Notizen: 1 To investigate anti-inflammatory activity of organic germanium, we measured the effect of germanium-concentrated yeast on arachidonic acid release, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production, histamine release, and intracellular H2O2 or hydroperoxide generation in RBL 2H3 cells, and carrageenan-induced paw oedema in rats. 2 Germanium-concentrated yeast dose-dependently inhibited carrageenan-induced paw oedema, suggesting that germanium-concentrated yeast has anti-inflammatory activity in acute inflammation. 3 Germanium-concentrated yeast significantly inhibited melittin-induced arachidonic acid release and PGE2 production in RBL 2H3 cells. 4 Germanium-concentrated yeast did not affect melittin-induced histamine release and silica-induced intracellular H2O2 or hydroperoxide generation in RBL 2H3 cells. 5 These results suggest that anti-inflammatory activity of germanium-concentrated yeast appears partly to be related to the inhibition of arachidonic acid release and PGE2 production in RBL 2H3 cells.

Notizen: Abstract Near-limit detonations are highly unstable and characterized by very large longitudinal velocity fluctuations that can range from 0.4 to 1.8 times the normal Chapman-Jouguet value. The period of the fluctuations also varies over a wide range from a few to a hundred tube diameters. In an attempt to establish a criterion for detonation limits, the velocity fluctuations of near-limit detonations are studied. A novel microwave Doppler technique based on a single coaxial mode has been developed for this purpose to give an unambiguous quasi-continuous velocity measurement of the detonation wave over the entire length of its travel. The near-limit unstable behavior in the detonable stoichiometric mixtures of hydrocarbons (C2H2, C2H4, C2H6, C3H8) with O2, air or N2O, tested in this work, have been characterized by four distinct modes of unstable behavior. This classification allows a qualitative description of the wide range of velocity fluctuations occurring near the detonation limit, including galloping waves.

Notizen: Abstract The characteristics of the propagation of a detonation in chemically sensitized nitromethane in a dense porous medium are investigated. By introducing liquid NM+15% (by weight) DETA into densely packed beds of solid spherical glass beads 66μm to 2.4 mm in diameter, a highly heterogeneous explosive mixture is obtained. The critical (i.e., failure) charge diameter of this mixture is systematically measured in unconfined charges over a wide range of bead sizes. Velocity measurements are also made for the various charges. It is found that there exists a critical bead size above which the critical diameter decreases with increasing bead size and below which it decreases with decreasing bead size. This result indicates an abrupt change in the mechanism of propagation at the critical bead size. Velocity measurements further support this by emphasizing the different behavior above and below the critical point.

Notizen: Abstract Digital image processing techniques have been applied to the analysis of cellular smoked foil patterns from gaseous detonations. In particular, the two-dimensional autocorrelation function is applied to digital cell pattern images and an orientational correlation parameter is calculated. Taking line profiles along the directions of highest correlation provides an unbiased method of determining the mean cell size in each of the two principal directions. By analyzing the width, amplitude and angular position of the orientational correlation plots, information can be extracted concerning the cellular pattern regularity, the relative angular correlation between two sets of transverse waves in two directions, and the mean shape or elongation of the cells within the pattern. The technique is applied to smoked foils from oxyacetylene mixtures with argon dilutions ranging from 0 to 75% to quantify the increase in regularity with argon dilution. This method provides a simple and useful way of analyzing cellular patterns and constitutes a promising technique for improving smoked foil diagnostics.

Notizen: Abstract The effect of the non-ionic surfactants on the ethanol fermentation was greatly dependent on the surfactant added. While Tween 20 and Tween 80 slightly enhanced ethanol fermentation, Triton X-100 which exhibited the inghest increase in the enzymatic saccharification had a negative effect on the ethanol fermentation. The negative effect of Triton X-100 on ethanol production was the most pronounced when the cellulosic hydrolyzates were used. Tween 80 showed the best performance for the ethanol production from steam exploded wood hydrolyzate.

Notizen: The effects of the substrate bias voltage and the deposition temperature on the electrical characteristics and the 1/f noise of TiNx/n-Si Schottky diodes fabricated by reactive magnetron sputtering are investigated. As the substrate bias voltage varies from −40 to −100 V, the ideality factor of the diodes remain almost unchanged whereas the noise intensity as a function of the current shows a shift parallel by about one order of magnitude. At low current levels, the noise intensity is proportional to the current and is attributed to the mobility and diffusivity fluctuation. At higher current levels, the noise intensity is proportional to the square of the current and is attributed to bulk traps mainly near the interface. Analysis of the noise measurements shows that both the Hooge parameter and the bulk trap density near the interface first are increased and then decreased as the negative substrate bias voltage increases from −40 to −100 V. This is in contrast with the effects of the deposition temperature where we found that the Hooge parameter remains almost constant, while both the ideality factor and the interface states density are decreased as the deposition temperature increases from room temperature to 400 °C. The trap properties of the TiNx/n-Si Schottky diodes are correlated with the stoichiometry of the TiNx films investigated by spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We demonstrate a method of acquiring near-field scanning optical microscopy data that allow for the construction of three different types of images from one data set: topographic, constantgap, and constant-height. This data set includes the topographic features of the surface and the optical response at various heights above the sample surface. Comparisons are made between the images recorded in this format and both conventional, constant-gap mode images, and pseudoconstant-height mode images constructed using a single retraction curve. Zmotion artifacts are identified by analyzing the optical intensity for a given image as a function of the sample topography. Using this procedure it is shown that significant z-motion artifacts exist in the constant-gap images of gold particles immobilized on a glass slide. These artifacts are avoided by constructing constant-height images.
