    Notes: We have observed spin-glass freezing in a nominally pure single crystal of the S=1 linear-chain Heisenberg antiferromagnet Ni(C2H8N2)2NO2(ClO4)(NENP) by direct current (dc), linear alternating current (ac), and nonlinear ac susceptibility measurements. A possible origin of this spin-glass freezing is discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Epidermal growth-factor receptor (EGF-r), a membranebound glycoprotein activated by EGF, is important in maintaining the integrity and function of the prostate. To investigate EGF-r presence in the prostate of the rhesus monkey, monoclonal-antibody immunohistochemical examination was performed. The monkey prostate consisted of the cranial and caudal lobes, and the prostatic epithelial cells were composed of the secretory and basal cells. The distribution patterns of EGF-r in the prostatic epithelial cells were quite different between the cranial and caudal lobes. In the caudal lobe, EGF-r was seen in both secretory and basai cells, whereas, in the cranial lobe, the EGF-r was seen exclusively in the basal cells. The stromal cells of both lobes did not show EGF-r. This study revealed that each prostatic lobe contains specific binding sites for EGF, indicating a biological difference between the two lobes of the prostate of the rhesus monkey.

    Notes: Abstract This ultrastructural study deals with the synapses of primary dendrites of the anterior horn neurons in the lower lumbar spinal cords of seven patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) who had mild neuronal depletion. Specimens from seven age-matched, neurologically normal individuals served as controls. In each instance, the autopsy was performed within 6 h after death. Our results indicate a statistically significant increase in degenerative changes in the dendrite presynapses of normal-appearing neurons of the ALS patients. The alterations included aggregation of electron-dense synaptic vesicles and dark mitochondria with dense cristae, and bundles of neurofilaments. However, we found no significant difference between controls and patients with respect to cross-sectional area and length of the dendrites, number of synapses per dendrite, and lengths of individual synapses and their active zones in the normal-appearing neurons, even though the patients' neurons had a smaller cross-sectional area. In chromatolytic neurons, the number of synapses and the length of the active zone of the primary dendrites were significantly diminished. These findings suggest that despite degenerative changes of the presynapses, the synapses in the primary dendrites of the anterior horn neurons are preserved at the early stage of ALS. The preservation of these synapses may be due to their relative resistance to degenerative processes, or may represent a compensatory mechanism of the synapses for diminished synaptic function in distal dendrites.

    Notes: Abstract This report concerns an ultrastructural investigation of the synapses of anterior horn neurons in the lumbar spinal cord of four patients with lower motor neuron disease (LMND) who had no upper motor neuron and corticospinal tract involvement. Anterior horn neurons of five normal individuals served as controls. The cell body area and the number of synapses of the normal-appearing neurons of the LMND patients were significantly reduced (P 〈 0.0001). These findings suggest that synaptic changes of anterior horn neurons could be ascribed to the degeneration of lower motor neurons rather than to the influence of upper motor neuron system degeneration. On the other hand, the lengths of individual synapses (P 〈 0.0001) and of their active zones (P 〈 0.05) were significantly increased in the patients. These increases would indicate that synapses on anterior horn neurons of individuals with LMND appear to have the capacity to react to progressive degeneration and loss of other synapses by means of a compensatory response or plasticity that enhances their efficiency.

    Notes: Abstract  Disposable-type microbial sensors were prepared for the determination of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). The yeast, Trichosporon cutaneum, was directly immobilized on the surface of miniature oxygen electrodes using an ultraviolet crosslinking resin (ENT-3400). The oxygen electrodes (15 mm× 2 mm×0.4 mm) were made on silicon substrates using micromachining techniques. They were Clark-type two-electrode systems with−1021 mV applied to the working electrode. Typical response times of the BOD sensors were in the range of 7–20 min. At 20°C, the sensors’ dynamic range was from 0 to 18 mg/l BOD when a glucose/glutamate BOD standard solution was used. The lower limit of detection was 0.2 mg/l BOD. This value was one order of magnitude lower than that of sensors previously reported. The sensors’ operational lifetime of 3 days was satisfactory for a disposable type. The sensors’ responses were reproducible to within 8% relative standard deviation. The BOD sensors’ were applied to untreated and treated waste waters from industrial effluents and municipal sewage. BOD values determined using these sensors correlated well with those determined by the conventional 5-day BOD determination method.

    Notes: Abstract We investigated the significance of milky spots for malignant cells in peritoneal dissemination using three mouse carcinomatous peritonitis models. P388 leukemia and Colon 26 cancer cells were labeled with bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) and mice were inoculated intraperitoneally. After 24 h the greater omentum and the mesenterium were removed and stained immunohistochemically with anti-BrdU antibody. The labeled cells were found to have preferentially infiltrated into the milky spots in these specimens. Next, using B16 PC melanoma cells, which can be easily distinguished from the other cells by the intrinsic black melanin, the distribution of the melanoma cells was observed macro- and microscopically following intraperitoneal inoculation. The melanoma cells were similarly found to have selectively infiltrated into the milky spots in the omentum and mesenterium after 1 day. Moreover, the melanoma cells were growing and forming distinct metastic lesions within the milky spots 1 week later.

    Notes: Abstract  Changes in electrolytes of pig pancreatic acinar cells following application of gastrin-cholecystokinin (CCK) were investigated using the technique of X-ray microanalysis of hydrated and dehydrated sections of freshly frozen pancreas. After stimulation by CCK (10–9 M), Na and Cl increased significantly in the cytoplasm [Na, from 10 mmol/kg wet wt. (48 mmol/kg dry wt.) to 19 mmol/kg (95 mmol/kg); Cl, from 22 mmol/kg (105 mmol/kg) to 49 mmol/kg (245 mmol/kg)] as well as in the luminal interspace [Na, from 53 mmol/kg (189 mmol/kg) to 65 mmol/kg (283 mmol/kg); Cl, from 65 mmol/kg (232 mmol/kg) to 102 mmol/kg (443 mmol/kg)]. In the secretory granules Cl increased significantly from 30 mmol/kg (86 mmol/kg) to 67 mmol/kg (203 mmol/kg). K decreased significantly from 120 mmol/kg (571 mmol/kg) to 81 mmol/kg (405 mmol/kg) in the cytoplasm, while both increased from 38 mmol/kg (109 mmol/kg) to 58 mmol/kg (176 mmol/kg) in the granules and from 46 mmol/kg (164 mmol/kg) to 48 mmol/kg (209 mmol/kg) in the luminal interspace. Ca increased significantly in the cytoplasm as well as in the luminal interspace, and decreased significantly in the secretory granules. CCK evoked Ca release from secretory granules in the secretory pole of acinar cells. The values were measured from dehydrated sections, and agreed well with those from hydrated sections. The effect of furosemide, an inhibitor of the Na+-K+-2Cl–co-transporter, on the ion transport of acinar cell was studied. When furosemide (10–5 M) was added to the external solution, the cytoplasmic Cl and Ca concentrations decreased significantly, while there was a little decrease in Na and K concentrations under the secretory condition. These results indicate that Na+-K+-2Cl–co-transport, and Na+, Cl–and K+ exits into the lumen are involved in the mechanism of ion secretion in pig pancreatic acinar cells.

    Notes: Abstract Energy straggling in pulse height distributions of plastic scintillation counters of 4 and 10 cm in thickness was measured for 1 GeV/c pions and studied by Monte Carlo simulations. Calculated energy loss distributions are in good agreement with the experimental data and also with the prediction by the Landau straggling function.
