD homologous gene contains an open reading frame capable of specifying a polypeptide of 385 amino acids, which include N- and C-terminal hydrophobic domains consistent with signal and anchor regions, respectively, and two potential N-linked glycosylation sites, one of which was located in a highly conserved region when compared to MDV serotype 1 (MDV1) and herpesvirus of turkeys (HVT). By northern blot analysis using a MDV2 gD-specific DNA probe, two highly abundant polycistronic 6.0 and 4.2 kb transcripts were detected in MDV2-infected cells. The genes encoding MDV2 protein kinase (PK), gD, and glycoprotein I (gI) homologues are transcribed to form 3′ coterminal mRNAs of 6.0 kb (encoding PK, gD and gI) and 4.2 kb (encoding gD and gI), respectively. By using rapid amplification cDNA end (RACE) method, several RNA start sites, to be thought those of the 4.2 kb mRNA, were detected in the upstream of MDV2 gD homologue.
