Notes: A 51-year-old white male suffering from metastatic malignant melanoma of the skin presented with lymph node metastases and paraneoplastic retinopathy 4 years after resection of the primary tumour. There were no cerebral metastases. Ocular symptoms consisting of night blindness and sensations of ‘shimmering lights’ persisted after total resection of the inguinal lymph node metastases and administration of dacarbazine and prednisone. Perimetry of both eyes was abnormal with concentric restriction. Electroretinography showed significantly reduced amplitudes in both eyes. Only 11 patients with melanoma-associated retinopathy (MAR) have been described. High titres of autoantibodies against whole retina extract were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) reactions. Indirect immunohistochemistry showed strong autoantibody activity against retinal bipolar cells.

Notes: We report the results of a study of spatially resolved surface-emitted stimulated emission in GaN epilayer samples under conditions of strong optical pumping. We observe that even at excitation powers near the damage threshold, no surface-emitted stimulated emission occurs from samples with a high quality GaN epilayer. In parts of the samples with inferior surface quality, we show that stimulated emission comes from cracks, burned spots, and other imperfections, and is due to the scattering of a photon flux propagating parallel to the surface. Our results suggest that these defects are effective scattering centers and can severely affect the accuracy of optical gain measurements. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract In the present study ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) implants from different manufacturers were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), infrared spectroscopy (IRS) and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). With DSC measurements the crystallinity of all evaluated implants ranged between 58.2% and 73.2%. The highest crystallinity was documented in Hylamer with 73.2%. These results were checked and confirmed by infrared spectroscopy. According to WAXS studies Hylamer had an orthorhomboid phase as well as a monocline phase. After remelting the orthorhomboid phase was no longer detectable. We do not recommend using UHMWPE implants which have been secondarily modified. The product Hylamer clearly demonstrates how the original crystal structure of UHMWPE can be altered. The described changes in Hylamer implants will probably lead to an increased failure rate.

Notes: Abstract  Aminobenzoic acids are of major interest in clinical analysis, but their determination in environmental samples has been rarely done. Therefore a method for the determination of 10 aminobenzoic acids in water has been developed, using high-performance liquid chromatography with combined diode array and fluorescence detection. A separation of the analytes has been achieved with a buffer pH 3/methanol gradient. The general elution order has been m-substituted〈p-subst.〈o-subst. aminobenzoic acids. UV and fluorescence data are presented. In a highly polluted water sample of the former ammunition plant Stadtallendorf/Hessen, 4-aminobenzoic acid, 2-amino- benzoic acid and 2-amino-4-nitrobenzoic acid have been detected. After passing a charcoal filter, only the concentration of 4-aminobenzoic acid in a sample from the same site has been above the detection limit. Besides the ten analytes investigated, several unknown compounds have been present in the samples.

Notes: Abstract  A new derivatization method for aromatic amines is presented based on the bromination of the aromatic ring system in an acetic acid medium to yield bromo derivatives. The derivatization method is very simple to perform and overcomes several problems common in the analysis of polar aromatic amines. The derivatives are easy to extract with pentane and can be separated with gas chromatography. Due to the introduction of the electron withdrawing bromo substituents sensitive detection using an electron capture detector is possible. The method was used to investigate the contents of amino- and aminonitrotoluenes in water samples from the site of a former ammunition plant.

Notes: Abstract An analytical method for the determination of aromatic amines in water is introduced that uses iodination with a Sandmeyer-like reaction to replace the amino group by iodine in aqueous solution. The non-polar derivatives are extracted with pentane or toluene, separated with gas chromatography and sensitively detected with an ECD. Thirteen major metabolites of nitroaromatic explosives were investigated. The method was used to analyze these metabolites in water samples from the site of a former ammunition plant. The results are compared with the derivatization of aromatic amines via bromination of the aromatic ring.

Notes: There are currently 100–200 microbiology-related databases in existence, although it is impossible to find answers to queries that span even a few of these. The Center for Microbial Ecology (CME) at Michigan State University seeks to change this situation by coordinating the creation of an Integrated Microbial Database (IMD), accessible through the World Wide Web (WWW). Such a system will contain up-to-date phylogeny and taxonomy, gene sequences (including genomes), biochemical data, metabolic models, ecological and phenotypic data. Current main obstacles to creation of an IMD are the lack of a single freely available organismal nomenclature with synonyms and the availability of much critical data. An IMD will have major impacts on microbial biology: currently intractable fundamental questions might be answered, experiments could be refocused, and new commercial possibilities created. An IMD should remain freely available and be created under an open development model.

Notes: Abstract We have investigated the physical distribution of the reverse transcriptase genes of Ty1-copia-like retrotransposable elements from 12 plant species belonging to different subdivisions by hybridization in situ on chromosome preparations. Ty1-copia-like elements showed different and non-random hybridization patterns. A dispersed distribution throughout most of the chromosomes with reduced hybridization at some regions or with some weak clustering at other regions was found in Allium cepa, Beta vulgaris, Brassica campestris, Brassica oleracea, Pennisetum glaucum, Pinus elliottii, Selaginella apoda, Vicia faba and Vicia narbonensis. Reduced hybridization occured mainly at centromeric regions, nucleolus-organizing regions and regions known to be mainly composed of tandemly repeated sequences. In the fern Pteris cretica the retroelements showed a dispersed genomic organization with clustering at some chromosomal regions and whole chromosomes showing little signal. In Arabidopsis thaliana and Cicer arietinum, Ty1-copia-like elements were found in clusters at the paracentromeric heterochromatin, a novel organization for a repetitive element in A. thaliana. New retroelement families were isolated from A. thaliana and from Beta vulgaris. Alignment of the deduced peptide sequences with Ty1-copia-like elements from other plants showed considerable divergence which was used to calculate their relationships, indicating the value of reverse transcriptase gene analysis in phylogenetic and biodiversity studies.

Notes: Conclusions Myocardial and skeletal muscular K homeostasis is of importance for the integrity of myocardial function. Myocardial K homeostasis is affected by ischemia. Cardiac failure as well as diuretic therapy may individually and combined lead to dysfunction of K homeostasis. ACE inhibitors and β-adrenoceptor antagonists can beneficially affect K homeostasis explaining the decrease in mortality seen in heart failure patients treated with such drugs. Knowledge concerning the regulation of Na,K-ATPase and its link to K handling may render new insight in the pathophysiology of cardiac disease, and may hence lead to novel therapeutic interventions based on a rational approach.

Notes: Abstract Chromatin originating from wild beets of the genus Beta, section Procumbentes, has been investigated in nematode-resistant hybrid-derived lines of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) by in situ hybridization using satellite, telomeric and ribosomal DNA repeats, a yeast artificial chromosome (YAC) and total genomic DNA as probes. The alien chromosome was detected in three monosomic addition lines(2n=18+1) by genomic in situ hybridization. Fluorescence in situ hybridization with a genome-specific satellite repeat and YAC DNA enabled the visualization of Procumbentes chromosomes, and in double-target hybridization it was shown that they do not carry 18S–5.8S–25S rRNA and 5S rRNA genes. The wild beet-specific satellite repeat and the telomere sequence from Arabidopsis thaliana were used to perform a structural analysis of the wild beet chromosome fragments of two resistant fragment addition lines. It was shown that one physical end of the chromosome fragments consists of telomeric repeats. Comparison of fragment sizes indicated that the small chromosome fragments harbouring the resistance gene most likely resulted from the loss of one wild beet chromosome arm and an internal deletion of the remaining arm.
