Notes: We describe the construction of a high voltage electric arc puller for controllable fabrication of bent near-field optical fiber probes. Various probes with bent angles ranging from 30° to 75° and bent lengths between 600 and 900 μm were successfully produced. The tip diameters achieved are between 100 and 200 nm. These bent type probes can be made into cantilevered probes that can be used for any dynamic mode atomic force microscope, and make the construction of a scanning near-field optical microscope easily attainable.© 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We present the modification of a commercial tapping mode atomic force microscope into a reflection and transmission dual mode scanning near-field optical microscope. In the configuration, the normal force detection unit is replaced by a shear force detection module and an interfacing circuit. The tip-sample distance control is therefore similar to tapping mode operation. Detection of the near-field signals is based on photodiodes and the lock-in technique, and the resolutions obtained for the topography and the near-field signal are around 80 and 150 nm, respectively.© 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Depth profiling measurements of photoluminescence on GaN epitaxial films grown on c-plane sapphire with metalorganic chemical vapor deposition have been performed. Dry etching technique of reactive ion etching is used with reactive gas of CCl2F2/H2/Ar under an operation power of 200 W. Before and after each etching, reflectivity and photoluminescence spectra are measured. Film thickness is determined from both the scanning electron microscopy and the interference oscillations of the reflectivity spectra. An excellent steady etching rate of 19.2 nm/min is established. The photoluminescence measurements show that both the near-band-edge and the yellow luminescence remain fairly constant until the film thickness of about 700 nm, and a large drop is obtained in the ratio of near-band-edge to yellow emission intensity under about 300 nm. Analysis shows that the yellow luminescence emitters are mostly confined within the near interface region, and supports the origin of yellow luminescence to be due to native defects instead of impurities. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Since 1987, farmers in southern Taiwan have reported significant disease-related mortalities in freshwater prawns. Most mortalities have occurred during the winter, and usually almost all the adult prawns die within 4–5 days after clinical signs appear. Histopathological studies show that cells in hepatopancreatic ducts and tubules are vacuolized and degenerated. Large numbers of membrane-bound yeast aggregates are observed in the affected tissues. Two hundred and seventeen yeast isolates were obtained from diseased prawns, pond water and sediments from six areas. DNA restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) was used to analyse the yeast genomes and to categorize them into five groups. Conventional biochemical and metabolic methods were then used to identify the yeasts of each group. The results showed that two strains of Candida sake (I and II), Pichia anomala, Endomyces fibuliger and Candida famata were present. In addition, the RAPD (random amplified polymorphic DNA) method was used to determine their genomic similarities. Two strains (I and II) of C. sake were the most similar (72%). C. sake I appears to be the primary causative agent of disease, based on frequencies of occurrence of the yeasts found in the diseased prawns.

Notes: Abstract Macrolattice structure in the ordered phase of a poly(styrene-b-butadiene-b-styrene) (SBS, with the bulk morphology of spherical polystyrene microdomains in the polybutadiene matrix) dissolved in a selective solvent (dodecyl methacrylate, C12MA, or a 75/25 w/w mixture of C12MA and butylene diacrylate, BDA) which mixes preferentially with the polybutadiene matrix was examined by means of transmission electron microscopy. The use of C12MA/BDA mixture as the selective solvent provided the opportunity of freezing the macrolattice structure upon UV-initiated polymerization of the acrylic monomers when the SBS content is above ca. 60 wt%. Results indicated clearly a body-centered cubic structure, in contrast to the simple cubic packing previously proposed.

Notes: Abstract  We have studied the effects of recombinant human thrombopoietin (TPO, mpl ligand) on the megakaryocyte colony formation from control human bone marrow cells, human leukemia cells at diagnosis, and human bone marrow cells after induction chemotherapy for acute leukemias. In the control human bone marrow cells from four adults and nine children who had localized malignancy and histologically normal-looking marrow, TPO alone effectively stimulated megakaryocyte colony formation, and interleukin-3 (IL-3) synergized this. In 17 patients (13 adults and four children) with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) at diagnosis, TPO stimulated leukemic colony formation in only one patient with FAB M7 subtype. In 11 children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) at diagnosis, TPO did not enhance leukemic colony formation. After 17 courses of induction chemotherapy, nine for AML and eight for ALL, TPO stimulated megakaryocyte colony formation to a level of 51% of that in the control human bone marrow cells. This may suggest that the administration of TPO to patients with M7 subtype warrants caution, whereas it is probably safe to give TPO at any time to patients with ALL. The administration of TPO to patients with acute leukemias after induction chemotherapy could stimulate megakaryocytopoiesis.

Notes: Abstract We report a symptomatic case of unilateral hypoplasia of the internal carotid artery with an intercavernous anastomosis, a very rare developmental anomaly. The symptoms were caused by occlusion of the proximal middle cerebral artery which possibly related to the haemodynamic stress caused by the anomalous intercavernous anastomosis.

Notes: Abstract. Constrictive pericarditis is rare in children. We report computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in a 3-year-old girl. She had a swollen abdomen that increased in two months. CT and MRI showed a thickened pericardium (5.2 mm) without calcification. Both atria were enlarged and ventricles were relatively small. The engorged inferior vena cava had 2.8× the diameter of the descending aorta at the same level. Symptoms were dramatically improved after pericardiectomy. The histopathological features confirmed chronic pericarditis.

Description / Table of Contents: Résumé.
Notes: Summary. Eighty-eight consecutive patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) were reviewed retrospectively and divided into two groups. Group 1 (64 patients) had both knees replaced simultaneously by one team in a single procedure while Group II (24 patients) had 2 operations staged about 7 days apart. The blood loss, operative time, knee functional score, period of hospitalisation and complications were documented in order to compare the 2 groups. Performing simultaneous bilateral TKA (Group I) did not increase the incidence of operative or post-operative complications. Equally, the functional score and mean intra- and post-operative blood loss were not influenced. The operative time and duration of hospitalisation were significantly shorter in Group I than in Group II. On the basis of the results of this study, it appears that simultaneous bilateral TKA is beneficial.
